: Carbonar1's Hybrid Hand-Me-Downs 01
CARBONAR1 09-27-2011, 07:35 PM I bought this 01 as a commuter/wifey/track/rain bike, in early 08. I knew it had a dodgy 2nd gear, but it was too cheap to pass up, and I'm a sucker for a pretty blue face!
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/250409003.jpg
I gave it a thorough service and refresh and put it to work, and it was fine until Christmas 09. Then one day on my commute home from work, I was trundling along in 5th when a woman in a Beemer came flying out of a carpark in front of me. I hit the brakes and she drove off oblivious to the world around her. It was 40 C (105 F), it was 2 days before Christmas, I had been working my arse off and I was fairly vague....
I went to take off from my emergency stop in 5th! The bike jumped out of gear and went bang crunch rattle rattle. I tried going up and down the box and was able to select gears. I was 3 minutes from home, hot tired and now fvcking exasperated....so I rode home.
I shouldn't have.
I knew I'd damaged the gearbox, but I didn't know how bad it was. I put it down the shed, pulled my sad old Fail Bladder out and put it back into active duty.
A long while later, I stripped the bike down, pulled the motor out and dismantled it from the bottom up. The damage was extensive. 2nd gear (which meshes with 5th) had lost one side of all it's teeth. All those teeth had gone through the gearbox, jamming themselves between other gears. The only gear that was undamaged was 1st.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0037-1.jpg
I got all the gears and bearings, selector forks, a water pump, a stator and clutch plates (also stuffed), and all the assorted gaskets and do dads, new from MR Cycles. And with the help of a mechanic, rebuilt the whole lot.
While it was motorless, I started offering up bits of 06 R1 that were cast offs from my endurance styled build. I knew from the forum experts, that the 06 triple clamps fit into the 01. This meant that every thing else from the 06 front end I had lying around, could also go on.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06028.jpg
The forks, faded Graves bars & damper clamp, clutch perch, faded CRG levers, master cylinder, tygon hose & reservoir. I had to shorten the posts on the underside of the top yoke, so that the steering lock lined up when the ignition barrel was fitted.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06029.jpg
The front mudguard that I had cracked with a disc lock (It took me 20 years of riding before I did that!). The front wheel and rotors, brake calipers and Goodrige hoses. I bought a pair of axles and nuts from a wrecker for $50.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06031.jpg
This was the easy bit, everything fit no problems. :)
CARBONAR1 09-27-2011, 08:10 PM Round at the back things got a bit confusing...
The 01 has a 245mm brake rotor. The 06 has a 220mm one. The calipers are very different and couldn't be swapped on the hangers. And neither of the hangers were giving me the correct wheel spacing.
So I asked the forum Gods for a miracle...and was told to try a 2002 caliper and hanger. I got one for....you guessed it...$50 from a wrecker.
I used an 06 left side wheel spacer, an 06 wheel, rotor and sprocket, an 01 right side spacer, and an 02 caliper and hanger, in the 01 swingarm.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01-060011.jpg
Now you see why I was confused!
I offered up the faded purpling Graves rearsets that I'd taken off the 06.
The right side fit perfectly, using the 01 master cylinder, the 06 reservoir and hose.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06041.jpg
The left side fit perfectly too, but it wasn't until I got the motor back in, that I could see whether I had enough clearance for the shift rod...
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06043.jpg
I tried the 06 shock absorber for size. It's the same dimensions exactly...except for the position of the reservoir.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06033.jpg
Which hits the boxed section of the swingarm, reducing the travel by half....
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06036.jpg
So it was out with the new, and in with the old...for now.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01to06064.jpg
The motor was finished, I put it back in and discovered that the shift rod hit the upper edge of the hole through the frame. So I got my trusty Dremel out and enlarged the upper edge by 10mm.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0004-1.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0003-1.jpg
The oem muffler was off an earlier model and didn't fit properly, that, and it was fugly and heavy! So I got a $200 Delkevic shorty and link pipe, and a Harris bracket which was a bit more expensive...at $60!
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0014.jpg
CARBONAR1 09-27-2011, 08:25 PM Mechanically, everything was sorted. It ran and rode beautifully. The turn in was quicker, but the front was more planted. Under hard acceleration the bars waved more than before, but 2nd gear was working like it never had, so that was testing the stability. I have yet to do something with the shock, but it's next on my list.
Next up were the cosmetics...
The 01 was in fairly good shape, but little things like 06 indicators and mirrors helped freshen it up a bit. I got a Zero Grav screen as well.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0017.jpg
I took an alloy ring from around an old door lock, painted it black and siliconed it to the top yoke...
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0006-1.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0007-1.jpg
Redgecko saved the day with an OEM bracket for the brake reservoir. Cheers man.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/01-06004.jpg
I fitted a manual fan switch to one of the fairing inner panels.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0010.jpg
And wrapped all the black plastic bits in DiNoc vinyl.

