I have a Euro or Canadian (not sure which, but it is an unrestricted model) '99 R1 currently here in Japan. I will be moving to the US soon and will need to switch the speedo to mph reading. Is it possible to change it on the current unit? Or do I need to buy a whole new display? Any ideas?

Thanks

It depends, canadian versions cannot be switched. Euro versions can be. If you find out that it is a canadian, you can buy a yellow box and convert it. If you have your owners manual it should walk you through how to change it.

HOLD THE LEFT BUTTON DOWN WHILE THE MILEAGE IS SHOWING UNTIL IT CHANGES. ON NEWER MODELS YOU PRESS BOTH BUTTONS TOGETHER WHILE MILEAGE IS SHOWING. LET ME KNOW ONCE YOU GET IT. I HAVE A 01, BUT MY FRIENDS 99 EURO CHANGES SO YOURS SHOULD WORK TOO.
TRY AND SELL THE BIKE CAUSE CUSTOMS WILL DESTROY IT IF YOU HAVE NO "EPA" STICKER. I HAVE SEEN 01' R1'S GO FOR $5500 CAUSE LAST MINUTE THEY FOUND OUT THAT BAD NEWS.
GOOD LUCK.....:cryin

Awamori,
how long have you been in Okinawa? I was just down in Kadena last year with my NSR. Maybe we know each other?

Customs will let a bike be imported as long as it is converted to US specs. I already have a US silencer on it with the EPA decibal rating, and the only other change would be the speedo and possibly the jetting. I am also in the Military and Customs seems to leave most of us alone.

Also, I was informed by a local importer that all '00 and up R1's actually meet US specs and dont require a conversion, even though they dont all have the EPA/DOT plate on them.

I have looked pretty thoroughly into the import info on the DOT/NHTSA website.

By the way, I know tons of people in California who have NSR's licensed on the street. Now if that isnt bending the Customs rules...:rock

I have an 01 Canadian R1. You cannot switch it on the gauges itself by holding a button. I have a 'yellow box' and the gauges still display in km as a unit of measure, but the #'s are reading mph. Also, temp still registers in celsius.

I am at kadena here in okinawa. i saw your NSR parked by the AGE shop last year. nice bike, loved the single swing arm. i am also moving to the states shortly and i have a 99' R-1. i went to TMO this week and they told me that if the bike shows up in the states at the port without the epa sticker it will be destroyed on site. they said that this is a new change in the "rules." if you get your bike to the states let me know how you do it. i also have a euro spec R-1 and you can change the speedometer to mph by holding the left button for 3 seconds like awamori said.

Early R1s can be converted by bridging a soldered conection on the PCB in the clocks. I think it was connection 12 or 13. Depending on which one you bridged you got MPH and centigrade temp or farenheight. E mail me for full details.

So whats the story did it switch? 98-99 Hold left button until you see the switch. 00-01 Hold both buttons at the same time till you see the switch. All four years need to have the mileage showing before switch takes place. Let us all know you got it. :)

No go.

Tried 3 ways and she would not switch. Holding down only the left or right does nothing, holding down both only turns it to the clock mode.

Any suggestions?

I just bought a Euro Spec 2000 R-1 and haven't been able to switch from kph to mph but everyone says it can be done, they just dont know how, will try the methods mentioned. I'm not leaving Okinawa for another 2 years and a few months and am on Lester between Foster and Kadena. I'm a civilian though, my wifes a 1st Lt in the USMC on Foster.

So far the only things I've heard need to be done to the Euro spec bikes is they need the light switch changed so that the lights can NOT be turned off if the bike is running, you need the EPA emission stamp on your exhaust, I "think" any vehicle you take stateside needs new tires first thing, I also heard you need a new VIN plate for your bike, I'm sure there are other regulations but since you can drain the oil and ship it with your househole goods there shouldn't be a problem coming up with the mod money since you save on shipping and duties.

If anyone can find a complete and definitive list to what mods need to be done to convert Euro spec to US spec plz post it here, I'd appreciate it.
