Been meaning to move my build ('http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263989') thread ('http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294260')(s) out of the ROTM sub-forums and into this one, but after I had rashed up the right side mid and lower fairings, I had to wait till I got it back to the painter to move it here.

But here we are! :crash

Yesterday was the 7th annual awareness walk for TAAF, and was the second time I had brought the bike to be displayed. The funny thing was that we lost count of how many people asked if the bike was being raffled. Part of it was cause our tent was next to a raffle tent, so we probably boosted their raffle sales! :lol

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/posingforacause.jpg

This year was the first time our family attempted to raise funds for the annual walk. We set a goal of $350, and our final tally was over 1000% of that at just over $3600!

I wonder how much I can top that amount if I do raffle off my bike. :lol

Things I Never Thought I Would Find in my local Craigslist:
Magical Racing Carbon Fiber Front Fender ;)

It had been awhile since I perused Craigslist like I used to do, so I did earlier today, typing in my usual search keywords yamaha r1 parts. I clicked on any ads that either identified my generation, or just "r1 parts" or something like. One of the ads was titled "02-03 yamaha r1 parts - $100," and when I clicked on it, I had to do a doulbe-take. It was clearly a CF front fender, but I could see a piece of aluminum bracket on the backside of the fender leg, and I thought, "no freakin' way..."

So I pulled up Magical Racing's website, and lo and behold, the whole profile of the fender was a match.

Somebody that was only a 15-minute drive from my door to theirs is selling this for $100?

I made arrangements in no time, went to his house, then gave the whole thing a look-over. It was, obviously, in one piece. No cracks or gouges or any discernible scratches, though there were very tiny dotted blemishes on the clear coat. Suffice it to say, it was in very good condition. I had a feeling that the seller had no idea what make this fender was, and he confirmed it when I asked him. He just said it came with the R1 he bought, which he had already sold. I asked him if he was firm on his price, and he said, "No, you can go lower."

"I'll give you $60 for it."

Done. :hammer:

Sometimes, I actually do feel bad for people who don't know what they're getting rid of.

Mounted the MR front fender last night. Very simple, but I just needed a couple of things to make them work properly with the Ohlins forks.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1064.jpg

I needed four M6 capped allen head bolts (local Home Depot), and I needed to use some spacers between the fender adapter and the fork bracket to mount the adapter perpendicular. No biggie. But then, after mounting it, something didn't quite sit right with me.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1067.jpg

I always knew that the MR fender would be larger compared to OEM. MR looks to have molded it to be more streamlined than the OEM, doing away with a lot of the corners in the OEM fenders, as well as the wells for the bolts. That said, while I thought that that was what was bothering me, it turned out to be something else.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1066.jpg

I realized that the CF was slightly faded, probably from having sat under the sun too much with the previous owner(s). It's not too bad, but when you look at it against the rest of my CF or black trims on the bike, it's noticeably showing age.

I'm thinking maybe I'll repaint most of the fender in black, save for the pocket sections where it bolts onto the forks.

Maybe.

Or shit, just let the bike show its age. :lol

The fading is in the clear, not the carbon. You can give it a good wet sand and shoot it with another clear coat and it will be good as new. :thumbup

Really? A coworker just recommended trying a polishing element first, cause they also thought it was just the clear.

Interesting, but very encouraging either way!

Meanwhile, I posted an inquiry ('http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=336847') on the leftover Samco hose I have for the AIS and a silicone vacuum line I purchased. If any one of you might have an opinion on it as well, it'd be much appreciated. :thumbup

sinncere
05-11-2012, 03:23 PM
The Samco hoses have set me down a very dark (or red) path.

MUST GET RID OF ALL THE UGLY RUBBER HOSES! :lol

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1200.jpg

So today I tackled about a handful of other hoses I could. Since I found 6-feet of 5mm Silicone vacuum lines to replace the airbox and fuel tank overflow hoses, I also decided to put the Samco air induction system (AIS) hose to use, even though I was without the AIS.

It's just such a shame to not be able to use such a pretty hose, which happens to be the longest of the kit.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1205.jpg

This is basically all that's left of the OEM AIS hose after the whole system was removed. Simply cut and plugged on the airbox.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1204.jpg

So I'm going to cannibalize the Samco AIS hose. Along with replacing the two overflow hoses, I'm going to cut the lengths I need from the Samco AIS hose to make a prettier plugged hose for the airbox's AIS outlet, and also use it to replace the crankcase breather hose.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1203.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1201.jpg

Done...

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1209.jpg

...and done!

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1208.jpg

The 5mm vacuum lines were actually a mil smaller than the OEM hoses. No biggie, just meant they needed a bit more effort to slot in, and they're probably more secure even without the hose clamps.

