I've been riding street since I was 16 (looooong time ago) and have had a fair number of bikes in my time and had pretty much had something in the garage at all times. However when I moved to the US I left my ZXR 750 behind and was here for about 6 years with no bike at all.
Well my 2 son's came over for a visit and as they both now ride too, we went to look for some stuff they could take back that might be a bit unique in the UK.
Well that's where it all started again, we went to a Yamaha dealer and there on display was an 06 R1 all dressed up in my favorite old school racing yellow. So to cut a long story short we came home the same day with 2 jackets for the boys and one R1 for me :jump:jump:jump
Now they did have an LE at the dealer but, a: It was sold and b: I couldn't have afforded it anyway, but that LE would have a lot to answer for.

In the past I'd had bikes to ride and although I always had a habit of trying to keep them as much up together as possible, I'd never really modded any that much and was way behind on what was available. With the gold forks on the 50th my first thought was to go the gold route so without really doing much research I set about adding some bits to make her my own.

First mods that I remember (and I'm old so bear with me) were gold bar ends and some gold tipped LP sliders, my own fender eliminator and some flush mounts. These were followed by a rear cowl and, because I didn't have a stand of any sort, I got some gold Gillies adjusters/lifters and a Harris stand.

I thought she was getting really modded now :lol

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_4421.jpg

Oh nearly forgot the gold pre-load adjusters and punisher cozy

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_4430_1024x683.jpg

After having her for a little while and the sticker shock starting to wear off I decided to spend big (it seemed it then anyway) and I went with Galfer rotors, Sato rear sets and gold Pazzo shorties.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_4596_1026x684.jpg

I had debated going with gold Satos but they seemed a little orangey in the pics, so luckily (I think now anyway) I went with black Sato's.

I thought I had quite a list of add ons back then and couldn't see me doing much more to her, how wrong I was :shake

OK now remember that LE.

By this time I had been on the Forum a while and had started to learn a fair bit about R1's and to catch up on what had been going on in the world or motorcyles. That LE wasn't that much more money because it had some pretty parts on it, those things actually made a difference to the bike and how it rode......huh who knew, not me for sure, but I did now.

So some things had to change and the modding addiction was about to bite and bite hard.

Now the exact order of things here might not be quite right so forgive me but I know that I had learned that LP sliders weren't going to cut it and had to go.

Harris frame sliders (a name I wish I didn't know ) but these should at least work if called upon.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6533.jpg

Followed by clutch and gearbox sliders.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_5858.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_5862.jpg

Then I decided those big antennas had to go, so Greggs block offs, CRG and change the gold bar ends to Graves black (Do you see what's happening to the gold?)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6537.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6547.jpg

Then a big thing happened.
A chance came up to buy some Ohlins R/T forks Still remember that LE ?
So after pondering for a while and then being nice to the wife for about a week I decided to take the plunge.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6619.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6624.jpg

Oh and the seller had a few nice bits of carbon fiber too, seemed such a shame to split it all up.
You probably noticed the front fender above already, then there was the rear hugger with chain guard, exhaust shield and tank sides.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6629.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6529.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6529.jpg

Now she was starting to get close to that LE I had liked so much

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6659.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6671.jpg

Redgecko

Ok so there was still a couple of bits of that LE that I didn't have, namely wheels and rear Ohlins and they seemed like they would both be a long way off, but as luck would have it an opportunity came up for the Ohlins and I took it.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_7541.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_7559.jpg

That was it, I was done, no way could I take her any further for a long time to come.

Now in saying that you can always scrape up enough for some of those little pieces so here's a few of those in no particular order

Harris gas cap (there's that name again)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_7283.jpg

D Zus fasteners

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_6860.jpg

Rizoma oil cap

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_8677.jpg

Rizoma grips

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_8678.jpg

Akrapovic sprocket cover

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9181.jpg

And an upgrade to the cozy

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_8961.jpg

Now what about exhaust you are asking, or at least everyone was back then, why haven't I done the exhaust?

