: Thnakdone's 99 Hybrid
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 07:24 PM I picked up my bike a few years ago on a trade with some guy for my old GMC jimmy and a TV... LOL
Yeah she was rough when I got her, forks were leaking, fairing had some rash/damage and the clutch was starting to slip. A few months into fixing her I found out I had a wiring issue (burnt/corroded terminals). SO I had to deploy to Iraq before I could finish going through and fixing the wiring issues, but my loving wife got it fixed for me for my birthday while I was gone!
After some reading I found that the 04 & up front ends are WAY better and liven up the old girls, I found one on Craigslist and got Fikays to pick it up for me while I was still in Iraq. the attached pics are from before and during the front end swap.
First off I want to thank Fikays, Carbonar1, and Blur1 for all the info and help I have had with this bike so far.
I used an 06 front end I got off of Craigslist, wanted a 07-08 front but couldnt find one at the time. Everything swapped in with no problems, but I had to use my old mastercyinder and brake lines till I get the 90 degree adapter from kurveygirl for the radial MC and new braided lines.
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 07:37 PM I also was curious about using the stock dampener from the 06 front end since the 99 didnt come with one. The pics show it installed. I had to do some fabbing to make it work, but it is in there and doing well so far, havent ridden it yet. First I had to mock up the center mount point to make sure the damper would clear the instrument cluster when turned to each extreme. Next problem was the ignition hitting the mountwhen you turn it to the right. Carbonar1 ad said he had to shave off some of the mounting lugs for the ignition so the lock mechanism would work, but also to help clear the mount. I had to do the same. I shaved of approximately 5mm from the lugs and well as shave a little off of the mount, mainly help shape it for clearance.
What I did notice was that the steering stops on the 06 triple lower is farther apart than the 99, by about 5-10mm, so not much. THe dampener maxes out before hitting the stops though.
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 07:41 PM Hopefully this weekend I will swap in the 06 rear wheel I picked up as well. I got an 03 rear caliper and hanger for it... thanks again to Carbonar for the trial process to find what does and doesnt work to put the 06 rear wheel in a 1st gen swinger.
Fikays 10-07-2011, 08:11 PM Looking good, Dennis! :thumbup Now all you need is an 02/03 swinger! :lol
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 08:19 PM nah... I am still waiting to hear about the 06 or newer swinger swaps...lol
Fikays 10-07-2011, 08:20 PM nah... I am still waiting to hear about the 06 or newer swinger swaps...lol
FireHawk and I talked about it quite a bit....might not be worth the hassle. :dunno Be only a cosmetic upgrade to an 03 swinger.
SSPilot 10-07-2011, 10:26 PM Awesome work Dennis! She's coming along great. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-07-2011, 10:37 PM thanks... it has been a good while worth of planning to get where I am now, just a few more things as well as a couple cosmetic things and I will be happy.... she needs to go down to Micah at AF1Racing for a full tune and dyno time...
SSPilot 10-07-2011, 10:40 PM thanks... it has been a good while worth of planning to get where I am now, just a few more things as well as a couple cosmetic things and I will be happy.... she needs to go down to Micah at AF1Racing for a full tune and dyno time...
Amen brother! :thumbup
CARBONAR1 10-08-2011, 06:02 AM That's brilliant Dennis. :)
It's great to see a solid bike rescued and brought back to life.
Have you got the clutch cable sorted? I forgot to mention I used an 07 one.
And to reduce the lockstops so you don't bottom out your damper. You could drill stops on the frame or the triples with a 5mm bit. Tap the holes out to 6mm, and put a hex headed bolt in there. Or even cut up a wheel balance weight and stick it to the stops.
:thumbup
thnakdone 10-09-2011, 12:40 PM im not really having any issues with the clutch cable since I routed it to the inside ot the radiator's water neck...I have been thinking about swapping in a new one anyway since I am unsure how good it is overall. I think I will go the wheel weightroute for the steering stops... especially since I have the upper back on...LOL I just nee to finish making the mount for my devil eyes switch. I mocked up one to sit next to the instrument cluster and uses the left upper mount hole for the headlight to the upper fairing....
Trick project. I'm diggin' the flat black and bare metal scheme. Very "winter test-ish"
Stupid ignition barrel...always getting in the way of the important things....

thnakdone 10-10-2011, 04:46 AM thanks SAB.... never really been one for alot of flash on my bike nor bling... I rather the bike run and perform well than be pretty... although the scheme is pretty to me... my wife likes it so much as well that the ex500 iI just bought her is getting the same treatment ( her choice)...
