too much oil will blow your CH gasket
drop some oil before you knacker the bike

full change of oil, fill to top level marker (not more) and ignore the light its a known glitch on early R1's

You might be too late though you might of already blown the gasket. if your oil looks like a mayonaiuse texture then you have

You say you just bought the bike? Was it OK when you bought it, or did the oil light come on from the get go? When you say you added a little, how much exactly was this, and what was the oil level prior to adding more?

Sorry for the grilling, but we need a bit more info. What you have said so far does not sound very good, I'm sure thats not what you want to hear, just being honest.

You know you have a sight glass to check the oil, right? Bike should be upright on a level surface. Oil should be near the top dot.

after i would run the bike for about 5-7 mins when i first got it, the light would appear but no smoke or water from the coolant.. with the bike at upright on flat surface no oil would show in the sight glass but when i would lean it to the side a bit then i would see some. i had to put in 1/4 of a cup of oil at most, thats why i didnt think it would hurt. thankfully the oil doesnt look like mayo. . . so im just gonna let it sit till i get the oil completely changed. also with the sight glass, theres two dots on the right side of it, are those the dots it should be measure by? response are really appreciated thanks.

Top dot is the upper level. You need to be close to this, with the bike upright, for the oil light to stay off.