Well, to be honest I liked the lines of the stock system enough to live with it and certainly enough to not want to make me spend the money to change it all.
When something right came along I would know and so in the meantime it was race baffles, gut the cat and carbon heat shields along with fitting a PCIII

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_7563.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject003.jpg

So there she was and I was happy with how she looked.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_7576.jpg

Or so I thought

Redgecko
12-22-2011, 02:50 PM
So are we still remembering that LE.
Well that LE didn't have black calipers and, although I would've liked to upgrade to Brembos, that wasn't going to happen, so what to do.
Fit LE calipers.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9741.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9742.jpg

There that's much better isn't it.
Well in looks it is but it doesn't brake any better.
So I decided to fit an RCS and while I was there I might as well do the reservoirs with some more Rizoma bits.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9061.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9063.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9414.jpg

But wait, the Brembo lever is black and my Pazzos are gold, can't have that can we.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9062.jpg

Now she looks like she can brake properly too, although I'll have to do something with the reservoir hose :fact

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9735.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9737.jpg

But the rear is just not doing it for me now so better do something there.

Before that however, there was a little matter of a very nice looking swinger I had seen on Carbonar1's bike. Now I am not as skillfull as Ben and I can't weld worth a crap, let alone have the stuff to do it, but there is a local guy to me that it turns out can and he managed to come up with this for me.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject016.jpg

Perfect, and so we end up with this and I just love the look it gives.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject043.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject046.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject025-1.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/SwingArmProject033-1.jpg

Well love it apart from that rear caliper that is, so......

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_9752.jpg

I think I might actually like this more than the LE now, I can finally stop regretting not buying one

Redgecko
12-22-2011, 02:51 PM
Another couple of small bits followed, Votex top triple and clip ons and some tygon clear tubing to deal with that earlier problem

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1/Updates022.jpg

And a Evotech triple nut so I can put a triple mount GPS holder in there

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Nuts2008.jpg

Then another big one hit.
I found a great deal on a set of Brembo HP nickels and didn't have the heart to let them pass

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_3700.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/013.jpg

Braking performance goes up yet another level.

Now the factory cowl, although well fitting, never was ideal for me. I wanted a race tail but i wanted a race tail that had a full undertail and had the fit and finish of OEM. My solution was via the guy that did my swinger, one spare tail and cowl and he would have it sorted.
At the same time I was also able to address another thing that bugged me (even on an LE :lol) and that was that the color and decals didn't flow in my opinion.
This is the result

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1/017.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1/020.jpg

And now the paint lines flow as I would like

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/014.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/015.jpg

Ok with my pondering on tail color having been resolved I could re-visit the exhaust and ended up going with........ yes Harris cans (which were a steal :fact) and an M4 Ti Y pipe. The yellows decals had absolutely no impact on my decision to buy :lol

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Ti010.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Ti012.jpg

I think they work perfectly with everything else I've done and were well worth the wait.

Updated the chain and sprockets too with a 520 setup with lightweight steel rear and gold chain and a -1/+2 change over stock

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Ti013.jpg

Pretty much up to date now with the exception of the last few things over the last few weeks.

Magical racing screen

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1258.jpg

Ohlins steering damper

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Photoshoot126.jpg

And a Bazazz Quichshifter, along with some woodcraft sliders that were fitted somewhere in here :dunno

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1266.jpg

And because I like symmetry I managed to get hold of a Brembo cable clutch lever to balance the RCS along with some nice carbon fiber bars.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1255.jpg

And to finally finish the braking to a level that now far exceeds my abilities, some Braketech full floating iron rotors

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Latest112.jpg

This last one has been the most surprising to me to be able to get done, not just because of what it is but because of how it came about.

If you remember back to my LE ranting, one thing I was missing was wheels and I have always wanted to do something with them. Being a large expenditure it hadn't happened and nor had any really tempting deals come up. Then something happened that I will never forget, a member from here who I have never actually met, although I consider a good friend, gave me and yes you heard right, he gave me a front BST wheel :bow :bow This has made it possible for me to complete that one real missing item from the list and I now have BST wheels, something that I really did think would never happen.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1264.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1268.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/IMG_1270.jpg

So this is where she is as of today, and writing this has made me realize just how far she has come since that day I picked her up. I have probably missed some stuff and she still has a ways to go, but I will never sell her and we'll continue to grow old together :lol

I think I have succeeded at least in building my own LE.

