I changed the one on my 02 R1. Here is what I did.
1. Remove windscreen
2. Remove speedo and unplug (be careful, I dropped mine)
3. Pull out the needle and remove old faceplate
4. Install new faceplate
When you put the needle back, make sure it rests on zero. You can push it all the way in but be gentle. Plug the gauge back in and start the bike. Make sure you have the needle set up right and that it can move freely before you put it all back together. I had to do mine several times before I got it right. I hope these directions work for your year R6

If the face will not come off from the original face, just put the one you bought on top of the old one.I hope it works for you.

On the newer bikes with gauges where the needle doesn't rest against a pin at 0: To install the needle just put it in and turn it counterclockwise until it is at 0. You will feel a little resistance but it's not going to break.
Not sure if the bike you speak of has the pin or not.

I did it on a friends R6 (I havent gotten to mine yet) but if you take a kitchen fork, put it under the needle and GENTLY pry, you should be good. Word of advice though, I did it gently, and the ****er still shot all the way across the garage. Good luck!

It will come out. Just apply gradual force. It's in there pretty good.

If your clock is anything like a '99 R1 clock then you may well not be able to remove the disc with the numbers on. I bought a yellow clock face to replace the original black one and in the kit they gave some very fine wet & dry paper to remove the painted markings for the rev counter. I had to rub them away to leave a clear disc and then sit the new plastic onto the disc. It was really easy and looks the badgers nadgers!
The needle pulls off with a fair amount of force (they are all like it) but there is no give - so its either on, or off over the other side of the room. Just try to pull it off perpendicular to the clock face and not twist it over while you exert force.
