Hi all. I was going to take the bike to a morning ride before work but after I warmed it up and everything, I kicked it in gear and the bike just would not move. It gets in gear, I think, but it kind of feels like the brakes are holding it back??? You know, like how you have you hand brake on in your car and the car leans forward. Pretty similar to that. I called the dealer and they said that it might be the shifter thing a ma jig but I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem before. My bike has about 8k miles, if that matters. Anyone have any suggestions before I take it into the dealers? The work should be covered under warranty but I think I might have to shell out the dough for the tow and what not. Suggestions please.

Jack each end of the bike up and see if you can turn the wheels. If you can turn both with the bike in nuetral then it must be the tranny. If you can't move the front, unlikely, then it would be the front brakes/bearings. If you can't move the rear can you move it enough to take up the slack in the chain? If so then tranny/clutch problem, if not then rear brakes/bearing problem. Just a thouhgt to get you more information. J

have you tried to see if you can start in second or if the bike will even go up into the higher gears ?

Hocuz, if the engine is trying to move the drive chain (it takes the slack out of the chain) then the problem is probably with your brakes. If this is the case, it could be caused by corrosion between the pads and the rotors or between the cylinders and the calipers. If you can roll the bike around with the transmission in neutral or holding the clutch lever in, then the problem is probably in your transmission. Another way to check is to lift up a wheel and try to spin it. Good luck!

thanks for the suggestions. i tried rolling the bike (this morning) in neutral and with the clutch in but the bike still wont move. i didn't try propping the bike up so see if the wheels spin yet so i will try that when i get home tonight. oh, another thing that i remember from this morning. when i first tried to get it in gear, i heard some noise from the gears like it was searching for first gear. that doesnt sound very descriptive but that is the best i can do.

hocuz, how did the clutch feel when you pulled it in and out? won't roll you say and the bike is not in gear right? and the brakes are not dragging at all right? very odd problem for a 2001 R1:confused: I sure would like to know what is causing this myself...

Bleed the brakes for a second(literally) and see if they let up.

Sometimes the front brake pads get rusted to the rotor. Just get on the bike and lunge forward to see if it breaks free. I noticed this happed to My bike a couple times and it can happen overnight if the conditions are right !!

championr1, what did you do to fix it?

I just got on the bike and pushed all my weight forward in one motion and it snapped free. I had washed My bike and it sat for like a couple days rusting the pads to the rotor :crash If thats what the problem is then after you break it free you can look at the imprint of the pad on the rotor.

champion r1 thanks for the help. it looks like that was what happened. it broke free this morning when the tow truck guy came and we tried to move the bike onto his flatbed. cost me $25 but i'm sure that is a lot less than what the dealer would have charged me. thanks again for the help. geez, and i only left the bike alone for 4 days... emotionally bike, i guess. :lol

Cool glad to help :yesnod Next time you wash it try to take it out and heat up the front & rear brakes to get rid of all the moisture ;)
