NoudR1: With that outside toe pointed out like that, you look like Bayliss! Is that just instinct for you or on purpose? Heel on the peg? Not flaming or anything. Lots of styles out there. I tend to keep my toes on the pegs, but I have little weight on the outside foot, and I suppose if I planned on banging a gear up or down when I came out of that corner it would save some movement...

Your butt and knee going one way and your shoulders the other. It might just be a momentary thing, and I am by no means an expert, but my knee goes down alot easier if I am leaning down and into that turn with my shoulder. Next time you're out there, try looking through the turn with your shoulder dropped in and your head down and over between the side of the screen and where your mirror would be. Bam = knee on the deck!

I went a half day a year ago with NESBA. I didn't have full leathers so I couldn't go for the whole day. One of the teachers took me by myself right after the first lap and said I just looked "comfortabe". We passed everyone. What a blast. I am all ready to go this year except for the the boots. I hope to get some soon. Only place to go aroud here is Putnam Park. It seems like a great track to me, but what do I know. It beats the twistys down south anytime though. They said the same people who did the Indy speedway surface did their track. Suposed to be great traction! Hope to post pics after theis summer. :rock

I think on the straight in 3rd gear i hit 130 or 140? But that is only for 1 or 2 seconds before I am braking really hard for turn one. I have yet to totally figure that track out. SO many variables, elevation changes etc.... I plan on being there march 9th, despite the cold. I am working on braking a little later. Survival reactions tend to get me braking a little too soon. Just gotta overcome them. Nice pics guys :thumbup

Used to have a F4 trackbike but the R1 is now doing double duty. Turn in takes more effort on the R1 but its probably due to the M1s that are on there.

I was surprised at how resistant to turning it was as compared to my ancient dinosuar '87 FZR 1000, which is insanely flickable despite a huge weight and suspension disadvantage. I was able to improve the R1s turning effort by raising the rear 15mm, raising the forks 8-11mm in the clamps (depending on tires), and mounting 180/55 or 190/55 rear tires. The bike does require a steering damper set up like this though, since I retained the '00 35mm offset. An '02 triple tree might mitigate this by virtue of the smaller 25mm offset, though....

Wow, 8-11 mms. thats a big difference. Ive never heard of anything over 6mms as far as recommendations. As far as rear ride height is concerned, is gonna be a while before i can get a new shock. I currently have a Sprint steering damper on it which mounts the same as Hyperpros. Boy does that R1 need it. Gonna spoon on a pair of SC1 120/70 and SC2 180/55 when these M1s are shot.

BUt may I suggest that after they are toast following a few track days, you try the 190/55. Turns in like the 180. but drives out of turns much harder, like a 190/50.

It all depends on the organizer, but typically it ranges from $250-300. Something to keep in mind is the sound meter police are 'STRICKED'! Recently a guy from Ca was there twice in the past month with a completely stock new ZX6r and was nailed on both occasions for exceeding the 92 decible limit. :( BD

I had the lean angle down, I just had to stick it out there and change my body positioning a little. Its almost touching in this picture but this was before my self evaluation. This is actually a picture of a picture so its a little grainy.

It's easy to be misunderstood, or to misunderstand, the nature of a posted comment, based only on its written content, devoid of inflection and other subtleties present in the spoken word, and to infer meaning or intent that was not there. RE one day track schools in your area in the $300 range, the only one I know of that somewhat meets the criteria, is Keith Code's California Superbike School, which does conduct schools at VIR, and if you use your gear and your bike, costs $395. IMO, for the first time to ride a track, the additional $200 it takes to rent one of their track-prepped ZX6Rs is money well spent (though you do have to cover their insurance deductable of like $750 or something like like that in case you wad the bike. Still, I'd rather wad one of theirs and pay the $ than wad one of mine if it were my first track experience.

Thanks, and you're welcome. The class I was talking about is a one day class, two day camps do cost quite a bit more. The instruction is based on a total of 4 levels. All students taking the class must start on Level I, which in my opinion, is the ideal starting point for a rider with considerable street experience, but little to no track experience. The day of instruction is broken down into an alternating series of class room sessions where a particular skill is emphasized and explored didactically, and on-track sessions where the particular skill is practiced and exercised. There is a good ratio of on-track instuctors per student, each instructor assigned a small number of students. Following each on-track session, but prior to the next class room session, there is an informal "debriefing" by the instructor to discuss your riding performance relative to how well you were riding and performing the skill for that track session. The school is very well run and organized, Keith has an uncanny ability to take a complex task like how to ride a motorcycle on a race track, and break it down into component parts that can be conveyed and developed.

Good day at Pahrump yesterday...

I had to go home early because I wore out my knee pucks. Brand new at the beginning of the day. Spidi Teardrops. about 3/4 inch thick, bright and shiny at 9am when the track went green. THis is what they looked like at 2:30. aout 170 miles of track later...

Easy on the sliders there fella ;) you could just skim them instead of pushing down hard and they would last. BD

Yeah, that's a skill I've yet to learn...I tend to touch down then push down a bit as the lean angle increases (like when exiting turn 2 at pahrump and heading up the hill to 3). Using the knee as a feeler guage is a bit tricky when I don't yet know when I'm gonna lose the front (probably not even close yet)...Don't really want to know, but I would like to know how close to the limit I am BEFORE I go over it. Fun stuff though!

I'm sure over time you'll get it dialed to where your comfortable. BD

But on the 2003 R6 with the projection like headlights, it will melt the headlight lense if you leave it on with the headlights on. I guess the new headlights on the R6 heatup quite a bit more. I use it on the 2002 R1 with the lights on or off. On the R6 I just run it on the track. I dont ride on the street any longer so both bikes are only on the track. I just pull the fuse on both and have never put it back. -J

This is a pic of me at Val de Vienne in France, just south of Poitiers. Fanbloodytastic circuit. Really twisty and technical, not as easy as the cicuit diagram would have you believe, but check it out anyway at www.circuit-valdevienne.com The Frenchies reckon if you can go fast here, you can go fast anywhere. Err I can't go that fast there ! July 17 and 18 I will be tear arsing around Magny-Cours the Formula 1 circuit. Bring it on. Be careful boys and girls.:thumbup

This thread is a stunner! I just had to post me track day pic.... This is me at Kyalami South Africa, last corner before the finish line straight. 2nd track day on the R1, 4th track day in total about. Love 'em to bits. Little bit of an expensive exercise here though.

Here's my latest from Willow Springs Big Track on 8/30/03. This a very fast track. My top speed via GPS was 149 mph. I rode in the B group. My first time moving up. I had a best time of 1.39 (slow but improving). This pic is turn 4 right before I touched down. My 6th trackday... The pucks are broken in now.:rock
