drinktoo 04-01-2003, 01:43 PM Goes really well with the how to on running lights !!! IF YOU DO NOT FEEL COMFY CUTTING YOUR STOCK PARTS WITH DREMELLS AND RAZORS DON'T EVEN READ THIS!!!!!!!!!Alright this is the first time I've done this "how to" so be gental on me... Also I'm just trying to help 02' & 03' R1 owners out(I don't see why it wouldn't work on other bikes). Here is how it unfolded.
1. First off you'll need lots of BEER, your factory blinkers(yeah the big light houses that stick off the side of a stock bike,) and a set of amber marker leds(that you could probably pick up from a truck stop, your local bike shop, or North Alabama fire equipment co. mine = $13.49 each) you'll also need a dremel tool, a hot-glue-gun(or silicon,) a scribe or pointed metal object for drawing lines in plastic, a sharp arse razor blade cutter(for thick rubber,) tool pouch, sand paper, solderless connectors, and a sharpie.
2. Take off your side fairings and remove the blinkers from them.... set the blinkers to the side for a while. Take your marker light and hold it up to the hole in the side fairing so you can make certain that the light will shine through(from the back side) Then take the marker light and using the dremell tool, and a cutting wheel, cut the lens off the marker BE CAREFULL NOT TO CUT THE BOARD THAT THE ACTUAL LEDS ARE MOUNTED TO... It will look a little ruff but you will cover it up completely.
3. Next you will take your stock blinkers and cut the wires leading to the plug(leaving enough wire to hook to the marker light.) Take the marker light that has only 2 wires and find the right combination to match up to your bike that has 3 wires. The ground wire will not be used. Once you have found the combination (I used solder and a soldering iron but you can use solderless connectors a lot easier and they work just as well.) Splice the wires to the plug then hook up your plug check to see if its going to work again. Next what I did was take the gromet(little piece of rubber that actually held the stock blinker, that I refer to in the next post , in the fairing) and cut it off so that I had about 1/4 inch of the rubber sticking out of the fairing this is what you will clean up and use to mount the new flushmount(and also prevents having to modify the fairing.). I also cut the tabs off the back side of the rubber piece so I had a nice flat place to glue my marker light to. Don't slip on that because unless you plan on cutting your rear blinkers up or something you only have 1 try on it. I have posted a crappy picture of my stock blinker to show you where I cut, you may want to cut in a different place. Once you have your blinker off you can compair it to mine and see where I cut the rubber peice off too.
4. I'm going to say this again Don't slip on this because unless you plan on cutting your rear blinkers up or something you only have 1 try on it. Take the rubber piece you just cut and use it to scribe a mark in the lens portion of your sock blinkers. You can tailor it as you see fit but I opted to keep mine a little larger to hide imperfections I had.
5. Your about done now. I installed the rubber grommet that I cut off my stock blinker into the fairing then I glued or siliconed the marker light to the back side of the rubber. and I took the piece that I cut outta the stock lens and cleaned it up with sandpaper(dremel melts plastic) around the edges(and if you want to you can use a sharpie marker to color the edge you just cleaned up) Then being very carefull again I glued(or silicon) the lens to the outside of the rubber grommet. Hook up your plug, and check to see if its going to work again. Then attach your fairings back and enjoy your flushmounts!!!
drinktoo 04-01-2003, 01:45 PM Other one I'll prolly get some really close pictures tonight and post em up. If you match your stock blinker to the one here you can see the piece of rubber I cut off.
Corny 04-01-2003, 01:47 PM Nice how-to. I saved the time and got greggs :)
drinktoo 04-01-2003, 01:54 PM OH YEAH DON'T LAUGH AT MY DEEP FREEZE IT KEEPS BEER ICE COLD:beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer
drinktoo 04-01-2003, 01:55 PM I would have but Im to poor.:(
drinktoo 04-07-2003, 09:15 PM To put this mod with its counterpart, plus I tried to fix the confusing part about the rubber piece(grommet) Any questions please post I'll try to help. I am not trying to earn money or anything so please don't try to get me to do this for you I can't. I just don't have the time.
drinktoo 04-09-2003, 08:32 PM I went back and used my other set of factory blinkers and reworked it to where it was a true flushmount that was flush with the fairing9instead of inset) and added a $5 four led superbright from Auto Zone(brighter than in the original post) Hope this helps. If you guys do this mod please post it so I can see if I can get better ideas;)

