1) Remeove the lower plastics 2) Put the bike on a front and rear stand (you want the bike level) 3) Turn the bike on and let it warm up for about 5-7 minutes (gets the oil nice and hot) 4) Place a container under the oil pan bolt, then unscrew the bolt. 5) Let all of the oil drain out, then remove the filter 6) Install new filter and put the oil pan bolt back in 7) Fill her up with the appropriate amount of oil... You're done :hellobye

Don't forget to rub oil on the filter gasket to get a nice seal and torque the drain bolt correctly. Oil filter too (or hand tight if you want.) After filling to level between the two lines, start her up, check for leaks and after a few minutes shut her down and recheck level, add oil if necessary :beer

2 things.. 1: i've always found i can't get to the 02 oil filter without removing the left (clutchside) midfairing 2: burning hot oil will scald you, be careful.. i usually just let the bike get a bit warm (so the oil is less voscous, but won't burn the hell out of me). the stock 02 R1 takes around 3.0 US quarts, btw, and you want to check the oil peep window when the bike is level (i.e. on a stand, etc).

i recommend wiping the oil from the headers before turning the bike on inside the garage, the smoke will fill hte garge up nice and fast, cheech and chong style

When changing my oil I don't put it on the stand until after I drain all the oil. IE the bolt is on the left side of the engine not straight on the bottom. Also I always lean the bike on the kickstand then pull it onto the kickstand(like I'm doing the kickstand spin). This gets a good 1/4 to 1/2 quart more of old oil out. When I change my oil it takes a fitler and 4 full quarts.:fact

I have a dumb question ... is there a special cover that goes over the filter that requires a special tool to remove it? The r1 is new to me, I went and bought a filter, it looks like a normal filter, not the kind that are submersed in oil ... but when I look where it seems like te filter should be, there's a metal thang with a HUGE nut on the front (not the fuzzy kind, thanks) ... eeeeewhat??? dude you don't need much for an oil change.. I just start it for about 2 minutes... then shut it off.. take the bottom fairings off... (U do not need to take the mids off). place the used oil container under the bike (while on the kickstand) It'll fit trust me. unscrew the oil nut, let it drain for 5 minutes.. move the bike a bit so the rest of the oil can bleed. when done, place the nut back in. grab one of those filter removers you use on your car.. and take the filter off.. simple... if the filter grabber doesn't fit.. shove some paper or forded terry cloth between it and the filter.. and trust me it'll work. then put a film of new oil on the new filter.. and install. finally, replace botom fairings.. and viola!! you're done!!

It's behind the header pipes. Go to the other side of the bike from where u took your photo. :beer

1. don't let the bike get too hot, the oil will burn the shit out of you, and the headers heat up VERY fast so be careful there as well. 2. when draining, lean the bike over to the kickstand side, or place on rear stand only to allow as much dirty oil out as possible. 3. before putting the new filter on, swab some new oil on the gasket to help seat it and seal it properly. I ALWAYS put about 1/3 quart of oil inside the filter BEFORE i screw it on to help get some oil into the engine. 4. mine always takes 3.5 quarts to start and i might add a little more a couple weeks later.

if you put too much oil in, what is the best way to drain?

For all you DIY's out there, this little gadget (QuickChanger Oil Drain System) is worth its weight in gold for oil changes:rock Link: http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/?cat=maint Take my word, better yet take MartinC's, it makes changing the oil a breeze :thumbup

ok.. A couple of you have stated your opinions on how much oil to use..now lets here some more... Including the oil filter.. How many quarts do you use? 4 US Qts? 3 US Qts? 3.5 US Qts? How many should you buy from the shop? Be specific... For those of us who do not have a manual, figured it would help out...

Buy 4 qts., with a filter you'll need approximately 3.6 - 3.7 qts. :thumbup

Originally posted by R1DER SORRY, couldn't resist it... see 3.5) Come on now people you only have to remove the lower let fairing 4 bolts i think and slide it from the hooks in the middle behind the shock and in the front behind the air scoop.... NO NEED to remove both side lowers..... You are :owwn3d :fork

That quick changer can't be tightened well unless you modify a socket. No 22mm will work once it's on the bike...and that includes a thin-walled deep socket. It's basically a poor design which doesn't fit the lack of clearance on the R1.

Just a thought in making sure that the oil is mostly fresh in the bike. After you have drained the oil putting in a quart of oil so that it "flushes" out more old oil? Just my $0.02
