RPM codes:
3000 - Throttle Position Sensor
7000 - EXUP valve
8000 - Fuel sensor
Sounds like you need to clean your EXUP valve and set it up and also adjust your TPS. What year is your bike?

The R1 has a self diagnosis system, the easy way to fix it is to find out what RPM it is stopping at and tell your Yamaha dealer they will be able to fix it easy.

Remove the EXUP cables and see if the valve turns freely. If not, you'll need to remove, clean and apply a little grease. The cables should not be tight. They should be a little loose or they will bind and cause the 7000 error.

You are correct about the free play but it doesn't really tell you how hard to push on them to get 1.5 mm. I've adjusted mine to 1.5 mm and found they were too tight and had to loosen them to get the error to go away. There's also a procedure in the maint. manual that will help you set up the correct position but that's also a little vague. Basically, you need to adjust the cables so the tabs line up with the 3.5 mm hole. You then need to start the bike, turn it off and then turn the key back on to initialize the motor. Check the tab positions, rinse and repeat if they are not right.
