How much can sliders really help?

I always wanted to add them when I had my bike, but it was always in hindsight after dropping the bike...can the sliders protect the bike from a tip over?

They can help, and they can hurt. More often, they help. But when they hurt, it's bad damage, such as broken engine case or frame.

I think they can help, but some people expect them to do more than they are designed for. A frame slider's purpose is to keep your frame off of the track when you lowside or drop your bike. The slider will wear away instead of your frame rail. They are not fairing savers. They aren't intended to save your fairing from damage. They might save it a bit in a low speed tip over - good for you if they do - but that's not their purpose. If your bike goes off road, they can dig into the dirt and cause your bike to flip. Finally, longer isn't better. I've had giuys that wanted 5 or 6" long sliders. Big mistake. Longer sliders will snap off easier as they allow more leverage to be applied to the end. Stay short as you can - about 2.5" on a R1 is good. Just my 2 cents! Eric

Earache pretty much nailed it. But, I'd like to add that I've unfortunately had more than my share of crashes and the sliders have always helped to one extent or another. My bike is loaded with them. Intuitive Bar-end, frame and swingarm sliders, and clutch protector. On my track bike, (another '02 R1) I even modded out a clutch protector to fit on the left side of my swingarm pivot. To me it's money well spent.