Gonna have to keep an eye on the crankcase breather hose though; Samco themselves would only tell me that they "cannot" recommend using standard silicone where fuel/oil or fuel/oil vapor is used; that's why they have specific silicone hoses for that with resistant lining. However, if the Samco hose does degrade because of the oil fumes from the crankcase, it might be awhile until it does, and I'll just slip on the OEM rubber hose back.

Next up - RED FUEL LINES :lol! I measured up the fuel line sizes cause I found stores online selling Helix Racing colored fuel lines, so will be giving those a try. :thumbup

The other thing that I've kind of been thinking of is upgrading the radiator.

Before I turned this bike into the TAAF bike, it was first and foremost my rolling homage to racing superbikes; if there was any way I can mimic things unique to superbikes, I would, so long as I wouldn't break the bank.

But one of the things that really set the superbikes apart from the street bikes is their oversized radiators.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/oversized_rad.jpg

That's an AMA Suzuki Superbike up there, but actually, the 2012 Suzuki GSXR1000 in stock form was clever enough to place their oil cooler right under the radiator, making the two cooling systems look like one oversized racing radiator.

For my bike, I suppose I could order one from OPPRacing ('http://www.oppracing.com/category/84-oversized-water-radiator/') that costs well over $2k after everything is said and done and shipped. Or I could try this Romanian guy on eBay that makes and sells "supplementary" radiators for about $350 shipped.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/suppl_rad.jpg

He didn't list anything for the 02-03 or earlier R1, but when I saw his photo for the 04-06 gen, the piping and mount looks like it's spot-on for the 02-03 anyway. So I emailed him and got the exact dimensions of the supplementary radiator, so I can mock it up on my bike where the chin fairing was, and see if there would be any clearance issues.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1096.jpg

He gave me the measurements, so I cut it up in carboard to mock up.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1097.jpg

Clearance-wise, I think it should work. Where I placed the cardboard mock-up is where I would ideally like it to sit, but I think that with the width of the supplementary radiator and where the top mount is, it might sit further back inside. I'd also need to cut the fairing tab where the chin fairing bolts onto (inside of left fairing).

Then again, when I realized that the cost of a brand-new OEM radiator for my bike is about the same as this supplementary radiator, it makes me have second thoughts.

So while I let this simmer, I decided to do something with my Cox Racing radiator guard.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1098.jpg

It being blue was fine when my bike was still blue :lol. But then I think that to help get that racing radiator look, I wish it was just in simple aluminum finish or silver instead. Cox Racing does sell them in silver (or titanium) finish, but I didn't want to chock this one out when it's still perfectly whole, just because of the color.

So I decided to try and remove the anodize from it, with a little help from a can of oven cleaner.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1202.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1207.jpg

Did it work? Yes it did, but Cox wasn't kidding when they said these were hard anodized, cause it took me a handful of passes to get most of the blue anodize out. I ran out of can before I could remove all of it :lol! Plus, the actual screen itself was tricky to rub the anodize off, unless I wanted to take a toothbrush to them individually.

Fvck that. I'll just whip out the credit card and order a new one from Cox Racing in silver! :lol

Besides, this has served me well in the years I've had it anyway. Check out the welts!

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1090.jpg

Whatever made those welts on the screen, can you imagine what they would've done to the radiator itself?

A much better investment at $90 instead of an oversized or supplementary radiator, me thinks. :thumbup

Got some things planned for my brakes after this Monday's trackday, which is looking like a wash given how the forecast at this point is calling for hours of rain. Hopefully Thunderhill's own micro-climate prevails and gives us some dry time. It's an open trackday anyway, so we should be able to maximize any dry time.

It would be a real shame if the whole day turns out to be a wash though, as this could effectively be the last trackday I can sneak in before my wife gives birth to our first child next month, so pray for some dry track time for us, fellas!

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1146.jpg

Anyway, one way or another after this trackday I'm gonna gear up on the brakes (again), but this time, front and back. It's the rear brake that would mostly be a project anyway.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1153.jpg

Buddy of mine thought to get me a two-piston rear caliper from an '03 Ducati 999. Obviously, with the difference in the caliper piston layout, the caliper bolt offsets prevent this from being plug and play. The OEM R1 caliper offset is about 96mm, while the 999 caliper offset is about 83-84mm if I remember correctly from measuring it.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1148.jpg

So I bought a spare OEM caliper bracket for an 02-03 R1, and I'll be using this to measure everything, but using the 999 caliper bolt offset to machine a custom bracket to hold the 999 caliper for my bike.

Last year I did take the time to learn MasterCAM a bit, but then the rest of my life got in the way and now I forgot everything. On top of that, my buddy the machinist said to forget about MasterCAM; it's all about FeatureCAM nowadays, so I'm gearing up to re-learn CAD, and I'm hoping to make this custom rear caliper bracket the first thing I machine out.