CARBONAR1 09-27-2011, 08:55 PM So the fantastic thing about having two R1's, is that as you upgrade one, you have no choice but to upgrade the other....
The OEM 06 fasteners and backing plates went on....

Mike
CARBONAR1 09-27-2011, 10:31 PM They're a magic bike. I can't give you an honest comparison because of the mods, but they're a much smoother and easier ride, with a belting top end. I wouldn't get rid of the old girl though....it takes much more thought and effort to go anywhere near as fast, which I love. :)
desire68 09-27-2011, 10:39 PM Did you mean the 01 when you said that you "Would get rid of the old girl?"

Cheers mate. I made that myself too, frame and all ! All up it cost me $1600. :thumbup
desire68 09-27-2011, 10:59 PM I thought that's what you meant. There are so many things i love about the 01 but i really want a newer R1 as the modifications are very limited on the 01 now that its an "older" bike. Things like ohlins suspension and decent exhaust systems are like hens teeth(super rare)

Very nice man, I think we all need two bikes just for this reason lol.
Thanks man, it's a win-win situation. :flex:
How's yours going, did you go for Roo's tank?
thnakdone 10-04-2011, 05:27 AM Beautiful bike and build! Got a question, do you have any good pics of the damper mounting (mainly at the frame snout/fairing stay)? I just swapped in an 06 front on my 99 and was wondering how to use the damper that came with it (after rebuilding the damper).
I will be posting my build here in th e98-99 section as well... thanks for the rear wheel spacer info as well... just waiting for the caliper and bracket to come in I got off of ebay the other day so I can swap in the 06 wheel.
CARBONAR1 10-04-2011, 05:36 PM Thanks thnakdone.
I'm not sure if the 06 damper will have enough length to work mounted this way. My damper has 250mm of sweep from lock to lock. The rod is 280mm in length, there is 15mm of extra length on either side. Unfortunately I gave my 06 damper to a mate, so I can't try it out for you.
The previous owner fitted this damper...badly. There was no spacer under the clamp on the fairing stay. Just a long bolt with two locknuts and enough exposed thread to let the clamp move around with the damper. The bars moved about 50mm before the damper actually did anything. And the whole setup rattled like a badly loose headstem!
When I fitted the 06 front end I had to do a fair bit of tweaking to make it work properly.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0001-5.jpg
I made spacers to support the eyelets properly and let them move freely.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0004-11.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0003-14.jpg
The ignition barrel was hitting the clamp at 2/3 lock, so I ground the posts on the underside of the yoke that the barrel is mounted to. I took probably 20 mm off it, to raise the barrel until the lock pin was at the top of the hole in the frame.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0006-6.jpg
That still wasn't enough, so I had to reshape the clamp until it cleared. I ground it from a 45 degree straight edge, to a concave curve.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0005-15.jpg
And I put some adhesive backed foam on the top of the fairing stay, and the underside of the clamp, just in case.
Good luck with it man. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-04-2011, 06:36 PM Thanks for the pics. It helps me out alot. Right now I have the solenoid for my devil eyes on that part of the fairing stay. I needed to move it anyway so it is out of the way... as well as the control switch...LOL I went for a spin around the block this evening and it was WAY more fun than the old front end! When I move the parts and mock up the dampener I will post pics of it as well as the rest of the build.
Anyone know where to find the carbon fiber frame covers for the 1st gens? I remember seeing them before but not sure where.
CARBONAR1 10-04-2011, 06:49 PM Good stuff. :thumbup
As for frame covers...it depends on the quality you're after.

