I purchased my R1 new in March 2008. I moved from an SV650 which was heavily modified, with the intention of using the R1 on the street and the SV650 on the track (SV had upgraded suspension, brakes, exhaust, carbs, etc). After riding the SV650 on the track in April that year, I found it underwhelming and quickly put it up for sale, purchasing an 04 GSXR 750 for the track, and also deciding to do some investments in terms of parts to the R1.

About me, I am a bigger guy, 6'1", 300 pounds in full gear. So the R1 fit me very well. I felt the R1 was a great platform, but after upgrading parts on the SV650 setting it apart from the rest, I wanted some more trick items on the R1 to set me apart from other bikes.

Although anyone can do bolt-on upgrades and style changes, I wanted my R1 to "look" like other non-modified bike, just wanted to improve the performance. It wasn't long after owning the bike I started making purchases. Within a month I had 3000 miles on the R1, already through a set of tires, and swapped out the ECU to get rid of the 5500 RPM throttle lag, I then felt it was time to start the modifications.

First I bought a full titanium Graves exhaust/CF cans, PC3, iridium plugs, smog block-off plates, BMC race filter, ASV Levers, mirror block-off plates, adapters for the CRG bar-end mirrors, dark-tint windscreen, Galfer SS lines, proton flush mounts, integrated tail light, and motivation frame sliders. All the parts arrived and still within 30-days of buying the bike, I was tearing it down to upgrade parts.

I started with removed the smog-control system and installed all the parts, using the Graves map for full exhaust. The bike felt much stronger and the weight reduction from the exhaust was phenomenal.

I continued to ride that 2008 year, spending a lot of my time on the track with my 750, doing 18 track days, and still managing to ride the R1 10,000 miles on the street. Having upgraded the 750's suspension to Ohlin's internals I decided in the winter of 08 that I should install some Ohlin's goodies on the R1. On the SV650, I had done the Traxxion Dynamics damper rod, springs, cartridge emulators, and pre-load adjusters to the forks, and added a Penske double to the rear. The 750 already had a Penske Triple on it, and "race-tech" valves, but when I had issues at Barber, Superbike Suspension's Ken Hall found the front to be "hacked" together (an article was actually written about this on trackdaymag.com) I had the internals replaced with an Ohlins kit and continued to ride the 750.

Ken was my first call for the R1 suspension. I decided instead of just upgrading the internals, R&T forks were going to be installed, along with the TTX rear shock. Ken did the order, built the forks to my specs (spring weight, valving, etc), and then dropped them off for me to install. I have been the only one to work on my R1, besides having the specialists do the work on the suspension. So back to the shop I went.

I put on the forks and shock and took the bike for a ride. Amazing. The bike was totally different. Felt stable throughout the corners, didn't aggressively nose dive when on the brakes, and just handled like a bike should. I continued to ride the R1 and enjoy the bike.

The summer of 09 I decided to purchase some wheels for the R1. I talked to people I had met at sportbiketrackgear.com while attending some track days, and they had Dymag carbon wheels listed on their site, so I gave them a call to place an order. Then I waited. And waited. And Waited. Backorder. I talked to Ken Hall again, BST could be sent to me within 3 days, cancelled the one order, got the BST wheels ordered and waited for the arrival. Part of my order with STG was for Galfer wave rotors, and after spending time on here, seeing the CMC brake rotors, and discussing them with Ken, I decided to do some brakes on the R1 while I was at it.

Order Braketech CMC rotors, Brembo HP calipers, and a Brembo 19RCS master for the bike. Also gave Ken the measurements for the Spiegler custom lines for the front of the bike to replace the dual Galfer lines I had, decided to clean it up and go with a T's line instead, with single connection to the master.

I left the rear brake alone, because who uses the rear (that was my thought then, now that I take my wife for rides, and have run faster on the track, I have increased my speed enough to need to use it, which is why I upgraded it later), and I added the parts to the bike. I had already purchased a No-Mar tire changer because of all the track days and driving 60 miles one way to a buddy with one, it was economically needed. So the only person changing tires on the BST wheels has been me.

Throughout the life of the bike I have added/removed modifications to the bike. Changing grips when I wear them out, adding lights, changing to the newest "coolest" item for the bike, trying to give myself the best performing bike possible. I am planning on updating this story to include the rest of the build and adjustments and what I felt about each of the changes and differences in the parts.

