You got to get one of those $2 cable lubers...available at most bike shops; you remove the cable from the handle, insert it in the tool, tighten the knob to seal things up then insert your WD40 spray straw into the hole and quckly and slowly spray in till the juice flows at the other end...use a rag there to collect the black goo...then moves the cable by hand up and down (not absolutely required)

Remove the appropriate lower fairing... Slacken the lock-nut securing the the cable in the bracket on the engine and slip the cable out of the bracket... Bend out the tab in the cable retainer on the end of the release mechanism arm... Slip the cable end out of the retainer noting how it fits ... Screw the adjuster at the handle bar end of the cable fully into the lever bracket, then turn it out to align the slot in the adjuster with that in the lever bracket... Pull the outer cable end from the socket in the adjuster and release the inner cable from the lever... Remove the cable from the machine noting the routing and any guides or clips... Good luck :hellobye

Really, the steel cable is shrink-wrapped in a plastic housing, which runs through the steel coiled firstlayer which is covered by a thick rubber coating doubled at friction points. Lubing that cable is not a big thing...maybe once a year.