thnakdone 10-07-2011, 07:10 AM I think I had seen some on ebay before... right now Im not looking to spend what they want for them, I have other projects as well... LOL
So last night I went to work on the dampener. I did notice that the steering stops on the 06 seem to be about 8-10 mm farther apart than the 99... I measured it all up and mocked the dampener in place before I made any holes in the fairing stay. I did also have to grind off about 4mm off of the lugs for the ignition as well due to clearance for the dampener (now I can also use the lock as well...LOL) The stock dampener is mountedon the left fork tube which did pose a slight problem with the choke line. It is a close/tight fit but it it working. I will post the build as well as pics later on today. I can't do it on my work computer.....
I may be swapping in the 06 rear wheel as well this weekend, plus finishing up the little things left to do on my wife's bike so she can get used to it and ride/learn to ride it.
CARBONAR1 10-07-2011, 02:32 PM Brilliant work dude. You're making rapid progress by the sound of it. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 06:52 PM great progress occurs when the wife is away from the house... otherwise not so much unless I piss her off by being in the garage.... :lol
CARBONAR1 10-07-2011, 08:56 PM Amen to that brother! :lol
thnakdone 10-13-2011, 09:19 PM Ben.... got a question... how much spacedo you have between the rear rotor and the caliper bracket on each side? I just mounted mine and the outer side has 0.533mm gap and the other has a little over 1.5mm.... Just wondering if this was the same with yours. I know the caliper itself floatsin the hanger, just wondering if heat expansion would close that gap too much. I could always check and make sure the rotor isn't warped, but I spun the wheel and there wasnt any signs or it being warped.... I could also take the bracket down and have 0.25-0.5mm machined off just for my own security.
CARBONAR1 10-13-2011, 11:16 PM I've got about 2mm each side. Any heat expansion is only likely to be 100ths of a mm, nothing to worry about. That being said, if you have both 01 and 06 wheel spacers, just juggle them around a bit to make sure you have the correct wheel position, chain alignment, and caliper position. My memory isn't brilliant, I may of got the sides confused. I know for sure I used one of each year. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-14-2011, 05:55 AM well when I got the wheel I didnt get the hub and cush drive so I used the one off of my 99. After I posted that I was thinking about the caliper (righthand)side spacer from the 99 since I have the 06 in that place right now. I did see when I put it all together a couple mm gap on the RH side, which a small gap before tightening the bolt is normal, but it may have been more than desired. I decided all of the sudden last night to swap it out and try it. I did it around 1130 PM so I just basically threw it on there since I was wondering if the hub and cush would work before I went and bought one off of ebay. I do think I remember you saying you used the 06 spacers except for the 01 RH spacer so I will try that one today and see how it is. I need to make sure I swap out the clutch cover on the wife's bike first though or else I will be in a world of hurt working on mine when the parts for hers is in...LOL
thnakdone 10-15-2011, 10:10 PM found out that the cush drive rom the 99 and the 99 sprocket side spacer is the problem.... I have an 06 hub/cush/ spacer on it's way now.... I rode it today with no issues, but I want it dead bang for longer rides and well... just for the OCD that I have as it is... I know it isn't centered so it isnt going to stay that way long term...LOL thanks again for all the help....
CARBONAR1 10-16-2011, 12:25 AM Good stuff man, I'm glad your getting it figured out. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-16-2011, 08:42 AM if I didn't have OCD about certain things I would leave it as is becasue it works well and is fun to ride right now..... On the initial test spin around the block I reallised that the dampener needed adjustment as I couldn't turn the handles to the left as far as should be... that is sorted out as well. I will get some better pics today, the ones I took yesterday had too much shade. A black bike with alot of shade looks like crap in pics.... LOL and to think I was originally going to go back to the original ble that th ebike was when it left the showroom floor... LOL I have a place in my heart for the yamaha Blue R1s
diazarusmc 10-16-2011, 05:10 PM Very entertaining build and read brutha. Both bikes look amazing.

