Wrecked the R1

Well I laid the R1 down about two hours ago. Luckily I had all of my gear on so I wasn't hurt too bad. I just have some road rash on the knee, elbow, ankle, and wrist. I was doing a second gear standup and had a car pull right out in front of me. I set it down and started to slow down, but not in time. I was coming up on the car pretty fast and locked the front up. The bike started wobbling uncontrollably. I laid it down at approximately 50 mph, the bike slid, hit a curb and stopped. I slid most of the way. The f***in car didn't even stop. Luckily there were some other young guys in a truck passing by. They helped me load up the bike in the back of their truck and get out of there ASAP. The whole front wheel shattered! I think the forks may be bent. The front rotors are bent. Pretty much all of the plastic on the bike is shattered. The Micron slip-on creased like a soda can. From the looks of it, the entire frame is undamaged. I don’t think that it's going to take much to fix it. Looks like I am going to have to repaint it again, and get some new wheels too. Everyone, please be careful out there. These are big bikes with a lot of power. Things can get out of hand very quickly. I will post some pictures tomorrow. Jeremy

Damn man! Beautiful bike. I wish you both a quick recovery. I'm not even going to get into the stunting on public streets with traffic as you don't need to hear it. Good luck.

there is a set of 02 forks and tripple clamps on the for sale section for $300/obo right now.. you might buy those and then swap them on. (you can upgrade to 02 forks as long as you have the 02 tripples too). sorry to hear about your crash.. i had a lady pruposely pull in front of me while in a wheelie a few months back (Trying to cash in on insurance or something) and it was bad times.. luckily i got stopped in time (like a foot away from her door, doing a rolling stoppie haha).

That is one of the best looking R1's I have seen in a long time. Hate that happened, but glad to hear you are ok.

That makes me want to cry. I remember seeing your bike and wanting to get mine painted like it but the guy wanted too much money for it. Hope you get yours up and running soon!

Hate to see that happen to you, that is a great looking paint scheme you got there.

Thanks for all of the compliments. This way it just pushes me to redo the bike even better. I think I am going to go for an even wilder paint sceme. Because I cleared over all of the graphics, it's going to be hard to repair the fairings and cowls. So I think I am just going to ditch them and get new ones. adamgeek- Thanks, but I just ordered a new set of Ohlins last night. I was thinking of getting some new Attack Triple Clamps. Any feedback on these? Here are a couple of pictures of me-

Ankle- Like I said before, thank God I had all of my gear on. These are from wearing jeans. I was able to roll most of the way, but when you slid this is what happens. No more wheelies for me, at least for awhile. I am going to go take pictures of the bike now. I will post them soon...

Well just went and looked at the bike after our escapade to load it in the back of the truck and leave before police arrived (6 point careless driving just for laying the bike down). I really didn't have a chance to look at it that good yesterday. It looks like I was able to slow it down significantly before it went down. I am gauging this off of the damage and "slide" marks on the fairings. The front wheel/rim took most of the impact. When the bike was sliding it went nose first into a three foot tall median. Looks like I will need new forks, wheels, left lower fairing, right upper fairing, rear cowl, rotors, exhaust, jacket, and helmet. Anyways, here are the pics... This is the right rear cowl.

I was also running through what happened last night in my head. I think that if I had installed a steering damper I could have recovered from the slapper. The bike went from side to side 8-10 times before it went down. Round two I will have a Scott's Rotary Damper!

Shit that will buff right out.

Nope. If I am able to keep these fairings I will have to sand them all down and reshoot everything. Because I clearcoated over the graphics, that is the only option I have. I guess that is the downside of clearing them.

Feel sorry for you! That is one f*****g cool bike I must say... Damn! Why aren´t you guys over there insured? In Denmark that would cost at least 10 grand repair at the local dealer! In Denmark i am paying 700 USD $$ for insurance which covers everything both on my bike and on those i hit. If i use the insurance i myself must pay the first 600 USD, the rest is paid buy the incurance company. Why bother with repairing at home?

I do have insurance. It's just not worth dealing with them for something like this. I also own my own import shop so I can get most of the parts and supplies at wholesale or jobber pricing. I also do all the work on my bike. The paint job that is on there now, I did. All of the polishing, I did. So it's just easier for me to do it since I have the know how. I am thinking it should be about $5000 if you count all of the new parts; Ohlins suspension, Micron Serpent Headers, Exhaust, Wheels, Rotors, Farings, and Paint. I should be back within a month.

Looking forward to see it again, what color will you paint it in this time? Can you give me some advice on how to make a good paint job? What kind of pistol, how many layers of paint? Several thin layers or how? Where to start, from above and down? I have never done it before, but i have some old parts i would like to make look good again...

I have never done it before, but i have some old parts i would like to make look good again... You should go to a body shop and ask if you can watch the painter. This is how I learned all of the basics. He taught me what to look for and what to do in certain situations. There may be some good books out there, I just don't know of any. I just have a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) Gravity Feed Gun. I usually set the gun to spray between 10-15 psi. You will need a good compressor to make sure you always have enough air behind the gun. You can start where ever you want. The key is consistency and steadiness. I needed 3-4 coats of the silver to cover the blue. Then I applied a thin coat of clear, applied the graphics, and then shot 3 more coats of clear. After that dried I wet sanded everything to get rid of the lines of the graphics and then reshot everything with another 1-2 coats of clear. Just mess around with some old parts, you will get the hang of it. Originally posted by R6nOOb Do you have a homepage so I can see some of your products? Don't have a site; we aren't catering to the e-commerce market. Sorry.

Well just got the Ohlins in on Wednesday. I have the new fairings coming in next week; I will be able to start painting next weekend. I am awaiting the "ok" from Dynomite for shipping my swing arm and header to be modified for the GP-500 kit. It should be about four weeks for this modification. I still need to order new rear sets, bar ends, wheels, and rotors. This project is coming along quite quickly. I will post more pictures as I get further along...

Its kinda fun putting your bike back together, i stacked mine at the start of the year, and i learnt so much about it as i did all the work myself (except for spraying obviously), good luck with the repairs dude, i wish you a quick recovery!!

I agree that its fun putting it back together, but this is the second time and I only have 1100 miles on the bike. That's the part that sucks. The weather has been so nice here in Colorado since the accident, I really want to ride here soon. The lesson learned; no stunting on the streets. I am also going to drop the engine and components tomorrow to chrome the frame. My frame turned out really good but it's too much to maintain. I love the chrome for this reason. I also received the "OK" from Dynomite for the swingarm and header modifications. I will be shipping mine out on Monday. It should take "less than 28 days" to be in my hands, back from England, with the GP-500 Undertail Exhaust and the modified accessories. I am excited! I am also going to have Color Zone Designs do some paint work on the repaired fairings. I can do solid color, but airbrushing is another story. So those will also go out on Monday. More pictures tomorrow...
