arls1 03-28-2002, 11:06 AM New guy on the scene here! Looking to get an R1 shortly and was hoping some of you R1 owners could help me out.
Has anyone modified their R1's to be reverse shift pattern? I put this in the racing section thinking some of you racer would have done this. If you have done this to your R1 can you let me know how you did it. Thanks in advance.
Olddog 03-28-2002, 07:16 PM About %70 of the guys that were racing them changed to race pattern. On the earlier models it's one simple $50 linkage rod that you change, not sure about the newer models. I thought about changing mine, but then my buddies would have had to " think " about what gear they were in if we swapped bikes.
Race pattern is only preference anyways ( yeah, it DOES kinda' make sense to bang down for an upshift;) , but several of our faster national caliber racers here, Dugan and Cook for 2 , use street pattern. On certain tracks in tight corners where you might want to bang an upshift ( gently;) ), it would be nice, but for every arguement FOR race pattern, there are equal situations where street pattern would be superior. I've rode and raced with both, and have no strong conclussion either way, unless no one else rides your bike. good luck:p
Twisted Logic 03-28-2002, 07:39 PM For the early models you can get a shift rod from Sharkskinz for 20.00,I did it for a long time and it does feel nicer on the track(to me) and makes shifting in a wheelie real easy

Who's selling Attack rearsets for $200USD? Have a link? That's a pretty decent price.

KRAZY 4MY R1 03-31-2002, 11:01 AM :yesnod i did it on my fzr 1000 ,and 88 hurricane i use to have...my fzr was stretched 4" and built 1040 motor on it and i drag raced it for 3 yearsand rode it on the street and i loved it w/reversed pattern..but when i put my airshifter on it ...it did not matter anymore;) ...when you first do it ..though...u really have to think before you shift because you have to get into the mindframe that it is reversed...never really thought about doing it to my srad or my new R1....well anyway GOOD LUCK!!:hellobye

How did you find the shifting action to be after you flipped the pattern, was any better or worse? I've heard the R1 trannies are kind of notchy to begin with and was hoping the flipping the shift linkage over and using that funky crooked bar doesn't make it worse.
smold 04-01-2002, 05:50 PM seem to remember my F1SE was reverse pattern seemed fast at the time ;)
I have the Attack Reverse Shifter kit, it works damn nice too, especially in conjuction with my Electric Shifter.
Here's my logic on why I like the reverse shifter.
Its much easier to use your calf muscle for a quick movement down, than what little muscle you have at the front of your shin and ankle to pull the shifter up.

I used the Sharkskinz reverse shifting rod (20.00) and it took awhile to get it adjusted,after I got it right it shifted just like normal.

it is very simple.
just order a shift arm from yamaha for a 1999 R1
and turn it upside down.
it cost 25$

Olddog 07-25-2002, 07:30 AM I scored a set of like new Graves rearsets for $150:jump , and threw them on when I put everything back together from my track get off. I decided to use race pattern, for no particular reason, just something different. What I DO notice on my 99' is a much smoother gear engagement when shifting:fact . The linkage rod now is outboard of the frame, instead of going thru it like the stocker, and I'm speculating that there's a more ideal angle that the new rod is levered from that is responsible for the new smoothness. After about 60 miles or so it's same same for either pattern IMO. It feels somewhat more rational and natural to keep bangin' down to go forward, but I know far too many really fast racers who still prefer street pattern to say it's an absolute advantage one way or the other. I mainly did it so when Jonah occassionaly borrows my bike he doesn't have to think, since EVERYTHING he rides is race pattern.
olddog: is 150 the retail price for a graves rearset? then i would definately buy it (must fit 2002 r1).
i contacted gilles tooling but their rearset was 400 euros + shipping :eek: no way am i going to spend that amount of money just to change the shift pattern...
edit: o, now i see "like new" so i'm guessing it wasn't retail :D
Olddog 07-26-2002, 07:26 AM No, these were over 5 bills new, so THAT was a big incentive;) Actually, there was a guy at the track parting out a 99' that he'd raced, wadded, and bent the frame. I never saw the rearsets even though I looked at his stuff a couple of times ( he had them in a cardboard box shoved in the front of his PU bed. Towards the end of the day one of the mechanics on my kids FORMER race team;) asked why don't you lowball that guy on the Grave rearsets? " What rearsets ? " was the answer. We went back, I saw them. He wanted $300 ( a fair price ) I offered him $150......... he said he couldn't do that, he'd been offered $ 200 earlier in the day. ( the races were done now and everyone was packing up), I said OK, started to walk away, and he called me back;) Moral? It never hurts to make a ridiculous offer. They are nice bits, but I'd probably never have popped retail for a set. Good luck.
Suicycle 08-04-2002, 10:13 PM i have had a billet part on order from lockhart phillips for about two months now. a little over 2 bills and it reverses the shift pattern, while using stock shift rod. a lot cheaper than rearsets that allow you to reverse shift, and how much more comfortable would moving thje pegs up and back be??
Olddog 08-05-2002, 07:35 AM Yeah, I was concerned at first about the comfort level, but I'm 5'9" and I actually think it's MORE comfortable back and up a little. My buddy Dr. Dave also has a 99', he's 6' 3" and found the rearsets to actually take some strain off his back and neck compared to the stock footpeg location. He was surprised, and so was I actually. Through all the years I've had bikes though, I've got to tell you that never once has COMFORT been anything I've ever factored into a dececion on a bike. Some of my Italian stuff was pretty brutal too, .......... but I didn't care, so take this with a grain of salt;)
