: Swearing censor.
zorgen 05-01-2003, 05:49 PM Come on!! This is a motorcycle message board with a bunch of relatively young guys who swear as a way of life. Its these guys who buy the products who keep the board financially viable. Little children and nuns are not connecting to this site. Why the H E L L do you feel the need to put a bunch of **** ing stars in place of some honest feelings. Put this board back the way it was or possibly prepare to lose customers to a place where we can be ourselves.
If you don't like swearing go to church, this isn't church.
Judge 05-01-2003, 05:52 PM I worship my R1 does that count?
ya know... I should keep my mouth shut by I usually do not. This is a bike oriented site...most bikers swear....its not like society is not used to "profanity".....and I am sick of hearing the "kids might be reading this stuff" excuse...ya have to be 18 to register right?
R6 Untouchable 05-01-2003, 06:01 PM Don, get the **** on AOL you ****ty **** **** sucker! :p jk...but not about you getting on AOL
VPREATR 05-01-2003, 06:13 PM zorgen:
In the future, try e-mailing a moderator or administrator for site related issues; our guidelines and policies are quite clear at this time. We're only filtering 5-words (w/variations) thus having very little impact on conceptual content.
Thanks!
getchellad 05-01-2003, 07:49 PM Ever wonder what words are censored..... ****, ****, dick, ****, *****, ass, gixer.... lol
martinc 05-01-2003, 07:52 PM I"m wondering what pourcentage of members actually have bought something from a sponsor.....
I bet not many.

Hey, I think this is a valid thread. We are the community, this is a community issue not a one man to moderator issue. I think Zorg's right.
It makes this site ridiculous. I mean, come on, it's like a bad joke.
Mods have stated that there is some 'Silent majority out there" that wants this kind of censorship, well, prove it! It's public censorship, it's a public issue worthy of discussion eh?

I bought from cycle mall today.
9mile 05-01-2003, 07:57 PM I've also Spent over $1500 at EMA-USA, and bought a ton of little things from tobefast.
I support the sponsors. I don't support censorship.

Why would I want to do that? The whole reason for making this public is to hopefully get enought people fired up to complain to you and get the frickin censor turned off.
Ok?
Magnus 05-01-2003, 08:09 PM I have purchased approximately $1000 in items from sponsors.
9mile 05-01-2003, 08:11 PM Are the sponsors listening to this?
YOU ARE DRIVING CUSTOMERS AWAY WITH THIS POLICY!
I've spent over $2000 this past year on the sponsors merchandise, and this is making me want to NOT do so in the future.

I purchased something from a forum sponsor (won't mention any names), and the guy on the phone and the guy in the background were cussing up a storm! :lol I thought it was funny as hell, and I thought about the PG-13 Rule while I held in my laughter.
I don't think the censorship is that big of a deal. Even with the little "*'s" I still know what message is being conveyed. Honestly, I think the site looks a little better since the censorship took effect. It's actually kinda nice to have discussions with members without constantly readin ****, ****, ****, ****sucker! :lol

First off, I never stated the thread wasn't valid, nor was the thread closed. Secondly the fastest way to have site related questions answered is by contacting the moderators/administrators directly. :fact
Thanks!

Your assumption is inaccurate. If you choose not to purchase from a sponsor due to spite, that is unfortunately your loss; our sponsors are some of the best in the business. In fact many of our sponsors own R1's, hence one of the reasons they chose to contribute towards the forums growth.
It's hard to believe you would spite yourself over the usage of colorful metaphors.
Regards.