Nah, I'm selling them. The 01 gets left out in the rain all winter, not good conditions for iron rotors. :scared

I dont have a tig to do it myself, but i have a great welder in the family (aviation certified welder) :fact still wondering what all it would take to use the 07-08 exhaust/swing arm on it as well... hell I have been thinking about making a single sided swinger as well... just dont have the time... :no

thnakdone 12-16-2011, 10:33 PM well part of it was just for shytes and giggles... the rest of the frame was gonna be a carbon wrap project at the same time... besides I have an extra motor, as does frank, sitting in the garage... I like frankenstines... LOL
CARBONAR1 12-16-2011, 11:13 PM The old girl got another hand me down yesterday...A forum quick throttle mod.
I fitted a Robby Moto kit to the 06 (thanks Stevo:thumbup), so I had my modified OEM 06 throttle tube and housing left over.
Both parts are identical, and I had removed the throttle stops from inside the 06 housing, so I could bolt it straight onto the 01.
The top housing is the trimmed 06
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0002-16.jpg
The bottom one is the stock 01
The 01 tube on the left, the modified 06 tube on the right.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0004-17.jpg
Of course it wasn't that easy....Unlike the 06, the 01 cables weren't long enough, even with all the adjusters backed right off. I couldn't close the housing over the handlebar, because the plastic cable elbows were too close to the throttle tube.
So I removed the seat, tank, airbox, coil tray, rubber dust sheild, and carbies....to be able to remove the throttle cables. I got some more cable, cut it 15mm longer than the OEM return cable, and swapped them. I soldered two new ends onto the new cable, and reinstalled them into the bike.
Sorry I didn't take any pictures of this bit, I was too anxious to see if I had got it right!
I had to use up 3/4 of the available adjustment, both on the carbs and at the throttle end of the cable, to get full tension. So 8-10mm longer cable would probably have been enough, but it worked.
Here's the before shot, you can just see the two lines on the curve of the tape. Probably about 1/3 turn to WOT.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0019-8.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz104/carbonar1/DSCF0021-4.jpg
And afterward, about 1/5th maybe 1/6th of a turn.
Took it for a test ride and it feels like a new bike, I think getting rid of a bit of the slop in the old set up has helped a lot too. The cable wasn't fully tensioned before.
It cost me about $3 for the original piece of PVC joiner, out of which I've cut three slices, and there's still enough left for two. And the cable and ends cost me $5. So $5.50 to get the same effect as the big dollar Robby Moto jobbie. Good stuff. :) :riding
CARBONAR1 12-16-2011, 11:14 PM well part of it was just for shytes and giggles... the rest of the frame was gonna be a carbon wrap project at the same time... besides I have an extra motor, as does frank, sitting in the garage... I like frankenstines... LOL
An honourable cause Dennis. :bow
ROD FIORE 12-17-2011, 12:15 AM Wow looks great. I have the throttle mod on my 2000 I never thought to do it on my 06. I expect it unleash the hounds of hell on the 06 cause it damn sure did on the 00!
CARBONAR1 12-20-2011, 04:05 AM You're dead right Rod. :fact
I had a mad thrash on the 01 today, and it's much more instant and aggressive with the quick throttle.
So much so, that I'm pissing off the old Pilot Roads tomorrow, for some lightly used Pures I have in the shed.
And I'm going to harass my suspension mechanic for that specially modified shock he's been promising to build me for a year!
All of a sudden, grip and composure are a lot more important than they used to be. :jump
Benocehcap 12-20-2011, 04:58 AM So Ben, your saying that the Robby Moto quick throttle from a 06 R1 bike will fit perfectly on a 01R1?:dundun:
CARBONAR1 12-20-2011, 05:34 AM Ahhhh nope.
I was saying the OEM 01 and 06 throttle tubes and housings are the same.
The 06 is fuel injected, not carburetted, and the 06 cables are MUCH shorter.
So the Robby Moto throttle cables and matching housing wont fit.
Sorry Beno, you will need to do the forum Quick Throttle mod, and put a longer cable in the OEM 01 outer.
Unless Rod or someone else knows of another way.
The good thing is, you'll save $280 that way!
JDollaz 12-20-2011, 05:53 AM That's awesome, idk how I missed this thread for 4 months but Better late than never.