I also have pictures I will load from my previous build thread, and include will be taking pics of the current installs happening:

Ballistic 8-cell battery
Revolver quick turn throttle
Rear Brembo HP caliper and under swingarm mount
Samco red silicon hoses

Here are some photos from this morning 3/13/2012 of her finished right before leaving for work. She is far from a garage queen, mostly go fast parts with a few parts to improve the look. Scratches here and there, and not a perfect cleaning job (especially since the ground was wet this morning):

Just have to get time to take some new photos and finish the write ups. I did this on my lunch hour yesterday, and well, I have quite a bit more typed, just need to add it. Too busy rebuilding servers today, but I will move the pics from my original thread over, and I have a few more pics to upload.

I am in the process of installing the Ballistic Battery and moving the Bazzaz to the battery box, along with the Speedo Healer. That will free up the room in the tail, and means I don't have to wrap it up when converting the bike to track setup.

I will keep expanding on this. I am far from done with the bike.

I think my ultimate purchase for the bike was the 30x40 garage I built at my house to hold the bike... I will post up pics to that build thread from our louisvillesportbikes.com site...

I have a TON to add to this thread...

Here is the garage build. I need to take finished pics of it, but I haven't had time to finish cleaning it up. I will try and take some fresh pics of the bike tonight, it's pretty naked though, as I haven't finished putting street stuff back on the bike since control riding at Putnam on Sept 4. I got married on September 10, and we are currently remodeling some of the kitchen.

Life is just way too busy...

Anyway, here is the thread with the Garage build to at least keep you all coming back:

Wow, what a garage too Michael...!

The garage was fun to build and still coming along. It's 80% insulated. I have to finish running the Rapid Air system, and some more electric, then I will finish the insulation. I have about 70% of the electric installed in the garage, just want to do some more custom lighting around the cabinet and work areas.

I am planning to get an air powered motorcycle lift in the next 6 months (have to pay for the kitchen cabinets first). Once I have that, it will help me complete the shop area.

I have spare conduits, a gas trunk line and everything underground to the garage, so it looks nice and works well.

The spiral staircase is great too.

I store my 6x12' v-nose trailer in the back corner, and have it on wheel dollies and a caster under the nose jack. Let's me spin it around the garage with ease.

It's a toss up, do I work on the garage, bike, or house in my spare time? Or please my new wife by spending time with her, so in turn she can keep me happy????

It's fun.

I will update with some more information soon.

The difference is all the internals and how they operate. As far as fitment, they are the same. You would have no issues.

If you don't mind, there is a mechanical help section, it'd be better ti keep inquiries there to not take these build threads off topic.

I will try to remember to take pics as she goes back together. Took about 3 hours to get those hoses changed. Also got the tires changed on the bike and on Monday or Tuesday I should have my new Driven sprockets and chain. (Figured since she was apart I would give her a fresh drivetrain...)

After breakfast tomorrow I plan on heading out and doing the wiring changes, new battery, move the bazzaz, clean up a few wires, Cox radiator guard, new grips, Engine Ice, clean her up from the hose change, balance the wheels, install new Tygon hoses, bleed the brakes, finish the install for the AIM dash, and start getting her clothes back on. I hope to have her rideable by Sunday.... and of course some photos.

And I get to play around with the ECU and the flashing interface... finally.

Happy Birthday to me! In 20 days I turn 33, and well, I decided it was time I give my back a break. I just bought a bike lift for myself. It's the "Handy" style of lift, and I just put my baxley chalk on it to check how it works (I didn't raise the bike without strapping it down). I have the front wheel chalk in a box, just didn't take the time to install it last night after un-crating this beast. Thing weighs around 500 pounds. It's a 1000 pound lift.

It won't be sitting here, it was just a quick place to put it until I get the shop area cleaned up. I have on order a small two wheel dolly so I can easily slide it under the side of the trailer when not in use so it won't be in the way of the shop.

I am excited that I don't have to roll around on the ground any more! :flex:

:stpd: Hope all is well...

Yeah, just been a busy, busy summer/fall. My R1 is still in track trim and rain tires from our VERY wet track day on Labor Day weekend. I have been riding the FZ1 quite a bit (swapped the forks for my 07 R1 OEM forks and had some valving and springs done, Ohlins rear shock, put on the OEM R1 calipers/rotors, Carbone Loraine SBK5 pads, stainless lines front and rear, Brembo 19RCS master, with RBF600 brake fluid, and some "highway pegs"). FZ1 handles better with the 10mm shorter forks, rides smoother, stops on a dime, and is very comfortable.

I haven't been on any forums lately, doing a massive server migration at work, retiring about 20 servers, upgrading to all VMs and Windows 2008 R2, new Exchange 2010 server, new Forefront TMG, new backup solution (Appassure), new SharePoint 2013 server, and more... and I am the only one working on it. It was going to be a 9 month project done in phases and the powers that be decided to purchase the equipment early (while I was on jury duty for 2 weeks), and then decided 4 months would be the appropriate amount of time for building/testing/deployment. Lucky me.