Ronin R1 04-22-2003, 01:38 AM I did it too!
Ronin R1 04-22-2003, 01:40 AM I used a rediculously bright 11 LED cluster. This is during the day...
opurbopan 04-25-2003, 01:20 AM Anyone got any pics of making these sorts of flushmounts in the rear? I'm gonna give it a whirl this weekend, so any experience would help. If not, I'll take some pics to post next week or whenever I get it done. The weather's supposed to be really ****ty all weekend, so chances are I'll have it done by next week
opurbopan 04-25-2003, 02:50 PM Another question: I went to find LEDs and they're arranged on a fat board. Did y'all use any particular diode setup that would work best?
drinktoo 04-26-2003, 01:01 AM RONIN :2bitchsla your not supposed to make em better than mine:lol Those ****ers rock. I too have been working on mine. I like the idea of 11 led cluster might have to try that with a (ahem) clear lens from Auto Zone(normally used for some kind of interior light:confused: ) Oh and Opurbopan I found leds in a number of places that didnt come pre mounted to a board(really compact) One I found at Auto Zone four cluster mounts like your standard running light(hint hint) another same type but inclosed in a nice little black housing I found at the local suzi dealer($$$) :no Yet another I found at a place that caters to cops and firefighters($$$):no I don't work for any of these places but I do like to find the right price on things so far tree of my friends have done my mod and they all look better than mine, so that means I have to do better. You guys keep up the good work and help me with ideas(cause my friends around here don't know about this site:finger ) I got to keep one up right?
opurbopan 04-26-2003, 04:26 PM Thanks, Drinktoo. I think I'll just screw around with some LEDs from radio shack and see what works. None of the auto stores around here have any pre-mounted clusters except for big rigs, so I'm SOL there. I'll post what I have when I'm finished
LooneyR1 04-26-2003, 04:30 PM Drinktoo,
:hellobye
Good post....!
Im poor too sooooo I thought this was a very good post.. do you think it will work with mine? '99
I thought the best part was the first line 'lots of beer'

take care bud!
Mackz 04-26-2003, 04:39 PM Too cool! :rock
Kid Loops 04-26-2003, 05:10 PM i wish i could do that :(
drinktoo 04-26-2003, 05:14 PM Most certainly it will work for the 99'. It should work with any bike that has blinkers from the factory. Cutting the lens to fit is the only hard part and if you dont get it right I have found that they sell a certain dome light at Autozone for about $6 thats clear and if your using amber LEDs they look SAWEET I'll post some pics when Im done updating mine:rock
drinktoo 04-26-2003, 05:16 PM BTW opurbopan send me a B'day card with $10 in it and I'll send you the LEDs you need from the local Auto Zone:lol
Pm me with an Addy and I'll do the same. BTW My B'day is in May:beer

trick 09-04-2003, 08:35 PM drinktoo, this is one of the coolest truly custom mods i've seen. now i'm pissed cuz i just purchased the graphicartmotodesign flush mounts about a month ago. and the real reason i bought them was to match the rear undertail. cool mod, very cool!
Disco_Monkey 12-24-2003, 02:56 AM this is pretty late but... i just did a search to see if anyone has done this and i guess YOU have. man i gotta give you PROPZ! i was thinkin bout doin that to my ugly LP flushmount IIIs using the clear lense but i didn't think bout using the stock blinker stalk. i actually think your way looks WAY sicker than greggs. :thumbup
i know what imma do this weekend! :yesnod

I bought a pair of LP flusmounts. They were the smallest ones about 1.5" long and 1" tall. Then I sanded them down with one those round sanders you hook up to your drill, and shaped them a bit to fit in the hole.
I bought 6 LED bulbs from www.superbrightleds.com and I'll be fitting those in them tomorrow. I put some in my brake lights 2:

Thanks man!!!!! this is a great post and my next mod
wasted 01-05-2004, 03:02 PM Hi:hellobye
this is getting to be a pretty healty thread now to the point that it is getting hard to follow from when Drink too started it:bow
I originally modded my indicators shortly after this thread started and all was well apart from my hazard warning lights not wanting to play and the speed of the flashers being not quite correct:rant
I have now wintered my bike and set to putting it right using what I had left from my original indicators after the initial mod. I began by removing what was left off the amber lense of the reflector and smoothed it down until I could fix it to the fairing using some resin. Now I use all of the original kit ie. back of the light and screw fixing and bulb so all is easily accessible and secure so I dont have to get out the soldering iron to change the bulb and the likes and all the flashers including the hazards are at the correct speed. The other bonus is that because I am using the reflectors none of the light is lost and they are the brightest I have had them. I'll post the pics below with a bit of luck:yesnod

LiquidR1 01-05-2004, 03:41 PM Kenshin,
A few guys on the forum did the same thing. I used plain blinker bulbs. If you super glue a peice of sheet metal to the inside of the clear lense. It will isolate the blinkers from the brake lights, thus eliminating the blending of light your having. It looks alot brighter that way. You should try it.

Ultraviolet 02-22-2004, 12:50 PM Just some questions from a in UK.... I think were not as enthusiastic over here with mods, inspiration or resourcefulness!!!!
The LED"s.... do they affect the hazzards and the blink rate of the indicators???
Secondly, using the standard induicators and bulbs......what are you fixing the bulb holder to the inside of the fairing with??? Silicone?
Can the standard bulbs be used in the rear light?
Many thanks for your direction
E.Rob 04-03-2004, 09:39 AM NICE TRAILOR.

Hi UV,
I cant comment on the led's and the flash rate for the hazards but I have done my front and rear indicators using just bulbs and they flash ok. The rear has two smaller than normal and the front the originals superglued to the rear of the farings. I use to have different to standard and it done my head in when it wouldn't flash right!