It basically fits the same as it did except there are only 2 bolts instead of 4 holding the under tail via the tag bracket. All the top tail bolts are the same except there is a spacer inside between what was the cowl and the mounting for the bolt in the tail, I then use a longer bolt all the way trough both just like a race tail would be bolted. Does that make sense ?

Yeah that hole at the back is still used and i put a fixed spacer in there so when you tighten down through the cowl you don't want it to crush.
I used a targa cowl too, there is much less filling to do than if you do it with an OEM style with the pad removed.

But just to show some appropriate Christmas sour grapes --- I just bought a Porsche!!!:butt:butt

Merry Christmas buddy!!

Yours is a great build too Andy and being a 50th always has an advantage anyway :fact However on the car front you have a slight lead over my 211,000 Grand Prix, although it does have a supercharger :fact :lol

Have a great Christmas too, best wishes to you and the family :thumbup

I've gotten to see this thing in person (well before the BST's) and it is one of those bikes that you see something cool, then you see something else, then you look again and there is something else you missed the first 7 times you looked at it.

Very cool bike. Now, go on vacation or something so I can steal the BST's. I think PJ said I had to split them with him though.

Realized I had been neglecting this thread and not updating so...... (excuse the pics, some are cell phone as my camera is being a little awkward at times :rant)

When I fitted the dash there was a programming/lap timer switch which had to be fitted on a little bracket on the bars. You can see it here...

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/Dashfitpics053a.jpg

Well I wasn't too keen on it and wanted something a little more factory fit.
So I got hold of another left side switch cluster (just in case :lol) and installed a small momentary switch to do the job instead.
Of course color was important.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/PRM008.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/PRM024.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/PRM022.jpg

Much neater and easily mistaken for the much sought after PRM button.

Next came the update to the brakes.
I had been sitting on some quick disconnects waiting to find somewhere to get lines made up to suit. Well when Mani (slowboyracing) did his Fren Tubo group buy I asked him to check into getting some custom lines made up.
Well he came through and I got the required AN3 fittings but on and was able to fit the disconnects and get them fitted up finally.
Really like these things, have already taken the wheel off the bike and to be able to just take the caliper off and set it aside is really nice, that and it will make cleaning and maintenance so much easier.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/R1%20resized/008-2.jpg

Also recently managed to get hold of a couple of little carbon trim pieces that I didn't have till now.
Got them from Carbonar1, so I now have a couple of bits from another one of my inspirational bikes, thanks Ben.

Got round to solving another couple of little peeves I had.
First was that the rear brake would fall off every time I removed the wheel and was a pain to get back on.
Managed to make that captive :)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/Redgecko59/Captivebrake004.jpg

Makes it way easier to put the wheel back in, almost holds it in place for you and certainly helps line it up for the axle to go in.

While I was there I managed to route the brake line a little better, not such tight bends on it now which always bugged me a bit.

Hey red, could you tell us where you got the captive spacers from? that's a neat lil useful mod.

Didn't buy any captive spacers just drilled a couple of small holes through the adjuster into the caliper bracket and used tension pins to keep them together.
Still allows them to torque down nicely together, as they are free to move on the pins put keeps the caliper nicely in place. :thumbup

Got any pics of how this was done?

What did you utilise the mode switch for? These are a momentary rocker aren't they?

Here's a couple with one of the holes drilled and the pin in, should give you an idea

The mode switch is used to control the programming and lap timer functions on my dash. It wasn't quite a simple as I had envisioned as the switch is on at rest.

Such a sweet bike. I love all the little mods that you have done to clean up things as well. That brake tip is awesome, I almost smashed my brakes the other day I was soo pissed trying to put my tire back on.

Dai.

Hoping he takes his time, I'm in no absolute rush. That's why I bought the extra swinger so at least now it's nice out I can ride while I wait.

If you know in a day in advance that you are gonna stop in let me know, I'll paypal you money to buy a 12 pack for Ryan and the guys he has working for him.
