I am one of the few who likes the look and sound of the stock can. I really dont want my bike to be any louder. I do want to be able to hang with these 03 gixxer 1k's in the straights. Can i expect any gains from a PC3, maybe a ram air box, and whattever else without changing the exhaust? is it even worth adding these things without a pipe? what can i get out of this bike with the stock exhaust and has anyone else done this? thanks michael

here is my suggestion....go with a micron slip on exhaust.....it has a beautiful tone....it is a deep sound and is hardly as loud as stock....you will NOT be disappointed...you will gain about 5-6hp.....the exup valve REALLy restricts the exhaust flow and the SOUND....so as long as you do not go with a full system it will be not be that loud......not to mention it will look much better.. I would go with a slip on exhaust (micron, hindle, akropovic or devil) and a boxR airbox, graves velocity stacks, slide stops, pc3 with a good map...you would be pushing around 150 hp For a little more you could go with a 520 conversion kit and add a couple teeth to the back for alot of take off or take away a couple on the rear for more top end...the 520 will cut about 2-3 lbs of spinning mass..

This the best way I can put it.... You can take the world's fastest athlete.... Put a bag over his face and I guarantee I'll beat him in a mile run. Best scenario, in order to increas performance, free flowing exhaust is a must! You can do all you want to increase the air flow into the engine (ie. ram air, Jet kit), but it won't do any good if the exhaust can't escape at a higher rate. If you like the stock look, keep it stock, I agree that the stock look and sound is great! Then again, I'm scared of my R1 now....

thanks for the reply, the exhaust is definately not an option. i just like the stealth stock exhaust. will theses mods be worth anything with the stock exhaust? michael

You'll need alot to run with an 03 gixxer  I had a Yosh Tri-oval Zylone slip-on in Stainless Steal and it was no louder than stock at idle. After 5k or so when the Exup opens it got louder but not that loud. Today I just got a Yosh Tri-oval Race can in Carbon fiber and all I can say is WOW!!! It sounds deeper and meaner off idle and until 5k or so but it almost sounds quieter up top:confused: I know carbon Fiber cans are deeper but what a difference. I think the CF deadens the sound somewhat. With the S.S. can and the two stage baffles it got tinny sounding up high( Yosh:confused: ) I too liked the stock can and sound the first year I had my bike(last year) I put 7000 miles on it that way with a pcIII , Velocity Stacks and 1 tooth up in the rear. It was quicker than stock but I don't think it would run with a 01-02 Gixxer 1000 unless their heavier than you( I'm 165lbs) but a 03 Gixxer damn Good Luck and be safe Mike

YOU CAN ONLY EAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN SHIT. Your only option is to take apart your stock muffler and gut it out and get intouch with Suppertrap or some exhaust company that has muffler packing and a pipe that has holes in it. Many exhaust companies sell these parts. Andreas Miko

if you want really quiet go with a stealth baffled Hindle slip on......I heard on of these today and they are quiet as hell....I would not recommend you do alot of performance upgrades and leave the stock can on....It will limit your potential....believe me the exup valve really keeps the R1 quiet even with a "louder can"

I felt the same way for the first year I had mine. I wanted to leave it all stock but then I got a great deal on a used Mig high mount. I put it on expecting the bike to be much lowder but that wasn't the case. It is not loud and obnoxious like you would expect. It just sounds throaty now. It has a great tone and the looks are greatly improved as well. I don't feel a significant increase in power but I like the bike better now. Just my .02 All of these people would not be telling you to do it if they didn't believe you would be happy with the results.

i understand the "only eat what you can shit" theory, trust me, i do. my question was more based around whether or not the bike is restricted by the intake(mouth). if its not, then i need exhaust obviously(bigger butthole). if it is, what will help? air box? can i tune out any lean spots that are there for emmissions purposes with a pc3? (bigger mouth) i had a leo vince titanium pipe on my 01 r6. this pipe was supposed to be one of the quietest. it was far too loud for my taste. thanks guys

Obviously you like the stock pipe, the way it sounds, etc... Your not going to beat any Gixxers without full exhaust, etc.. Why don't you just put like a 25 shot of nitrous on your bike.:yesnod Safe, your bikes still quiet, and you'll be beating Gixxers right and left.;)

...that being the case, I'd pare off weight wherever possible. Take off all reflectors, switch to mini turn signals, lose the passenger pegs, ti exhaust hanger, fender kit, 520 sprocket/chain,etc. but you really should get an Akra slip-on...:yesnod

Leo Vinci is not quiet from what I've heard. Yosh is probably or is the top 3 quietest.

If you think you are going to hang with an 03 GSXR1000 in the straights, you are fooling yourself. I love r1's, have had three of em, but the 2001 GSXR1000 I had for almost two years would absolutly KILL R1's in straightaways. Top speed? Forget it. If you want top performance, you need to sell your R1 and get the Gixxer.... not bashing R1's here (notice I still have an R1 and I sold the GSXR) but we need to be honest here.