If I can't or get sidetracked again, I'll just pass it along to my friend so he can do this thing a lot quicker :lol. Besides, I finally found an 02-03 lower triple clamp to hand over to Trung, so he can machine me a matching (and beefier) billet lower triple to match with the billet upper triple he did for me. :thumbup

On the front end of the brakes, I finally scored a pair of 320mm plug-and-play Brembo HP front rotors for my bike. With the 10mm PVM spacers I've had laying around, I can finally use them with my calipers to work with these rotors, no longer leaving me with a mil or two of unused pad OVER my current 298mm rotors. Will also be interesting to see how much the extra leverage on the rotors will translate to stopping power.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1207-1.jpg

So I've been running the set of 320mm Brembo HP rotors for about three weeks now, and I can finally say that after the billet calipers, different brake pads, and racing brake fluid, that it was the rotors that I've been missing all along. Before these rotors, I always felt like there was something that wasn't allowing me to use my braking system to its best, and so I was trying different combinations of pads, bleeding the system to make sure there was no trapped air, etc. With the HP rotors, my brakes have been the best they've ever been, and I finally feel like every component is being used to their fullest potential.

In fact, I like these HP rotors so much, that when another pair had popped up online for a wickedly good price, I snatched them for my track wheels! :lol I cannot wait to try them on the track considering how fantastic they've been on the streets!

And speaking of brakes - I've only recently installed FeatureCAM, and with paternity leave looming for me, I'm getting geared up to learn CAD again, especially to try and machine my own billet rear caliper bracket for the Ducati 999 rear caliper I got.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1200-1.jpg

However, earlier this week though, I remembered that the first-gen R1's actually used a two-piston rear caliper like the 999 (unlike the 4-piston that my bike uses), and is actually underslung as OEM. So off I went to eBay and snatched up a used 1st-gen R1 bracket to see if the bolt offsets would be the same as the Ducati caliper.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1201-1.jpg

Well, it was very close, but no cigar. Furthermore, while the 1st-gen bracket would slot into my swingarm, the axle slot on the 1st-gen bracket is clearly wider than my OEM bracket.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/Photo1204-1.jpg

Oh well. To the drawing board it is as originally planned.

Oh! And speaking of drawing board...

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/lowertriple.jpg

My friend the machinist sent that CAD file of a beefier lower triple for my bike (note the third pinch bolt). I was finally able to hand him a spare OEM triple for my bike for him to measure. Not bad looking for a first try, with no aesthetic consultation from me yet :lol. So at this point, just need to discuss a couple of things I think were missing in the design that are necessary, and then I'll see if I need to add anything else to make it look even better. Off-hand, I'm thinking I actually want the pinch bolts more perpendicular from the center of the clamp, rather than parallel like OEM.

Like with the billet upper triple he made me, my friend Trung and I were emailing back and forth several times earlier today about the design of the matching lower triple.

Topside:
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/ScreenHunter_03Jun280905.jpg
Underside:
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/ScreenHunter_04Jun280906.jpg

Trung took the liberty of incorporating pockets on top and underneath the triple, and then added even more flourishes; I've noticed that homeboy can get carried away when he starts something unless you keep him in check. :lol

So I had him leave the upper face alone, while leaving the pockets underneath. I also asked him to machine his company name right on the front face of the triple.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/ScreenHunter_05Jun281054.jpg

We were having a bit of a communication breakdown about where the "front face" was...:lol

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/ScreenHunter_06Jun281342.jpg

We eventually understood each other, and so the text just needed a bit more editing till it was good. :thumbup

The last bit I had asked him to change was to rotate the pinch bolts closer to the clamp body, just cause I thought this would look more trick. After all that, here's more or less the final design:

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/view1.jpg

For ease of machining, we left the bump stops off the triple, and will instead machine those separately to be bolted on.

Fook me, it looks yummy! :boobies

Been pretty quiet here since my daughter was born six weeks ago, but can't complain. Been having a lot of fun being a new dad, and I'm still lucky enough to be able to ride like I did before she was born. I have a wonderful wife like that. :thumbup

So I haven't really done any major purchases for the bike. Save for finally getting around to replacing the rear brake reservoir hose to Tygon like I did the front and trying out new grips, not much has changed as evident in these updated photos.

Brembo 320mm HP full-floating rotors have been mounted since the last photos I took, as well as the Magical Racing CF front fender

Earlier this week though, I did have to buy another set of OEM wheels from eBay after denting both of my previous OEM set during my last trackday at Infineon. An isolated incident coming out of Turn 1 caused the damage, but fortunately, I was able to ride out that airless rear tire, and push the bike off to safety.

Yeah, wasn't pretty.

