Phoshious 04-12-2003, 11:36 AM Yup...my Dad bought an nVidia GeForce 4 440 MX, 128MB, and it blows the 3 nutted monkey....I mean, most games don't even run. I stand by what I've always said. ATI ownz nVidia. ATI is nVidia's pimp. nVidia is ATI's hoe. :no

There just somthing that I don't like about the ATI product but I always give them a chance

Uhh, are you dictating what I'll buy?
Phoshious 04-12-2003, 11:50 AM Obviously, if I had the money, I'd get an ATI Radeon 9700Pro, not this nVidia BS. Sad excuse for a piece of hardware.
As long as whe are on the subject and I got you comp gurus attention. My comp lags for a split second alot when I play (when something graphic happens, and that mostly the first time it accurs). Can this be fixed with some adjustments? It doesn't matter what the texture or dimension is set to. And yes, its an nVidia......
DrEvil 04-12-2003, 11:53 AM Ati 9500 pro was no better cause the benchmarks were higher? Stop smoking the crack pipe foo!
Ati's cards only have the drawback on the older cards due to driver issues. Ever since the Catalyst trend they have a very high fault tolerance. The 9500Pro is one of the best cards on the market for the home user. I guess not to you cause you dont know the difference.
I think its about time you re-assessed your flagship...Its going down in a ball of flames.

CPU speed? RAM?
DrEvil 04-12-2003, 11:54 AM If its overclocked try bringing the Mhz down a bit. If not, I would suggest tweaking some settings in the Cpl and seeing if that takes care of it. Otherwise, get different drivers. Not necessarly from Nvidia If you catch my drift.

Phoshious 04-12-2003, 12:00 PM Nice. You should get 98Lite. :p
Anyways. I'd suggest what DrEvil and Orgnoi said.
dr.r1 04-12-2003, 12:02 PM ATI rocks! Mostly because they are canadian and they make kickass cards. I have a gf 4 ti 4600 and it kicks ass, but my next buy will be an ATI. The new Nvidia card is out and the 9800 pro, is still kicking ass on it.
Bummer about the card Phos, I heard those cards are SHIT. Basically, it is supposed to be something like a lowend geforce 3 ,or maybe even 2. i think.
For the money, I think a Highend Geforce 3 is the way to go or an 8500 ATI. New cards are way over priced.
I'll try to figure out what all that means and tweak it:p
Ok now I'm on standard value on Mhz istead of 85. But what's Cpl?
Keith 04-12-2003, 12:59 PM Ati 9500 pro was no better cause the benchmarks were higher? Stop smoking the crack pipe foo!
Dude can't you read English.
I said the benchmarks were indeed higher but in game performance was not any better can you really see 190fps vs. 280fps I can't. ATI cards suck in the fact that they take to long to fade in when restarting allot of games also have distractions that the Geforce card doesn't such as the line going across the screen in SOF2. NVIDIA cards are much smoother can't say any great things about the new cards coming out but my GeForce3 Ti200 flat out rocks
wolfie25 04-12-2003, 01:13 PM i had a geforce 4 mx 440 but sold it for full price and got a geforce4 Ti 4200 128mb, and havnt had any problems yet!!,i guess its down to what you pay most of the time !!alot of the computers for sale in stores , have the mx440 as standard these days, so dont expect to much !!

