I've got a 2001 R1. Can someone describe the method to install new fork springs. I've installed springs and valve kits before but only on conventional "right way up" forks, never upside downs.

Do you have a manual? I too have done many conventional style forks but I would think the inverted are similar. I'll check my service manual.

P.S. BUMP:)

I've got a basic manual but it doesnt go into the dissassembly of the forks.

Found it......on another web site.

1- unwind spring preloaded all the way
2- Unscrew the main fork cap to the top
3- push tube above the fork spring down untill the 14mm locking nut is exposed. You'll need someone to help you do that.
5- place something (plate with a 10mm open slot) under the 14mm nut so it hols the spring down.
6- Unscrew the top section which is above the 14mm nut, the fork top section will now come off.
7- Plate may now be carfully removed and spring will simply lift out.

Re-assembly is basically the reverse of the above.

Nearly....on reasembly the one complication is that the damper rod (one with the nut on) will fall down the tube, you need to hold it up while squashing the spring. I used a bit of threaded rod on the end of it and held it in my teeth while pushing down on the spring. It occured to me you could also tie string or fine wire around the rod. On dissasembly, I did it without a plate, just lodged the spacer beneath the nut for long enough to get an open ended wrench on the nut. same on reasembly (I did it all solo btw)

You want to change the oil while you are in there. Invert fork, pump damper rod to get all oil out. Refil with specd quantity (with no spring and fork outer fully slid over fork inner), pump damper rod to expell air, leave to settle, set oil level to speced air gap by sucking excess air out. (you want a syringe with the set amount of tubing on, syringe should be free from chemists and I put a bit of tubing on the end and strapped it to a metal rod to keep it straight). Now add new spring and reassemble.

Any questions?
