BigMikeW 04-12-2002, 10:41 PM Okay, I realize this is going to be an unpopular statement, but I am really having trouble getting comfortable on my new 02 R1. Realizing that I have only had it for 3 days, and I am sure I will find a more comfortable riding position, but right now I am really struggling. Not only do I keep racking myself, I find myself carrying most the weight on my wrist and arms which is going to hamper steering !!! Trying my best to sit back farther but that puts even more weight on my hands. I realize I have purchased an ultimate Super Bike and it is not going to be the most comfortable thing on two wheels. But I feel the 02 is much less comfortable than the 01 R1 and the GSXR.
Would appreciate any advice, starting to think I made a wrong decision with my purchase.....
Wicked 04-12-2002, 10:43 PM Sorry, thats what the R1 is all about. Should have got a 954 if you needed comfort. FOr me it hurt more the first week, now it does not bother me at all (unless its in stop and go traffic) but thats the trade off to have such an awsome bike.
markeddy 04-12-2002, 10:49 PM I am not sure if the 02' R1 has them but I think they have bar shims that allow you to adjust the height of the handle bars for more comfort.
I don't know that much about them, just have heard about them.
Check around and post a NEW FORUM message and maybe some people can offer some ideas.
I have the same problem sometimes on my R1 with my wrists hurting. I also have from time to time smacked my nuts pretty good because I ride a little more forward on the R1.
Otherwise when I first switched over from my CBR F4i, I had a tough time and had second thoughts about why I traded in my F4i for an R1. It took me about 1 week before my body took form to the bike.

Speed up a little and you'll forget about the discomfort.:rock:rock :rock
martinc 04-12-2002, 11:09 PM Robert has a device which attach itself to the gas tank, giving some sort of releif to your/his nuts...or so he told me...lol
maybe he could direct you ?
Swedie 04-13-2002, 04:03 AM what are these things called that hockey player uses to protect their nuts? :D
Olddog 04-13-2002, 08:53 AM No offence meant here;) , but get that thing GOING a little bit. The wind blast at around 75mph and up helps pull the weight off your wrists.;)
I know I'm one of the older geezers on the forum, but honestly, the R-1 doesn't hurt me unless we do a 500 mile + day, then it's my neck and my shoulders, and a couple of Advil and a:beer make it all better soon;)
That being said, we do very little in city slow stuff here, but that's where sitting upright with the left hand on the hip makes things OK.
ChampionR1 04-13-2002, 09:02 AM Looks like you better make your way down to the local veterinarian and get neutered :lol
ricardo 04-13-2002, 09:24 AM The r1, gsxr1000, and ducatis are not sopposed to be confortable.
If you speed up and do some cornering work, you will forget about the pain, because the wind blast takes some weight off your wrists.
You can also buy a corbin seat, that helped me quite a bit.
You can get handlebar raisers which should help the comfort.
The r1 is not a couch.