All in one here. ;)
Actually, I dislike Apple products. I bought an iPod new and within a week it corrupted itself. Reformat, different systems, even replacing it under warranty still caused issues. After that, I'll never own an Apple product again. I don't even like iTunes. It screws with the cataloging that I do with MP3's.
But, this isn't an iWhatever thread. :crash

CARBONAR1 12-21-2011, 11:32 PM While I was fitting the Pures today, I spoke to my man Chocky, and he already has an 01 shock spread out and waiting. He's getting a RaceTech rebound seperator which, combined with the valving formula he's worked out, and possibly an 06+ R6 spring, he promises me will feel the same as the Ohlins on my 06. He does regular RaceTech update classes, so he has his finger on current technology. I might be getting it tomorrow....I might have to wait a couple of weeks. I'm bloody excited I can tell you...The Ohlins shock was as big an improvement to the 06, as the BST wheels. :jump
polakw/aR1 12-22-2011, 12:24 AM yes I just fitted an ohlins shock to my 06 and its like night and day
CARBONAR1 12-22-2011, 12:59 AM Isn't it? :jump
It's most noticeable when you get hard on the gas coming out of a corner. I found so much more feedback and feel, it has massively improved my corner exits on any bike I ride now. I have a much greater understanding of what I'm feeling, and how much slip or grip I have.
Congratulations Dave. :thumbup

Yeah, me too. I had (and destroyed) a 96 and a 97. The 97 had kitted carbs, velocity stacks, ignition advancer, full Akrapovic, adjustable triple clamps, race clip ons and rearsets, Ohlins shock and fork internals, Marchesinis, fibreglass tank, race tail and fairing with an offset single VFR400 headlight. It was all white with flourecent orange race plates and logos, with thin black outlines...So 90's ...well, actually it looked quite similar to the latest RC8R colour wise. I miss that bike...it was brilliant.

I wrapped them, it wasn't that hard. But the vinyl has pulled away from the concave areas over the year.

CARBONAR1 12-30-2011, 03:19 AM It was nucking futs until I stacked it doing 220+kph into a barrier....I got $3k for the wreck of it. :(
I walked away with a scuff on the elbow of my leathers.
CARBONAR1 01-05-2012, 02:36 AM I picked up an exchange shock from my local Race Tech technician today. It's an 01 R1 shock, with a modified 03 R6 valve, his own shims, a Race Tech rebound seperator, a 9.25 kg spring and new oil and gas. It only took me 10 minutes to swap them, using a trolley jack and a 14mm socket and spanner...a new record :flex::lol
I took it for a long thrash on all the types of roads I ride regularly. Open fast sweepers, medium speed switchbacks, and bumpy, tight and twisty goat tracks.
What a transformation. To start with it's 5mm taller in the rear, and the turn in is so precise and accurate. It doesn't quite have the road grain feel of the Ohlins in the 06, but a bit of fiddling with the comp and rebound, and I can make it comfier or harder. The drive out of corners is massively improved, it hooks up and drives as hard as the motor can go. The wallow has gone on the change of direction, and it feels sure footed and accurate at medium to high lean. I got a decent amount of fur on the front and rear, considering it was a road ride!
It's like a new bike. It's not as single track minded as the 06, but it's neutral and easy. It feels lighter, and much more confidence inspiring. I feel safe sending the Mrs out on it now.
This is my first experience with Race Tech upgrades and knowledge, and I'm very bloody impressed. And that's comparing it to my 06.
Cheers Chocky, at Road and Race Motorcycles, Churchill road. Bloody brilliant work, mate. :thumbup
fjorn 01-05-2012, 03:20 AM Very interesting, Ben. Is that a stock shock rebuilt, or an aftermarket refitted?

CARBONAR1 01-05-2012, 03:28 AM He started out with a stock 01 shock, I promised to swap my standard 01 shock for his modified one. All up it cost me $200 in parts and labour at mates rates. If I'd spent another $220 and bought a Race Tech Goldvalve , it would of been practically the same as an an Ohlins in feel and performance. But I'm skint, and I wanted this bike to be easy for my girl, an occasional trackday, weekend thrashes in the rain, and commuting. So it's better not feeling like a full race Ohlins. :)
CARBONAR1 01-05-2012, 03:29 AM Gee whizz sounds impressive :fact makes me wonder why I just got a YA343 :sneaky NOT, :hammer:

I'm sure the corner speed will more than make up for the .0005 km/h I loose on a straight but meh, I'm allowed to whine I run out of beer.

