What are Graves Slide Stops? What do they do and what are the benefits?

Yeah, that is a good question.   GreyR1 05-25-2003, 07:23 PM
I'd like to know too. gb506 05-25-2003, 08:57 PM Originally posted by GreyR1

I believe this is a correct analysis of the issue, but I could be wrong. Hopefully others will chime in if they see an error.
The slide stops hold the slides in your throttle bodies open all of the time. Normally the slides will open and close based on the amount of vacuum generated in the induction system. The farther the slides are opened the more air is allowed into the engine, which is desirable, obviously. But the system can be thrown out of whack when you install an aftermarket airbox due to the increased airflow (and pressure) in the box. The system wants to see the types of pressure levels generated by the stock airbox, but it doesn't, because more air is being pushed into the new box.
If you do not compensate for the increased pressure somehow, the slides MAY not operate correctly. They may not open all of the way, or they might close altogether when pressure differentials become too great, like when you're going very fast.
One fix is to ensure that there IS proper compensation by equalizing pressure between the throttle bodies and the airbox, pre-filter. People do this all of the time using the existing, stock vacuum hoses. This is what I did with my BoxR, with excellent results.
The other way would be to simply hold the slides open all the time with slide stops.
The downside to installing slide stops is that you may lose some of the qualities of the excellent Yamaha FI system, such as carb-like smoothness and lack of snatchy, on-off throttle feel that you get with Suzuki or other FI systems. 60" PSB R1 05-27-2003, 08:47 PM The main reason for slide stops is throttle response. It basically turns your throttle boddies into Flatsides. When you whack the throttle the slides have to move out of the way before air can get to the butterflies in the throttle bodies. By locking the slides open you eliminate this step. Giving quicker throttle resonse. But you'll need to adjust the map if you do this. Hope that helps! | |
