: Rude awakening...

I think I gave a zx-6r rider a rude awakening this afternoon coming back to work from lunch. Pulling off the highway, he was in front of me on the offramp, I was driving my car, a 1988 Pontiac GTA. Performance WS6 suspension (factory option). Basically a special edition Firebird Trans Am for those unfamiliar with GM vehicles. This offramp is a posted 35mph offramp. I can easily run it with my GTA at 70mph. 75-80mph if I'm willing to accept some tire squeal and a bit of sliding. On my bike I've regularly taken it at 85-95mph without a hint of trouble. Anyways, this dude on his 6R takes the offramp at just under 65mph, and I'm right behind him the whole way in my GTA. Once we get through the corner and he straightens his bike up, I notice him check his mirror and then quickly look back at me as if in surprise. When we get to the lights at the end of the offramp he pulls off to the side and motions me forward, then pulls up to my window and asks what sort of work I've done to my car. I tell him it's almost completely stock. He says it can't be stock and take that corner at those speeds. the light turns green, I say Well, believe whatever you want, and drive off back to work.

:p I meant to portray his false belief in riding skills he obviously doesn't have in reality, not to brag about my own skills with either my bike or my car, which obviously are very excellent, though ;)

There are some off ramps in my are that are marked 35 mph as well. I can get me Ford Pinto's 13 inch tires squealing through the turns at about 100 mph! THe suspension is completely stock except for the bubble gum and JB Weld modifications. The rusty holes in the muffler really add to the torque as well.

one time I followed a guy through about a 2 mile stretch of twisties in my pinto and he was on a GSXR-1000. I stayed about 10 ft from his rear wheel with no problem. I guess he didnt have the skills he thought he did! Either that or my high performance all weather radial tires really stuck me to the road.

Ha ha....:bs

The fact that you were all over that kid's bike in the corner shouldn't have surprised him. Anyone who's read any of the car v. bike shootouts should've learned that cars are better in the corners (unless they're a boat) by virtue of their much larger contact patches. Bikes stomp cars because they can out accelerate the car from corner to corner. The margin the cars gain on the bikes in the corners isn't significant enough to make up enough time on the bike. There are never enough corners to make it a fair fight......

I really hate people who like to show off their cars to motorcyclists. Whenever i see a retard behind me trying to impress me with his boremobile, i get very annoyed. I usually wait until they get to a red light, and break one of his mirrors off.

There is nothing dumber than a car trying to keep up with a motorcycle. Lets say the motorcyclist crashs.. Geez, im sorry mr motorcyclists. The car ran you over and severed your head because he wanted to impress you..

It seems that when im in a good spirit to ride my bike fast, i never encounter any car that wants to challenge me. But whenever im outta of my leather, just going to buy groceries, some retard always wants to race me around the parking lot.

I would have phrased it a little more delicately than Ricardo, but I more or less agree.

The fact that I could take some corners at 25-30 mph faster doesn't mean I should. The guy on the Kaw didn't notice you were there and wasn't cruising to impress, or he might not have been as familiar with the onramp. I know some racers who could smoke 98% of the riders on the road but are very reserved and docile in traffic or metro areas.

Even if he's at a stage where he's not as great a rider, so what? You want him to exceed his limits like R1-Stunta just so a stranger will think he's "kewl?" (Sorry, amigo, you've learned your lesson, it's just an easy example.)

There's nothing worse than a motorcyclist who takes pleasure in doing things that would piss any of us off if it was done to us. I cringe when I hear someone bragging about opening the door or closing the gap when a rider -- be it sportbike, Harley or scooter -- is splitting the lanes at a traffic light, or driving up somebody's :butt on an onramp.

The guy showed great class in asking about the car instead of responding with :finger, :bash, or :machinegu.

Maybe he looked back at you to say,"what the **** is your problem asshole?"

If someone rode your ass at 65 I'm sure you would be here crying about it.

That is no longer the case, to wit, the ZO6 vs GIXXER 1000 shoot-out. So while what you said was once the case, it is now so last week. :)

People play and it can go both ways. I have an 01 r1, and somebody in a mustang was trying to keep up with me on the 30mph turns on the road i live on. Once i realized that he was trying to keep up, i took the turns progressivley faster, and he couldn't/wouldn't keep up, but it was very obvious that he had been trying on the previous turns.

I also have an 89 iroc (camaro with handling package, same as the ws6). The iroc will surprise people who don't know, have played with others in my car on my stretch of road. I am just saying that if the bike started playing with him, it is o.k. to play back - and surprise someone who doesn't know how well these cars handle. Good spirited playing is always fun! :)

Ive had the same thing happen. Sometimes i dont even know they are trying to keep up with me, but a couple of times i have looked in my mirrors and i have seen the cars go off the road and into the grass. This guy in a mustang went off road, and his car started spining, eventually it hit a tree from the rear, i had to go see if the guy was alright. He said i was fast, and he seemed kinda embarrassed cause i didnt say anything other than if he was okay, he left in a hurry.

Poor bastage...

I had some guy in an older Integra with a fat exhaust pipe (and that was about all it had) try to take me on the R1.
You all know how that went...this was on a straight.
This is what I told him: :finger

 Dude, i love the Vette as much as anyone (i own one) but in all honesty the Z06 is no match for the big Gixx on the average track....unless there's a sharp corner every 100 feet- given the skill of the pilots is not a factor. I believe a fight between something like a Viper is more of a battle. The Vip has the HP to make the straits more of a battle.... Oh, and until you've driven the Dodge, DO NOT underestimate its cornering prowess- those HUGE Michelin's (sp?) do their job well. There was a test conducted in one of my bike mags that i'll have to dig up here, where they conducted this exact test. So unless your name is Colin or Nicky.....:bs

I think I remember something about that test. Didn't the Viper go off-track trying to keep up with the bike, shredding it's basically cut racing slicks, and eventually blow the motor? The Viper has huge horsepower numbers but isn't it kind of lardy for a sportscar? I'm sure the bike beat it pretty handily despite it not being a hyper-sportbike on DOT approved rubber. Can't remember what bike they used but I do remember there were more track-worthy bikes that they could've used at the time. For some reason I'm thinking it was a Yamaha Thunderace as they're called in Europe. Anyone care to correct my memory shortcomings?

Yeah, i remember what your talking about. It was quite a few years ago (mid 90's) when they had a new (at the time) Viper against the (before the birth of the R1) YZF-1000. The Viper blew up. I don't remember the specifics....but the track times they were cutting with the bike definantly could've been better.
The test i'm talking about, however, was just a few months ago. I can't remember the track- i will make an efffort to find the mag. guys. The Viper did not blow up- and they (sorry to say) were able to cut some really impressive times with the car. Bike-beating times. :(