RaceRocketRider 04-13-2002, 10:13 AM BigMikeW,
You're not alone! I just read the first in-depth test on the 2002 R1 in Sport Rider mag (IMO the best sportbike mag in the US) and the only thing Andy Trevitt could complain about the R1 is it's ergos. He mentioned the whole wrist/crotch problem that you complained about.
I don't have my R1 yet (early May) so I can't really comment.
I think that hyper sportbikes like the R1, GSXR1000, Ducati 916/996/998 are going to be uncomfortable for every day use but this will be forgotten when you ride the corners aggressively!! :rock
I've read in the past that many owners of sportbikes that find the reach to the low clip-ons unbearable buy heli-bars. I assume these are handle bar riser blocks that bolt on to raise the bars up and/or back so it isn't such a reach to the bars.
martinc 04-13-2002, 11:09 AM i got the rear cranked over an inch and the front lowered
about 5mm;stock clipons height but:
harris adjustable rearsets adjusted at a special angle;take the maximum up/rear adjustment;drill the hole a bit bigger so the bolt can move a bit,go forward one notch at the top bolt and this is my setup;seems to releive the wrists a bit...high mileage is no problem and i"m 36.
R1ODEO 04-13-2002, 12:10 PM :D Ahhhh quit your whining .....No seriously I find that once you get used to it it gets much better although the tank does bust my in the balls quite a bit at times I just make sure I give my balls a good massage at stoplights and then go on my merry way .....All R 1 riders should universally pick up the practise of preciously rubbing our nuts at stoplights ...I think all the :boobies would like that manly ritual and we would get layed all the time ...Has anyones R1 gotten them layed yet???:rock :makeout :boobies I shouldn't be writing this I'm 35 for cryin' out loud , and I'm planning a trip to Deals Gap!!!! Ahhhh it's great owning an R 1 !!!!:crash
I don't have a problem with the balls thing, but my tank has a few dents in it.
The wrist thing can be alleviated by changing the angle of you forearms. When driving lean over a little more and try to make your forearms parallel with the grips. When twisting down a country road this is easy, but in normal stop and go traffic you're just going to have to get used to it. In fact for commuting, I wear a brace on right wrist.
Kegser 04-13-2002, 05:53 PM It's all a matter of adjusting to different conditions. You'd be surprised how even the smallest difference in riding position can cause extra stress on joints and muscles.... the only way to combat this problem is to simply build up and stretch said muscles and free up the joints..... by lots of riding :)
Sportsbikes weren't designed to be comfortable commuters; although in saying that I use mine for a lot of commuting through the city and haven't had any major problems. It gets easier with time.
As soon as you get up over 60mph the wind will relieve a lot of the pressure on your wrist....
Officer: "Do you realise you were going 170mph?"
Rider: "Yes but it relieves the strain on my wrists! My Doctor told me to do it! Want to see my note?"
dfastr1 04-13-2002, 07:01 PM first I am glad to here. That you men get racked all the time:jump
I thought it was the way I rode ,But I get racked all the time too. An I 'm a chick an it hurt like hell learning to do wheelies I though I was gonna hurt the cookie, like forever or something. I think I broke mussels or something down there.
:cryin
As for gettin laid.. honey I park my R1 an have to fend off the men , ....I met my hubby at work he asked me out a few times. He asked me to go to october fest. I kind of blew him off. he asked me one more time. I was like ok. I will go with you for a ride on your bike .I went..... He did a wheelie with me on there. honey, I was hooked, we got off the bike took off the helmets I grabbed his hair an pulled him towards me an gave him a kiss he would never forget. mmm:boobies
Now I will never get off............The bike ...........an the hubby............ I am hooked for life......
Sorry to carry on ....D:rock
Solidus 04-16-2002, 12:13 AM I picked up my 02 today and besides being a silent bastard, I noticed too that it was heavy baggin my nutz. I guess I thought mine were just that big or somethin.:yesnod . I never had that problem on the 01. I guess it's the new slim tank . It's ok though , you got to have leather ballz .
SVSer 08-13-2002, 12:39 PM I had comfort problems with my SVS.
These risers make sense:

DogBoneR1 08-13-2002, 03:55 PM You'll be okay once you develope a calus on your pecker and nuts. I know I am.:lol
Suicycle 08-13-2002, 05:04 PM when braking hard, slide foward and pinch the tank with knees. it dont work when you have passengers though. if you stay above 80 your wrists will feel better, and dont death grip the clip-ons, just relax.
ShaSha 08-14-2002, 01:15 PM It definitely gets better the longer you have the bike. I was getting a major pain in the ass from the seat after a long ride-- I used to get off at stoplights and hobble around a like an old lady. But now i guess I must have calluses like golf balls on my ass cause it doesn't hurt me tender portions anymore. PS go faster-- you don't give a shit about pain at 130mph.
brianb 08-14-2002, 01:21 PM Quit sitting so close to the tank. Slide back some.
When I first got my R1 I sat too close but now that I am familiar with the bike I sit back and even sometimes have my ass touching the rear seat.
I havent ridden the 02 but riding in jeans on my 00 I had the same problem. But when I ride in race leathers, the problem is gone!
I found that riding on just about any modern sport bike with only jeans will rack the nutz. Leather pants, and wear bicycle shorts under for more 'support.' This helps me some. Plus all the stuff the other guys have said about forearm position, and squeezing the tank with the knees. One last thing I do is to tuck my heel into the guards as much as possible to further add to my knee squeeze and support my lower back--rotate hips forward a little bit. This will work every muscle in your body from your low-back down, but it will take the weight off your wrists.
