: My 2009 R1 Build Thread
drjak 03-29-2012, 05:02 PM Just about got all my parts in so figured I'd start up my build thread.
Here is the bike with only a few mods on it. When this pic was took, just my Evotech front and rear axle sliders on it and spools.
http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz79/doktorjak/R1/2009_R1.jpg
Bike will be converted to the '10 White/Black theme. Was originally planning to convert it to a white '10 LE but the decals would have been a PITA to apply and due to the bike's nature being mostly a twisty machine (with a few track days per year) I'd rather keep it minimal and attract as little attention as possible.
I've been busy the last 19 months getting parts when I had the money to do so. I've waited to do this all at once since I've done it before and taking sh1t on and off, doing one thing at a time, is just too time consuming and I've learned my lesson on a number of different bikes. One note, I bought the Leo system prior to even getting the bike!
On to the mods piled up in my garage.
Brembo HP calipers w/ adapter plates and Brembo pads.

I'm waiting on my OZ Piegas to come from the painters. Since they are anodized, he had to order some special clearcoat adhesive to have them clearcoated. Will be clearcoating all the fairings as well once the red is converted to black.
Not pictured: Zero Gravity Double Bubble and Corsa screens (Have to decide which one I want to run), Brake reservoir covers (socks from here on the forum), Motonation clutch sliders, Tekacarbon Carbon fiber gas tank pieces, Tyga Carbon fiber front fender, hugger, and chain cover, Stem stand for my Valentine One, Corbin seat, OEM rear cowl signed by Valentino Rossi, clearbra'd tank, Speedo DRD, and I'm sure something else I missed.
I'll update the thread once we start taking everything apart and building.

Brutal collection! Best of luck fitting it all!

I commend you for being patient enough to wait to install anything. No way in the world I could have:lol

That is an awesome collection. You're gonna have a blast getting it all put on. Trust me. If you need any help or advice, you know where I'm at and glad I could help out where I have already. :thumbup
R1nStang 03-30-2012, 06:14 AM damn thats a lot of parts laying around...dont know how you contained yourself. I would have been installing at least a few of them the day they came in.
are you planning on doing a custom dyno? anyway we could convince you to do a dyno pull with stock stacks...and one with the graves stacks. I dont think we ever got anywhere with getting actual numbers from the graves
mrailing 03-30-2012, 06:26 AM Very nice indeed. I did mine as I went because I wanted to see how each mod affected the bikes performance and if any issues came up, I knew what was causing them.
Congrats on the parts list, very tasteful.
Oh10raven 03-30-2012, 06:40 AM Wow, a lot of toys to play with. Have fun.

I would love to do that but it's not something I am going to have time to do. The bike will be built and finished, then off to my dyno guy and my suspension guy to dial everything in. I'll post up the dyno chart when I'm done with mapping but I'm not going to spend the extra $ to do before and after dyno runs with the stacks. I bought the stacks used so I didn't pay the Graves price, thank God almighty.

For the 1000 they want you'd be better sending your heads to KWS. After having my head for 2 months they now have a program for the R1 heads. Even with head work and every bolt on available I gained 2 HP in a very select range and lost elsewhere. The tuner took the back off while my bike was still on the dyno.

Best places to get your motor work done for the R1 is either Graves or EDR Performance. They have the most R&D on the bike.

Yeah, Eric knows his stuff and has done some wicked things to bikes. I wish he had finished his Crossplane build. Was really looking forward to hear his perspective on this motor and what realistic gains can be had.

drjak 05-24-2012, 03:01 PM Decided to go with the white after all???
White wheels are for Gixxers or phags :crash
They are black, anodized. My paint guy had to search hell and high water for a clearcoat product that would adhese (sp?) to them. Has taken forever!

Everything's better black...............well..................except for.......:flush:
drjak 05-24-2012, 06:50 PM Had silver marchesinis on my '51 and I learned that while they looked the biz, all wheels should be black on motorcycles.

100% agree! Way to hard to keep clean any other color. I've painted a few pair myself.
LION R1 05-25-2012, 03:57 PM Touch the wood guys, awesome parts man gooooood luck with them, i've fell in love with the ohlins and the brembo and the graves VS. Pic please.... :)
drjak 05-25-2012, 04:19 PM Rims shipped today so I can get started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Illernoise 05-25-2012, 05:20 PM I second the notion for EDR and Graves
A HUGE presence in the PNW (EDR) and Southeast (Graves) for both of them...it would be tough for me to choose where to send mine if I had that kind of money to spend.
Can't wait to see this build unfold!
LION R1 05-26-2012, 01:32 AM Ya both of them best...i know how do you feel, its hapend to me ones, here is my advice began with the one you can reach first and see what got for you and then go for the ather one also see what he got for you, and then decide wich one the closest to your dream. thats all fox, GOOD LUCK
LION R1 05-26-2012, 01:34 AM Rims shipped today so I can get started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What kind of rims?
drjak 05-26-2012, 02:48 PM What kind of rims?
OZ Piegas. Best weight reduction vs. cost rim for this bike. They are lighter than the 10 spoke Marchesinis and much cheaper. Adam from motowheels had excellent prices on these. Don't know why more folks aren't picking them up. Will post pics of them when they arrive. My paint guy charged me an arm and a leg to clearcoat them due to the special clearcoat he had to buy to go over the anodizing. Pissed at the $ but it's done. Pics to come.
GreenEric 05-26-2012, 05:34 PM Subbed. The parts are...well...amazing. Can't wait to see it finished
drjak 06-04-2012, 06:07 PM Part update: wheels finally arrived today. He's had them for a few months now. Problem was the anodizing. Took him awhile to find a clearcoat product that would work on them. They looks superb. Pic doesn't do them justice.
Oz Piegas w/added clearcoat.