As I started earlier, the fastest method of achieving an answer concerning forum operations is by contacting the moderators/administrators directly. That said, we're open to suggestions, comments and pro-active advice in maintaining a well balanced community; however we refuse to deal with a mob-mentality tactic.
We've stated time and time again why the filters were enabled. Spend a moment realizing the amount of traffic on the forum and the effect overly emphasized color metaphor usage can attract unwanted attention on corporate networks. Over 25% of our forum traffic is from these environments; that is over 2000 members.
Regards.
9mile 05-01-2003, 09:10 PM The Sponsors should know what may affect their business in a negative way...Don't you think?
If a most of us think this censorship is infantile then it follows that our interest in tis site and visits will diminish, thereby decreasing the worth of this site as a platform for advertisig and sales.
Hell, if I do stop coming to this site or contributing to this site or the sponsors because of a censorship policy shouldn't they at least know why?
Censorship is making this site stand out from the rest in a silly way. Silly is not good for business.
Viking 05-01-2003, 09:11 PM I totally agree with the decision to limit the swearing and porn. Although I am in favor of both personally it doesn't make this site very professional, and takes away from the goal of this site. Look at where this site was just before SpidermanSS took over. I visited the site less and less each day, and I'm sure I wasn't alone. Since then though, the topics seem to be more sincere and much more informative. Once again just my 0.2
By the way, do some business with www.tobefast.com and you'll understand exactly what kind of people are running this site. So far I'm pretty impressed.
bobjonez 05-01-2003, 09:26 PM Everything on my bike has come from sponsors except my Devil exhaust. I've seen teen oriented forums with much worse language than anything that was ever posted here. I'm no fan of censorship.
Wasn't this issue discussed like 2 weeks ago. Zorgen, where have you been?
I personally have supported several sponsors.
McCoy Motorsports
Gregg's Customs
Indy Superbikes
EMA-USA
Libertek
Cyclemall
Moto-Graphics
And just because I can't type a couple cuss words doesn't mean I'm not going to stop getting great deals from great companies.
:)
VPREATR 05-01-2003, 09:28 PM 9mile:
We have effectively doubled our member base in less than 4-months after invoking the new policy changes; it took 2-years to obtain the first %50 under the previously un-enforced guidelines; we pay very close attention to usage and member statistics to insure a balance for ALL the forum members is being provided. I understand your logic, unfortunately it is without any supportive evidence in relationship to the positive benefits shown since invoking such said policy changes.
At present our sponsors are very pleased with existing member traffic, what your missing is that fact many of our sponsors provide discounts to R1-Forum.com members; thus making the benefit of being a member far greater. More often than not I’ll mention my membership and a small discount will be applied; membership does have advantages.
As for the term censorship, it truly doesn’t apply in this particular case; censorship is the censoring of a concept, thought or idea; are you say that your unable to convey a clear concept or thought without the usage of expletives?
Viking:
Thank you for the support, indeed the goal is a professional environment that promotes quality content, communication and a true sense or community for everyone.
Thanks!

Well, maybe you're confused. Webster defines a Censor as :
"One authorized to examine material, as literature or plays, and remove or suppress anything considered objecionable"
Sounds like you ****ing suppressing my material.
It aint right dude, and in your heart of hearts you know I'm right.

Let's pretend for a second that you are right. Is that gonna change the rule?
Every household has rules. Even the R1-Forum.com household.
We may not agree with them everytime but we just gotta learn to live with it.
:)
BiterWV 05-01-2003, 09:44 PM Let me get this right, if we can't "cuss" then we can't get our points across. I just don't get it. Plural....agreed,lol
BiterWV 05-01-2003, 09:58 PM In WV, we "cuss" not "curse", lol...... slang thang you know!
9mile 05-01-2003, 10:00 PM Nickle and dime-ing and slippery sloping right into the dead center of mediocrity.
Ah well, anybody wanna go for a ride?
Why do I care? Well, sometimes the smell of BS is just too strong for me to keep my trap shut when I damn well should.
It just gets tiresome. This forum is great, but it just gets chipped away at ya know? The R1 itself just says **** off to polite society, but apparently we can't to the same here in the R1's temple of worship.
Ah well, there is no tyranny more irksome than a petty tyranny.
I don't care anymore. No more drama from me boss, not tonight. I'll put up and shut up and do what's good for me ok?
nonchron 05-01-2003, 10:14 PM shit is a swear allowed on day time cable. **** is not. But it is allowed on radio after 10 pm.
Maybe only members should be allowed to read swears. :o
Hey! They fixed shit!
NoMAD 05-01-2003, 11:56 PM I don't mind a little profanity and I actually enjoy a little porn. But I often browse the web during the day at work. I can't browse sites that might get me fired. So for me, disallowing that stuff is just fine. I get those kicks elsewhere. Keep the forum in good public standing. My $.02

Draggin 05-02-2003, 12:52 AM wow...is all of this bullshit really necessary?
Freedom is the american way; we have the choice to do what we want when we want...when freedoms no matter how trivial are infringed upon it just get peoples hair up, is that hard to understand? Personally, I think that the censorship on this motorcycle forum (that is what this is, isnt it?) is kinda silly....its like watered down beer, its just not as fun lol......ill leave the rest of my comments to myself....