CARBONAR1 10-10-2011, 02:21 PM Cool, twins....sort of. :thumbup
thnakdone 10-12-2011, 06:52 AM Well last night I completed the bezel for the Devil eye's control switch. Pics are posted below. I wanted the switch to be more hidden and out of the way. I just took some scrap 1/8" aluminum plate, mocked up what I needed it to look like with a piece of cardboard and went to work. I am pleased with the result. I made sure to use some black wire loom on the wires to make it look clean as well.
Next is swapping in the 06 rear wheel....
thnakdone 12-11-2011, 09:27 PM ok so some updates on the bike... now the 06 rear wheel has been put on with the 02-03 rear caliper and mount. I made sure to use the 06 hub and wheel spacers for the sprocket side with the 99 rh side spacer in the RH side to match up the spacingfor the rotor.
thnakdone 12-11-2011, 09:35 PM I also swapped in a radial front MC and braided lines, plus picked up a CRG SS clutch perch/lever assy and swapped it in. I also swapped out the cracked tail that I originally had from one I got from Fikays and then put on the R1 decals I ad ordered for her. I love the look of the 3m Dinoc vinyl with the red reflective background on the flat black paint. I also pulled off the passenger pegs and painted them semigloss black and prayed a few layers of clear on top of it all. I also swapped Tigon clear tubing on th efront and rear MC's (1/4" up front, 5/16" on the rear) and stayed with the RBF 600 brake fluid.
thnakdone 12-11-2011, 09:36 PM I will try and get better pics sometime this week and post them up for all to see here...
CARBONAR1 12-11-2011, 10:02 PM Very cool man, that looks beastly. :bow
mm_R1 12-11-2011, 10:02 PM Well done! That looks great. :-)

Thanks for your service!
thnakdone 12-12-2011, 08:09 PM Thanks guys... there's still a few things I want to do to her... still need to take her to see micah for a tune and dyno runs...
CARBONAR1 12-12-2011, 10:32 PM ... there's still a few things I want to do to her...
Thank god for that!....I don't want to hear the F word from you! :lol
thnakdone 12-13-2011, 12:10 PM Thank god for that!....I don't want to hear the F word from you! :lol
LOL... I will never say the F word... if anything it would be finished for now... always will find something else that is new and trick to put on her... LOL besides maybe one day I will be able to afford one of those flashy carbon tanks or a set of carbon wheels... LOL
oldMadBrit 12-17-2011, 04:37 PM Sweet bike!
When you swapped the forks did you use the 04-06 tripple tree or keep the original 98-99?
Just asking because the 04-06 forks are 15mm shorter than the 98-99 forks and the 98-99 tripple tree has a lot less trail than the 04-06. So putting stock length 04-06 forks (-15mm) in 98-99 tripples can make what is alteady a head shaker into a tank slapping fright fest.
To retain the original geometry, the 04-06 forks need to be lengthened by 15mm if you put them in the 98-99 tripples.
Alternatively, you can use the 04-06 tripples and forks with the result that the trail lost by dropping the front 15mm is recovered by the additional trail of the 04-06 tripples.
thnakdone 01-01-2012, 10:36 AM I used the 06 triples and it is dropped about 10mm as well in the triples.... sorry I hadnt noticed your post. I have been gone for the past week and doing everything on here with my phone so I don't see when anyone posted to any of my sub'd threads...LOL
I have to say i like th efeel of the 06 front end on mine, it feels smoother and tighter than the old set up! :fact
thnakdone 01-01-2012, 10:38 AM so an update.... unfortunately the reverse gear in my Mustang gave up the ghostso there wont be any upgrades to the black widow (R1) for a whole hot minute.... having to dump $1600 into my tranny kinda slowed any upgrades down a lot!
CARBONAR1 01-01-2012, 03:31 PM Just park the car so that you don't need to reverse out....spend the money on the bike. You know it makes sense. :yesnod :crash
thnakdone 01-01-2012, 04:21 PM you know I did think about that one... unfortunately I cant do that one at all at work and well I dont have the required paperwork/completed class to ride the bike to work on post (military requirements).... I thought about that onethough bc I was already planning on spending that money on the mustang, but not for the transmission rebuild.... UGH...
CARBONAR1 01-01-2012, 05:01 PM Yeah, that does suck balls man. :(
thnakdone 10-10-2012, 09:12 PM Reallized I haven't updated this in a while... I have added a CRG supersport clutch perch, magical racing carbon chain guard, carbon rear fender, vortex gas cap, and a m4 full ti system..... also did the superbike rear reservoir delete as well..... this bike has so much that I have done over time I forget a lot of it...:lol started driving it a lot to work... take it more than the car now in fact....
