Just posting this up to be very clear of whats going on. Here is the mesh that's going to be used

http://www.twpinc.com/static-images/meshphotos/006X0350AMESH.jpg

It's aluminum mesh and there will be an aluminum edge as well. The radiator guards that Cox makes uses aluminum as well and the wire thickness/open area is spot on. The one I made for myself has only 2 points securing it, which works just fine, but I'd like to try 3 for you guys. It won't want to "wiggle" almost at all. The 3rd anchor is going to be a bit tricky as I'll have to twist the material 90* but it should create a better quality guard.

If there is something specific you'd like me to try to yours individually just let me know and do whatever you'd like.

Did mine today, $26.00 in materials

Picked up a piece of stainless screen from lowes (local hardware) and cut it with metal shears. It fit inside the slits of the radiator, I ran some metal ties in the top and bottom for extra support and holding. Good fit, took 30 mins.

If it works, it works. But I (personally) would be incredibly leery using that. I've seen that stuff in the store. While I do agree it does have more open space than it appears in the 1st pic, the open area is maybe 50% or less :/ Just keep your eye on the temps when it starts to get warmer and when you take it on a more "spirited" ride :lol

Fit looks great though :yesnod :thumbup

Thanks, yea I'm always watching my temps anyways, and if it does seem to hot, it will take less than 5mins to remove. I don't plan on using it during track days because the track Tarmac is way better than the roads aroun here, this is easily removable for some commuting to car meets and nice rides, until I feel like ponying up money for a bolt in.

Thanks for the comments. I'm taking it on a longer ride tomorrow to really test it, but it doesnt seem to get hot as is.

I think you are good for the winter...I'd watch it again in the late spring and summer when it gets into the 80s and 90s...hopefully it does alright, but that's when I'd be concerned..the other thing to look at is if it isn't hard to take on and off run it and check temps then remove it and run it in the same temp and see if the bike is running any cooler.

Gearheaded
01-02-2012, 08:04 PM
That's my plan, I don't even have to remove plastics to get it on and off, but I'm not too worried about it. If I doesnt stay at my liking, I'm less than 20 minutes away from a metal manufacturing company, and I was quoted like 15$ for more material that is a little more open. I think it will be ok tho

For those of you that are interested in saving money on shipping and are willing to wait a bit, I will be going to the Jennings track day in April. I can bring them along and either give it to you then or I can give it to a squadron member that is close to you. Just a thought. If not, it looks like shipping will be about $15 through USPS flat rate. If anybody can find it cheaper I would be more than happy to do it that way. The box would have to be approx 13x18x3 and I'll be shipping them from zip 53185

Dumb question, those bolt holes are water tight right? As in you can take them out with out loosing coolant.:dundun:

And you can add a tab on the bottom as well but will have to twist the material 90*. There might be one on top as well but I believe it would be easier to work with the one on the bottom

Serious note fellas: I made pretty good progress with the guards. However...I hope you guys like these because I never plan on using this material again :no The screen is made up of individual wires that are woven together. It all moves independently and starts to unravel itself at the ends. Once it's put together it's tough stuff :fact But if there's a next time, it'll be with the material I used on mine :yesnod I had to cut the evening short because I actually broke the jaws on the vice :( looks like this will prolly end up costing me money :lol It's cool though , I figured something like this would come up before I even got into this for you guys. no hard feelings man. im sure dealing with strands of that shit is a huge annoyance. my radiator has been safe for the last 2 years of riding on the street. im sure its not going to get demolished anytime soon...and if it does ill be sure it causes a lowside totalling the bike out...then ill put a finished guard from you on a 2012 model :lol

I don NOT think that you guys will be dissapointed with greens production. I think that it is/was acceptable. I mounted mine after I got home from the track day. I will take a pic of it a little later today when I get a break from work.
I will mention that I think the product selection could have been slighly better, (no fault of green's) but the final product was great for what product he had to work with. I think the only thing I would like to have seen changed would be another bracket on the bottom to attach it with. (noticed that AFTER installation and, green DID mention that to me when he have me the gaurd ), green also mentioned it earlier that he wasn't satisfied with the material selection.
I did modify it just a bit by painting mine before installation, and also put velcro on the back side and on the front side if the radiator so that it didn't rattle/vibrate.

Overall. Great product produced by a fellow forum member.

Now that you guys have it all figured out, I'll show you what I did for my GSX-R1000. I started with stiff paper so that I could draw on it and cut a pattern with a scissors (sorry, no pic). Then I used it to cut a prototype out of 1/8" galvanized screen from the hardware store.
http://i44.tinypic.com/s2ungy.jpg
The galvanized screen is cheap and weak enough that it can also be cut with scissors. The shape is such that it fills the full gap inside the fairing, which supports it so no other support is required. One screen protects the radiator and the oil cooler.

Once the prototype was trimmed to the final dimensions, I used it to cut the final version from 8x8x.025 stainless screen (McMaster 9238T22). Aluminum seemed too flimsy for my tastes. Woven wire can unravel at the edges over time so I went around the edges with silver solder to prevent that. Here's the installed final product.

Thanks man :thumbup I've still gotta figure out how to make the bottom bracket since it's gonna be a pain to twist at a 90*. So I can't figure out an efficient way of twisting the aluminum at a 90* angle for the bottom bracket and not have it look like garbage :shake Originally all you guys were fine with just having the 2 brackets on the side when you saw mine and I mentioned I would like to add the 3rd afterwards. Is everyone ok with just using the the 2 brackets? I went ahead and bought some weather striping that I can either apply myself or just ship it along with the guards. That should alleviate any tendency to wobble or pivot. I'm not gonna charge any more for it or anything...I've already taken forever on these things :shake I think I can take a small hit and just give you weather striping :fact

Thoughts?

i'm okay with weather striping for now,.. my buddy is a machinist, maybe we can
figure out something to get it all mounted securely once I get the bike on the road...

though going from the post above, sounds like its not that big a deal anyway...

No. It was commuting doing 30. Checked my blind spot and when I looked back forward the dude in front had stopped. I grabbed a bit to much front brake and by the time I realized it was coming up and let go. The back had to much momentum and over it came. Good thing I have another tank and fairings. Just need a subframe, headlights and a fairing stay now.

I gotta admit at first I thought one of the tabs was mounted in the wrong spot...at the bottom instead of at the top. It just wasnt lining up. then I realized removing the ECU uncovered another bolt behind it that is used. Mounted up fine.