If your goign to buy crapy graphics cards in the first place, dont expect much out of it dink. You get a Ti series and it'll kick anythings ass for the price! I'v built more computers than you'll ever see in your life time. This doesnt mean I know everything, becuase Ill be the first to admit that I dont! BUT ATI has had so many prblems in the past and all their bogus drivers..ugh..the nightmares...nVidia Ti series is the best out on the market...FOR THE PRICE! ATI owned the desktop OEM market for many years but thier gaming cards notoriously sucked, then after nVidia killed 3DFX they started getting some OEM wins, so ATI turns it up a notch and right now nVdia is reeling, they have been late to the market with thier new flagship GPU cuz ATI keeps crankin em out and nVidia can't keep up, serves nVidia right they killed 3DFX
for the record i have owned all and as long as they do the job i don't care who makes it
oh yeah and GeFroceMX-anything sucks gigantic donky scrotum, what did you expect it was $70? go spend $70 on an ATI card and it will suck too

DrEvil 04-12-2003, 06:55 PM New Maximum PC...Tested GeForce FX 5800 Ultra and Radeon 9800 Pro.
Ati got the kick ass award and won hands down over the Nvidia card.
Same price for both cards. Ati still wins..Go figure!

Radeon 9800 Pro: First
Benchmarks
ATI has just announced its challenge to nVidia’s GeForce FX. The new card is called Radeon 9800 Pro, and it packs mucho 3D firepower in a quiet, unassuming package.
BY MAXIMUM PC STAFF
Maximum PC was lucky enough to secure a fully reviewable version of the
card about three weeks ago, and we’ll be comparing it to the GeForce FX in the Head2Head department of our April issue, which should be on newsstands soon. In you want to read the full testing and benchmark analysis, buy the magazine. But if you just want the short story – and our ATI versus nVidia benchmarks – read on.
The battle for frame rate supremacy was intense. ATI won the majority of tests, but nVidia chalked up wins in a few key categories. The ATI card took top honors in the benchmarks that are limited by a card’s memory bandwidth, while the GeForce FX scored big in benchmarks that stress GPU performance.
The GeForce FX 5800 Ultra performed best when running with 2x AA and 8x aniso filtering enabled (the nVidia-recommended settings). In Quake III at those settings, the nVidia card was almost 38 percent faster than the 9800 Pro, nearly mirroring the actual speed difference between the two cards’ cores. (The GeForce FX’s core is 32 percent faster than the core of our 9800 Pro sample.) But when we increased AA settings to 4x, the GeForce FX’s memory-bandwidth handicap actually made it 7 percent slower than the ATI card in Quake III.
ATI’s primary advantage is its faster memory pipeline. In any benchmark that’s memory-bandwidth intensive—such as Dungeon Siege at high res with AA and aniso enabled, or pretty much anything else at 1600x1200 with 4x AA enabled—the ATI card has a definitive lead over the nVidia card. Fortunately for ATI, most of today’s games are memory-bandwidth limited, which gives ATI a clear advantage in both today’s games and the increasingly complex games we’ll see next year.
Here are nVidia’s and ATI’s key specs, followed by the benchmarks we recorded in the Maximum PC Lab.
The Specs: nVidia GF FX 5800 Ultra
> Core type: nVidia NV30
> Core clock: 500MHz
> Core process: 0.13-micron
> Memory type: DDR II
> Memory size: 128MB
> Memory speed: 500MHz
> Available: Now
The Specs: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
> Core type: ATI R350
> Core clock: 378MHz*
> Core process: 0.15-micron
> Memory type: DDR
> Memory size: 128MB
> Memory speed: 338MHz*
> Available: Now
* These are the core and memory clock speeds of the actual Radeon 9800 Pro board tested for this story. Shipping clock speeds are slightly higher (380MHz core/340MHz memory).
Best scores are marked in red. We ran all tests on a new 3.06GHz Pentium 4 test bed. Low-Quality settings have no anti-aliasing and no anisotropic filtering. Medium-Quality settings are 2x AA and 8x aniso. High-Quality settings are 4x AA and 8x aniso. All tests are run in 32-bit color. We ran Dungeon Siege, the Quake III MaxPC demo, both Unreal Tournament 2003 benchmarks, and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter at 1600x1200. For Serious Sam, the Extreme GFX setting was used as well. 3DMark2001:SE Game 2 and Game 4 are reported at 1280x1024, but the 3DMark 2001:SE overall score is run with default settings.