drjak 08-27-2012, 10:23 PM Interview tomorrow for my dream job. If I can land it (help me Lord) this build will start immediately. I'll have weekends off for the first time this year and no regular night work. I've averaged one day/night off from work a week this year and I've only taken one day off additional this entire year, even worked all the holidays. I'm exhausted and badly wanting to get this started and finished so I can get some riding in.
I've got some additional parts to post as well.

:) <---- This indicates the outcome. Got all the checks to get through but it looks like I'll be getting to finally break this bitch down to the frame and engine in 9 days, or at least start. More than I can say for this year. Outside of my normal 1 day a week off I took off 2 days this entire year. I've worked every holiday so far this year and definitely won't be working next one :D .
A few more pics. Vale hooked me up this year.

Mail in. I've got a PCV and Autotune so I don't need the interface for fueling. $200 I save will pay for a lot of postage if I need to reflash. After you pay for the first one the rest are free :)

Have you thought about having AF1 doing their reflash for you? I talked to Micah a few months ago when I still had my OEM ECU. They have done a ton of R&D and dyno time with their flash. They are building in the custom map when they tune. The results are amazing. Their map eliminates the need for a fuel module. They tested just their flash only against the flash with a PCV and a Bazzaz. There was a 1 hp difference with the Bazzaz, no difference with the PCV.
drjak 10-10-2012, 09:44 AM I thought about it Steve at length. I want the auto tune because I take trips out of state where I'm riding at different elevations. I definitely want to use it. I might still get some dyno time in to make a fuel efficient map (have the swig h setup from dj for multiple maps for the PCV).
drjak 10-12-2012, 08:15 AM Cleverwolf hugger shipping from JP today.
Bit the bullet and ordered pro bolts (ss) for the rotors. I hate torx bolts!

Will have to do some development riding to get optimal setting for the link. Don't think anyone has posted up any data on it yet.

Of course it is. Why would Mr. Sato make an "adjustable link" that doesn't adjust? They were using it in World Superbike so I know it works. + I've owned much Sato stuff before, Mr. Satosan does not play. Wish he was still making exhausts. I'd have one instead of the Leo Vince system.
AKDMA 10-30-2012, 11:38 AM Graves also recommends them. Must be something to them.
Lucar 10-30-2012, 02:19 PM so what made you decide to go with the leo's instead of akras or others?
desire68 10-30-2012, 05:25 PM Agreed, I love the Sato product and if he was still doing the exhaust systems i'd be the first in line. For now, i have his rear sets(for the 2nd time) and his frame sliders are on the list!

drjak 11-16-2012, 01:30 PM Almost 2 weeks since an update. I'm held up by my paint guy. He does all the Lambo/Ferrari work in the area as well as regular cars and has been busy as shit so he's been unable to get to my clearcoat work. Will be switching paint guys to somebody a friend recommended. Need at least the rear cowl cleared so we can mount the exhaust system up. More updates in a week or so.
Doing my best to resist the urge of going to the '12 upper and going full anniversary scheme.
AKDMA 11-16-2012, 03:09 PM I think the older upper looks better. The '12 looks nice, but it doesn't make sense there aren't LEDs in the area under the projectors.

drjak 12-25-2012, 02:18 PM Why did you went for a evo 2 system and not a ti corsa system or a akrapovic evolution kit exhaust?
Didn't know I had to answer fvcking questions on my parts :lol
The EVO system has DB inserts, outstanding for riding through the twisties at decent speed. When you go to the track remove them. Across the range they cost you only 1 HP. My twisties, the quieter the better due to LEO presence in the area. The Corsa doesn't have these and I'm not a fan of Akrapovic.

As long as it hasn't been 6 months since you've started it the Shorai should work fine without their charger. I bought one of them when I got the Shorais (Got one for my Zuma 125 also, which is notorious for draining the battery after a few days without riding) but haven't needed the charger. The Zuma has sat for weeks at a time and fires up stronger than with a new OEM battery.
drjak 12-28-2012, 01:49 PM Looking great mate. Can I ask if the fairings are oem or are they a aftermarket kit? The gloss white really 'pops'
OEM. I had them clearcoated, do this to all my OEM bodywork over the years. The gloss or "shine" of them is an afterthought. I do it to protect the paint. Bug guts can sit on it for a few days with no ill effect. With the OEM stuff there is very little clearcoat on them so as soon as I get back from a ride I have to clean. Got tired of that shit.
If you can pull all your bodywork off (the upper and rear cowl are the PITA's) and take them to a painter for clearcoat it's not that expensive. Much cheaper than a paint job.