S'alright. Perks of owning a Super Dinosaur is that replacement parts are aplenty, and dirt cheap. :crash

So earlier this month was supposed to be a really epic week; I had an open trackday at Thunderhill Raceway on the 2nd, and two days in Laguna Seca that weekend on the 6th and 7th. Before the week even started, I had cut my pinky open with a tuna can lid, and slightly injured my right metatarsal about 48 hours prior to Thunderhill. It wasn't boding well, but nevertheless, I wasn't fazed. I was only planning run Thunderhill two days ago to warm me up for Laguna Seca this weekend. Instead...

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/ddumapias/TAAF%20R1/punished.jpg

Well, it warmed me up alright. Or more accurately, banged me up. Now all things considered, I was pretty lucky yet again. While the bike was cosmetically damaged and bent the frame slider, fairing stay, and left footpeg, the whole bike was still structurally whole and was rideable. The incident happened within four laps of my first outing of the day, and after taking a break to make sure my headache from hitting my head on the ground wasn't going to get any worse, I was able to ride the rest of the day with my friends, albeit with a slightly marred bike.

Video post-crash, giving my friend a tow to show some slightly faster lines for him:
0lAGsU9duQg

Ironic that I was just going to warm up for two days in Laguna, and now I'm feeling banged up two days before the two days I'm about to do in Laguna.

Oh, and the crash?

I basically was coming upon a much slower rider, which was not a big deal. I could tell out of Turns 4 and into 5 that this rider either had never done Thunderhill before, or this is one of the first few times they had gone there. Going into Turn 5 of Thunderhill, I've passed many a slow riders out of it and into the transition to 5A by swinging to their outside and giving them room. That was my plan as usual, but the rider ahead of me had other plans as he described to me post-collision; he said that going into and through Turn 5 he "saw (my) shadow" coming up on him fast, so he decided to swing wide out of Turn 5 to give me room to pass him on the inside into 5A. In doing that, he basically swung into my planned trajectory to safely pass him. Long story short, his rear wheel and my front wheel cross, and as has been proven time and time before - in a battle of rear wheels and front wheels on a motorcycle, the rear wheels always win.

I ran into the back of the other rider BECAUSE he was trying to get out of my way.

Like I said - ironic.

No harm no foul though, especially with the other rider managing to keep it upright. We shook hands post-crash and he took an advice I dearly wanted him to have. Nearly four years since my last track incident, and my no-crash streak at Thunderhill has now been broken.

P.S.
For posterity's sake, please take note of this same advice I gave the rider I collided with:
Do not ever worry about what's going on behind you. Maintain your line and pace, and those behind you will find a way to safely pass you.

That is all.

P.P.S.
Apart from the upper track fairing looking like it was bit by jaws, the only other major damage on the bike other than the left slider being bent was the fairing stay practically collapsed in four places. Was able to source out an aftermarket replacement unit though, well before the Laguna Seca weekend!

What do you do when you fall off your horse?

You get back on it and wring the shit out of it!
:lol

Despite the crash three days prior, I made it to Laguna Seca courtesy of Yamaha and their 2nd annual owner appreciation trackdays. Price may have gone up (relatively speaking) from $75/day last year to $100/day this year for older model Yamahas, but with a 105db noise limit (Sonoma Raceway is 103db) and gorgeous freaking weather for both days, it was still a crazy deal!. Plus, I finally got to put some fresh track rubber on my track wheels after three years since I last did. I'd forgotten how fantastic fresh rubber makes you feel!

Awesomeness ensued. :crash

* We held the dyno day to benefit Rob's sixteen year old sponsored rider named Anthony Alonso, as he was tapped to do a replacement stint in British Superbike's MotoStar Cup support series for the last two rounds, as well as to try out for this year's Red Bull MotoGP Rookie Cup. The young man has since come back earning a podium in his first race in BSB as well as their hard-charging ride award, and yes, he was selected (http://superbikeplanet.com/2012/Oct/121011p.htm) in the Red Bull Rookie Cup!

I forgot to update this thread when I first tried to fit the billet lower triple, which was quite a fiasco. :crash

My buddy the machinist forgot to update his CAD file BEFORE he machined the triple; problem was that before I gave him a spare OEM lower triple to measure, I brought an Attack lower triple for his reference. I guess he measured the specs of the Attack triple, including the offset, which had an insert of 6mm difference from OEM. Lo and behold, I try and fit the forks through, and I couldn't get the second leg through since it didn't line up with the upper triple. I had to laugh it off even though I spent all that time taking off my front-end, but my buddy was so mad at himself, in less than 48 hours, he already machined me another one with the right offsets! :lol

Now all is right with the world. :thumbup

I could've taken better photos, but in the interest of saving time I opted to leave the bodywork and headlights in the bike. No fitment or steering issues, and no funky feeling on the bike when I first rode it since putting it on, though it has been a couple of months since I last rode, so a proper assessment is still coming.

Looks really fvcking wicked though...