By the way...that $1600 was brand new, with the correct spring for my weight, and revalved to superstock specs by Graves, in 07. $849 is nearly half price! If I had an 04-06 model I'd so be buying a brand new Ohlins shock.

xdonniedarkox 01-17-2012, 10:41 PM Be careful there could be a closet and a gimp suit in your future:crash
towie 01-17-2012, 10:47 PM "Bring out the gimp!"
"But the gimps sleeping"
"Well you just gonna have to wake him up now... wont you?"
Yeah, my missus (and newborn baby boy) might have a bit of a problem with all of that too.

oldMadBrit 01-18-2012, 05:13 PM ........
This is my first experience with Race Tech upgrades and knowledge, and I'm very bloody impressed. And that's comparing it to my 06.
.......
I put RaceTech valves in my original 99 forks and man what a transformation! That's why I went for their 25mm cartridges in the new forks (I also wanted to do something different than Ohlins on the front - just for the hell of it). So with 25mm RaceTech's on the front and the Ohlins on the back I can feel every grain of grit in the road from both ends - at first it was almost too much feedback.
CARBONAR1 01-18-2012, 06:45 PM Awesome :thumbup I got a similar feel from the rear, tons of information and grip. I'll do the forks later this year when I've got the $, for the moment I'll have to make do with an oil change.

That is the single biggest pet hate of mine on mosickles... People putting stickers on their bike of parts that aren't on it...
Put a bloody RaceTech sticker on it ya fool :2bitchsla
I've got some here if you need one Ben :fact
And don't go giving me any of that "It's an Ohlins spring" crap either.
Consider yourself spanked.

towie 01-24-2012, 07:03 PM If its got an Ohlins spring on it, then it is more Ohlins than the 'real' Ohlins found on the XJR1300SP.
My suspension guy reckons that even tho they have Ohlins written all over them, and they look like Ohlins, they dont contain Ohlins valving. Apparently they're the ugly child born of the Yamaha-Ohlins marriage when Yamaha owned an influencial share in the Swedish company, AND, part of the reason why Yamaha no longer own a share of Ohlins - it's been suggested that Yamaha was, in a way, cheapening the brand.
Ohlins certainly dont seem to be suffering from the separation.
Anyhoo, I reckon with a RaceTech sticker it will look both trick AND authentic! Nice.
CARBONAR1 01-25-2012, 04:55 PM It's a Racetech spring...:blush The only genuine Ohlins part on the shock, is the sticker....:lol

Not for long hopefully...
ebags 01-26-2012, 04:23 AM :hammer: I'll come clean...the rotors on the 06 aren't really carbon....it's just 3M DiNoc stuck to some Chinese Ebay rotors! :crash
How did I miss this...

Ha! That's hilarious.
I was fooled. It's the right shade of yellow and all.

Ohlins was only a part owner and a minority at that. Ohlins bought back 95% of their un owned interest and Yamaha only owns 5% of Ohlins if that. Who suggested Yamaha cheapened Ohlins, have a link?
After Lawson won the 500cc champ Ohlins was struggling to grow Yamaha came in as an angel investor and help the company grow to where it is now
towie 01-26-2012, 03:12 PM Who suggested Yamaha cheapened Ohlins, have a link?
My suspension guy told me that. From his mouth. No link. Sorry.
I think his view is based on the fact that Yamaha were throwing the the Ohlins name on inferior products... like cheapo XJR shocks... because they could. And maybe he read something about it somewhere too? I dont know.
Plenty of good research came out of the business relationship. Remember the 2WD R1?
Edit - sorry Carbonar1, this is borderline hijacking... back to the point now...
markosaspiotis 02-15-2012, 09:49 AM very good job Ben... i can say that i love your threads...!!! :)

towie 04-25-2012, 03:29 PM That looks great mate! Much better than plain old black. I've been looking at the variaous speedo faces that are available, but they're mostly too lairey for my liking.
I google'd 'Letraset', but I'm still lost, are those numbers decals?
CARBONAR1 04-25-2012, 04:43 PM Yeah, you can get them at newsagencies and art shops, sometimes...I don't know if they're still being produced. I've got a bunch of old sheets going back years. I've done that to most of my tachos. :thumbup

I realized this is an older thread, don't ask how I got here. lol
So why is the front end hanging up on the wall in between the two bikes highlighted in this picture, or was that a fluke? :lol

I know what it is, I just think it's funny that if you zoom in on the pic, the forks look like they are highlighted with a circle, almost like Ben wanted us to see them. Lol
