2nutty 03-19-2003, 01:11 AM i wana either polish or chrome my frame on my o3 R1 how do i get the black paint or powder coat off? in short of sanding it off i heard there is a product simular to what we use to take paint off of our wheelz but need to know what it is thanks!!
I heard Easy Off baking stuff works good plus airplane stripper
2nutty 03-19-2003, 01:41 AM thanks tate anyone else got something to add?
Kelial 03-19-2003, 02:17 AM I am in the process of polishing my wheels. I am using paint stripper. As long as you apply a LOT of it, it works rather well. I have heard that airplane grade stripper works extremely well, but I have no idea as to how to get it. Other than that, sanding it down is the only other way I know of.
BTW, you ARE planning on taking the bike apart first right? As far as I know, that is the only way to make sure you get the entire frame and don;t screw up anything else.

I meant paint stripper, sorry! :) Oh yeah, look up tidbits Hot ToPolishing 101. It looked like it could be very useful
caliboy02r1 03-20-2003, 06:07 PM i'm in the process of polishing mine, that black paint is a biiiattchh. i used paint stripper, some parts worked great some parts i had to apply it again, just use a generous amount of stripper. if i would have known about using airplane stripper, cuz i could have got my hands on some of that.
medpilot 03-21-2003, 01:34 AM you could take it somewhere to get it sandblasted. I don't think they would charge that much and it would be quick and even.
Kelial 03-21-2003, 01:40 AM Anyone know where the hell I an buy airplane stripper? I used the regular paint stripper for the rear wheel I have, but I want to make it wasier for the front.
Thanks
2nutty 03-21-2003, 02:08 AM u should be able to get it at local automotive stores like autozone. i think the kind that i used on my rims was called air kleen spelled just like that
lam252psu 03-22-2003, 10:25 AM I polished my 99 frame... granted it wasnt black, but it still had that shitty clear coat on it.. I went to NAPA and asked for the strongest stuff they had. they had a can of this sheeeeiiiaat that worked wonders. So good, that it would melt the brush (handle) about every 20 minutes! Oven cleaner also works (easy off) but I would leave that on for a long time! good luck!

tidbit 03-22-2003, 03:46 PM Your 03 R1 has a painted frame.. So using oven cleaner would be overkill... Get some think (gooey) paint stripper.. with a brush.. and take dat shitznit off...
Sorry for not replying your post sooner.. I'm away on a vacation =)
2nutty 03-22-2003, 05:03 PM thanks tidbit i was waiting patiently for ya lol
RATED_XXX 03-23-2003, 06:50 PM Just got done stripping my wheels to have them powder coated!
I used a basic paint stripper from an autoparts store!
I found out that the paint removes easier when the wheel or part your working with is warm!
I tried doing this when the wheel was cold and it wouldn't touch the paint!
I put the wheels in a room and cranked up the heat for a while! Sprayed the stripper on and waited a few minutes and the paint began to lift off! The toughest part was the casted area! The paint wants to stay in the pits!
But after all that I ended up having them glass bead blasted to remove all the paint! Make sure you do not use sand if you are going to blast them!
After that waist of time I ended up decing to send the wheels out and have them chromed!
tidbit 03-26-2003, 02:14 PM The reason why I suggest thick paintstripper... Is because as we all know a frame is not a flat surface.. If you use paint stripper that is water like... it'll get EVERYWHERE..
if you can find airplane grade (thick) stripper that'll work better.. But it's best to go thick forst ;).. and then find the strongest
MrGibbs 04-10-2003, 07:29 PM I polished my O2... used all of that airplane stripper, easy off and the whole nine... I found that the best way to remove the paint is to use a good orbital sander with sandpaper. The lower, rough part of the frame will require you to go all the way down to about 80 grit, but you cann get away with 100's to 200's on the other parts. My only recommendation is to be careful around the welds. On the welds is the only place I used aircraft stripper and a wire brush (brass) to get in the cracks. Hope this helps!;)
2nutty 04-10-2003, 11:32 PM mr gibbs got anypics? if u do send them to sin_on2_wheels@yahoo.com would love to see some pics!
