hey guys, im so pumped. i have a 2002 r1 and ive only put 1,200 miles on my bike. Today i learned how to do 2nd gear clutch wheelies. I CAN FLY. I wasnt all that great at wheelies, i would just bring it up in first gear and let it come right back down, thats not a wheelie. Today i got it down, ive been trying the past couple days, these clutch wheelies. AND NOW I GOT IT. i start at about 30 mph in 2nd, then i pull the clutch, rev it to about 8 grand, then dump the clutch and up she comes, On a good one, i can go to about 100 mph. I can probably go about a 100 yards or so(300 feet). Today is one of the best days of my life. We practice on this road that leads to an old ski resort thats not open anymore. Hey guy, at what rpm should i shift to third? i have to pace mysef or im going to get hurt. Wow man, when that tire hits that ground from a dead stop, it sounds awsome. This is like getting laid for the first time.:jump

How fast does the bike come up, and does it go right to the balance point? You actually got away with dumping the clutch at 8 grand without the bike flipping?
I was under the impression you are supposed to fan the clutch and not drop it?
I hope you cover the back brake at all times...
I have yet to find the balance point on my 02. Its pissing me off. Can you feel it. Is it a distinct feel.

sorry, i meant to say " feather the clutch" i dont just dump the clutch. The bike comes up real smooth. The only way it shoots up to quick is if you let the clutch out to fast. Its not to hard to find your balancing point this way. I feel clutching it in 2nd is probably the best and safest way to pull a lengthy wheelie. 1rst is too powerfull. Youl kill yourself in first.

I have an 01' R1. I am still learning to do wheelies on the R1 myself. I can do 1st gear wheelies like you but they only last 30 ft., that's why I inquire about your 2nd gear wheelie with the clutch.
I have always heard from everyone that clutch wheelies are more controllable and are the safest.
So how fast does your front end rise when you do them? Is it quick like a 1st gear power wheelie or more slow and gradual?
Mark
Have you tried a power wheelie ... without the clutch?
Oh and congrats:finger

BUGS, you will know when you find it. Try clutching second. Its the best feeling in the world. Im going to try standing up. i cant believe im doing this good. ive only got about 2500 miles riding experience.
1,200 miles on my r6 before it got stolen
and 1,300 on my new r1. What a peice of work.
GOOD LUCK BUGS. BE CAREFULL. SHE WILL BITE.

slow and gradual, just pace yourself. Get a feel for it before you try and ride one out.
I use to be able to wheely the sh?? out of my R6 but for some reason I just can't get use to the r1. I always let off to early. I have 1k on it.
Tomorrow I am dedicating myself to finding the balance point.

I used to clutch up my wheelies on my 600 until I had to replace 2nd gear. Twice. Now I power all of them up. Even in third (stand ups with a yank.) Seriously, clutching them up in second is pretty hard on the bike. I'd hate for you to mess up a bike that nice. And pace yourself on the wheelies. It's hard, but learn slowly so you dont' get in over your head. I'd hate for you to mess yourself up, too.

I'll tell you what I did to really improve my wheelies. Go buy a unicycle and learn to ride it. It will definitely help out your balance. It will take most peolple a bit of time, but once you can ride that thing you will have calibrated your equilibrium to a whole new level.

juttsr1. be careful! When you do standups make sure there is no wind gusts.. I had a slapper today that you don't want to get without a steering damper. I was in 3rd doing around 150km/h.
regarding shifting to 3rd while you're wheeling. Since you're lofting the front in 2nd you should shift to 3rd pretty fast. almost immediately after you bring it up.
but PLEASE be careful.
I got no problem hitting the balance point. The balance point is probably around 20cm further up than where you are right now. You know when you're there because you no longer need to rev any further and you feel how vertical you are.