Anyway, I will be done around year end with 90% of it, and in fact today turned off our last Exchange 2003 server. Moving right along and next riding season I should be back in full force...

Any carbon fiber kickstands pop up for a group buy while I was gone??? :lol :lol

:lol

You sound like me. I was expecting a relatively nice, quiet pass into 2013. But, powers that be decided to throw me into some extremely high profile projects at work and want me to work on standards when 90% of the servers for the project have already been built and nearly into production. :shake

Well, 2012 was another "slow" year on the R1. Just a couple of track days, and not a ton of miles on the street. I have been riding the FZ1 more on the street as the R1 stayed in track trim most of the year.

Here is the FZ1:

http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=486409&stc=1&d=1364908845

Over the last two weeks I started to get the R1 back to street trim since I am taking a trip down to the Gap in a month for nice weekend with a few buddies. Seemed I kept hitting snags on the conversion back to street. First I picked up my two wires for the Hella High Note horn, and next thing I know, one of them is missing. Looked everywhere, it just vanished, and I couldn't find my crimps or connectors to make a new one, so on I went.

I continued to clean and get the plastics back in order and I started to get the HIDs ballasts back in the bike. Wait, where is my 30 amp fuse... Yup, it vanished too, and all my spare fuses are minis... grrr, 10 PM, all the places are closed, and I don't feel like trying to find a 24 hour place to get some, off to bed.

I finally got the fuses, finally found my crimps, and out to the garage. I start cleaning a little and sure enough, there is the wire I have been looking for, under my bike lift, so I connect it and the horn works as it should, loud as hell, just the way I like it. I put in the fuse and the lights fire up, great.

I had rain tires on the R1 due to the very wet track day in September. I got the front changed, and started to remove the rear. Uh oh... stuck rear axle. It wouldn't budge, rubber mallet, nope. Piece of wood and a hammer, nope. Hmmm, grab a spare axle from the FZ1 (I put my old R1 front end on the FZ1, so I had the OEM FZ1 front axle), and used it as a punch. It finally started to move and came out.

It seems that the lightly lubed axle mixed with a VERY wet track day, and then sitting for 6 months didn't make removing the axle very easy. The front came out fine, but the spacer in the center of the rear BST wheel has enough space between it and the axle that water sat in between and caused corrosion of the axle and oxidation of the spacer(s). After removing, took a scotch brite dremel pad and the dremel and cleaned out the corrosion from the spacers, cleaned up the axle, changed the tire, and then checked the bearings. They felt gritty... great, I ruined a set of ceramic bearings with standing water next to them and "beating" on the axle, potentially causing lateral pressure issues...

Lucky for me, I have a set of spare ceramic bearings for the BST wheels. (yeah, who the hell has a spare set, this guy... :flex: ) So they went in the freezer while I removed the old bearings, a heat gun to the carriers and plop, new bearings installed. Applied some anti-seize lubricant to the rear axle and got it all back together.

Replaced all the OEM dzus fasteners with some quarter turn d-ring dzus bolts, finished cleaning everything up, installed the new Pilot 3 tires (can't wait to try these out), and she is back to road worthy status ready for a Gap trip.

Very nice...though you should come to VIR with us this weekend :)...and then CMP at the end of the month...and then Road Atlanta in May and July, and....well you get the picture :lol

I go within a few minutes of your house to every SE track. Stopping to load your bike wouldn't be hard :D

Oh come on, she just got her street clothes on, and now you want me to strip her down and put that naughty clothes back on... :sing:

Trust me, I wish I could, too much going on in life right now. Friday I have an MRI of my pituitary gland, hopefully it's going to come out normal... although if it doesn't it explains a lot of things happening in my life right now...

Things will improve, and some day I will be out on the track a bit more, right now I have to get things at home straightened out and ride when I can.

Yay! Update.

Glad to see things are sorted out. I'm really hoping to start a thread here to make you not the only 07/08 on this page.

Oh, and the FZ1 looks spectacular.

The FZ1 isn't as trick as the R1, but it's close. All the power adders are done (IVANS Stuff and PCIII with Ivans map), Graves slip on and mid-pipe, suspension is Ohlins in the rear, OEM 07 R1 forks with Race Tech gold valving in the front, proper spring rate, Brembo 19RCS master, stainless lines, R1 OEM rotors, R1 OEM calipers, Carbonne Loraine XBK5 pads in the front, some highway pegs (for comfort), most of the bright stuff powder coated black, some bar end weights, carbon fiber chin fairing, and some more I bet I am forgetting.

It's quite a fun bike to ride, far more comfortable than the R1, and rather peppy... not as much as the R1, but it's fun.

I've got the same R1, but yours has the dream list of goodies. Well done sir!
