Ronin R1 05-29-2003, 12:45 AM I'm planning on riding the Pines to Palms Hwy this Sat. if anyone wants to join me. It is a long ride with some good twisty bits. I haven't decided on a route yet but it looks like the 74 will be the main road for most of it.
It looks like this...
Ronin R1 05-29-2003, 12:46 AM Depending on who's coming we can meet in Tustin, San Juan Capistrano, Temecula, or elsewhere...
R1_Demon 05-29-2003, 12:47 AM :( Sorry, can't make it this Saturday. However, hopefully next time I can go with ya!
Viking 05-30-2003, 12:57 AM What time are you thinking of going? I don't know about going the whole way in the heat, but if it's early enough I should be available. Let me know.
Ronin R1 05-30-2003, 07:49 AM I plan on leaving San Clemente sometime between 7 and 8 AM.
Borealus 05-30-2003, 09:17 PM I would like to join you but i already have a ride scheduled for sunday and saturday i'm booked. Maybe next time though.
BRBJackson 05-31-2003, 08:12 AM Cr*p, I'm tied up today, but how about tomorrow? Assuming you've still got legs after the Palms to Pines long-a$$ ride, that is :D Fantastic road, you're gonna have a blast
Ronin R1 05-31-2003, 08:22 AM I'll be out tomorrow as well. Let me know.
Ronin R1 05-31-2003, 03:09 PM OMG! You gotta know you are in for a treat when the sign says "Steep grades and winding roads next 44 mi."
This road has something for everyone with little traffic; plenty of places to pass safely if you do encuonter a cage; twisties, flat straights, sweepers, no cops, and only a handful of other bikers (I was the only sportbike up there). The temp was good all the way (wearing full leathers) until I dropped down into the valley at Palm Desert. It was a great ride. If I had more time I would have checked out some other roads but those will have to wait.
R1_Demon 05-31-2003, 05:10 PM Sounds cool. You'll have to let me know how to take that ride sometime so I can do it. Sounds like a blast.
A few guys and I did Ortega today. Actually came down from Jamboree through Santiago Canyon for a warm up and then hit Ortega all the way through and then back. Was fun. :) But a bit warm up there with a leather jacket on. Hehehehe...
Ronin R1 05-31-2003, 05:11 PM I started my ride with Ortega.
R1_Demon 05-31-2003, 05:27 PM Hehehe...ya, but I have NO clue on where to go from there. Hehehe...
Today we took Ortega to the end where it T's and then made a left, went into that small town to the Jack In The Box, ate there and then turned around and went back up. That's about my extent of going anywhere from Ortega. Hehehe...sad but true.
Viking 06-04-2003, 03:50 PM I did the Palms to Pines ride on Monday. Took Ortega (Hwy 74) from San Juan Capistrano to Palm Desert and then back again. Not sure how you did it Ronin with full leathers, as I thought was going to pass out a few times. It was 108 in Palm Springs and I was still sweating my ass off wearing my Sonic Air jacket. Anyway it's a nice ride... check it out:
Viking 06-04-2003, 03:55 PM ...
Viking 06-04-2003, 04:04 PM more desert
Viking 06-04-2003, 04:07 PM Lake Hemet
R1_Demon 06-04-2003, 05:26 PM Wholly crap..was that first pic Ortega? or where?
Cool lookin' pics though...thanks for sharing. Looks like a fun ride.
That's what I'm worried about in Vegas for the Convention. The damn heat. It's already up in the triple digits during the day now...just wait two more weeks...UGGGHHHH...
Viking 06-04-2003, 07:05 PM The first picture is still Highway 74 just before you hit Palm Desert. It's a nice road, but it was my first time on it so I took it pretty easy. The cops must have been bored on a Monday morning because I saw 6 on my way out there and 4 of em were hiding and using radar. I'm up for it again if anyone wants to go. We would need to leave pretty early due to the heat though.
R1_Demon 06-04-2003, 11:28 PM Ohhh, I never went that far out.
I've only taken 74 (Ortega) from I-5 to I-15...never knew it extended past that. I always thought it ended at I-15.
Hmm...sounds cool though!

If you're going there, instead of going staying on 74 after you cross over the 15, take the 15 South for 10min and take 215 North. You'll hit the 74 again after another 10 minutes.
This allows you to go around the 30 minute city traffic ride and get you to downtown Hemet sooner.
Watch out for 3-4 cops after the Lake Hemet area; they normally hang out on the Fire Station and the mini grocery store.
When you come down from 7-level, you can continue on 74 and make a left when you hit downtown Palm Springs, ...for some refreshments at the 'River Mall' area(ie Yardhouse, Ice cream , Starbucks, etc.)