No you said a part that clearly works, doesn't, then you accused a sig of being a sticker. Yeah, his mom gave it to me :lol
If you knew what you were you talking about you wouldn't get any flack. :lol
greenstreak9205 12-31-2012, 04:04 PM Like I said...I asked a question :shake
I honestly don't kno much about the sato link, but is it long enough to raise the rear at all? I thought I've heard that it doesn't extend as far or any further than the stocker :dunno
:lol I just didn't kno the RANGE of adjustability
I also never said it was in fact a sticker. Just that it looked like one. There looks like there's a lip around the the sig. That's why I ASKED ;)
Previous statement stands that's you're a dick and I'm lazy :lol

Well lets teach you something today Mr. Lazy.
First of all why would someone make an adjustable suspension link that doesn't adjust any more than the OEM link? Do you realize how stupid that sounds?
"I hear x" isn't an excuse for stupidity.
Next, if you actually looked at the Sig you could see where the sharpie gets weak. Stickers or decals of Sigs are absolutely perfect because they are printed.
Next when you clearcoat something it has to be sanded down. Sanding down that seat cowl would have removed the Sig so the painter put clear bra over it, hand cut it, then cleared over it to preserve it.
In both cases you made stupid assumptions. There is a difference but I know you won't understand that :crash
That concludes our lesson today. Now run along to someone else's thread with your poor assumptions and misinformation.
z064life 12-31-2012, 04:37 PM I've got some fuel...I've also heard the sato rear link didn't LIFT the rear..only lowered it.

You don't necessarily "have to" sand clear coat. If you spend the money and use the correct pressures it should lay smooth enough. Though the guns are $1,000 and the gun cleaners are over $3k

Thanks Steve. Went round and round on paint and in the end went the route that you and Chris did, K.I.S.S.
I will on the performance. Planning on thousands of miles this year once it warms up. Gonna ride it for the first time on Saturday.
drjak 01-06-2013, 07:37 PM Shakedown run today. Rear is too stiff, will have to send the TTX to Ohlins to get a softer spring. Was fun to test. Also debadged the cans. One of the decals was peeling up so I pulled both of them off.

Rizoma rear sets are butter smooth, click, click, click.
Rear brake takes some effort to lock because of the lightweight rotor.
All on/off throttle transition bs is gone with the flash, real nice change. (Thanks AKDMA).
The gearing change makes a nice change from stock. Would like to go more aggressive on the gearing but cruise speed is already 6-7k rpm's so probably leave it where it is at, 15/43.
Midrange is vastly improved with the full system and flash. A mode was crisp and this fvcker is fast as shit but still need to map it some more. Autotune is working but I want it on the dyno. My dyno guy is slammed due to lack of staff. Wants me to leave the bike for a few days but I won't do that so I must wait.
Front Brembos are monsters dude. I can lock the front brake up at will. Strongest brakes of anything I've owned thus far, phenomenal.
Got the rear down to about 2/3 inch of chicken on the rear. Was riding in high 40 degree range on fresh tires and brakes so I didn't want to push my luck too far today. The Diablo Rosso II's were perfect though, excellent grip, excellent feedback, real happy with the tires.
To do list:
Map it
'12 top triple clamp (don't like the removed screws on mine) or Vortex
1 spring lighter on the rear (think we are at 25mm of rear sag and need to be at 30)
Move levers some
When this is done she'll be set and I'll submit for BOTM with mods.
Next year maybe '12 upper/headlight conversion and Rizoma mirrors

Got my TTX back from Ohlins with the ligher spring and Kory was able to finally get 30mm sag in the rear.
Waiting on a new fuel pump from Yamaha. When I did my test ride the low fuel light indicator came on and the damn thing ran out of gas 2 miles later and it was raining :shake. You can't order the sending unit (for low fuel light) on its' own you have to order a whole new pump but luckily I know a GM at Yam and they cut me a deal on a new one. Will replace that this week and hopefully get on the dyno this weekend and I'll post up a dyno chart for those who are curious to see if the Graves Stacks will push it close to 170 RWHP. Happy this is almost done. Much more of a PITA than my last build and I'm really wanting to move on to building the new bike.

Saw that, and I need to stay away from that thread. With the new bike parked last Saturday in the garage, my fun money needs to halt for a while. Still have to pay for my new fuel pump and dyno session. Then I have to start working on the next project. I see lots of Ramen in my future :(

Thanks. Only things I could see in the future are some aftermarket mirrors for the twisties and perhaps a '12 headlight conversion. Nothing else to do and she has enough of my money and effort in her. She's safety-wired up and ready to be flogged on the dyno to see what she'll do. My goal was 170 RWHP and if I'm close I'll be happy.
