Are there any aftermarket air filters that have performance gains? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks mates.

SINSHADY 06-01-2003, 03:17 PM I just put a K&N air filter on my 02 R1 it seems to have a little more balls. But it is not a huge difference I am at 4500 FT elevation. gb506 06-01-2003, 04:23 PM Originally posted by KevinC

Most people that have dyno'd their bikes back-to-back w/ different filters have shown no appreciable difference in performance between them. However, that is not to say that a K&N or BMC would not give you more juice since the PCIII mapping would need to be adjusted for airflow, and who's got enough time on the dyno to tell?
Many say they get more airflow out of the stock filter compared to the K&N. I have a K&N and I would beg to differ. You can blow through the dang things and tell that's false. Whether the motor needs or can use the increased flow is in question, though.
Anyway, the best advantage to a K&N or BMC is that you can clean them. And if you decide to install a ram air system, a reusable filter is a requirement. Either that or an investment in a large number of OEM throw-away filters...
I took this pic today when I cleaned my filter and changed my oil. This is 800 miles worth of dirt, pollen, and critters...
Notice the pollen in the grooves from the trees and whatnot this time of year.

LowlifePlayer 06-01-2003, 04:42 PM I am at sea level, and when I changed to a K&N I did notice some differences, but not horse power differences. For example, my bike seems more civilized(meaning that it runs smoother). I also noticed less vibration. Lastly, it may be my ears, but I think I am getting a slightly more throaty sound out of my Hindle. LowlifePlayer 06-01-2003, 04:44 PM gb506
that is the most dirty filter I have ever seen in my life.
I ran the stock filter for 10K and did not have 5% of the dirt yours has.
Did you do some sort of air box mod???? Skeeter 06-01-2003, 04:55 PM GB 506,
Is that after only 800 miles of riding? Man, that air filter is very
dirty. You guys must have some harsh riding conditions up there
in Wi. I've always heard you will need to remap with a K&N air
filter because you are changing the air flow into the bike from
stock. Then again, it might be worth it if you can just clean the
K&N filter and resuse it. I'm sure you would save money in the
long run. gb506 06-01-2003, 04:58 PM Originally posted by LowlifePlayer

Yeah, a BoxR. Ain't nothin' in between nature and the filter... Here's a pic of the intake-side of the filter, pre-cleaning... Clean as a whistle...

I need to correct that. It was probably about 1200 miles, not 800. I replaced my rear tore 800 miles ago, got em mixed up. But, yeah, if you've got a ram air box, it'll get dirty quick. martinc 06-01-2003, 05:01 PM .......at least you know that there is some air getting there.....

Hey Martin:
Check this out, you can see on the lower sides of the ram air snout that pollen has stuck to the inside in two spots - one further forward than the other. This is a unique look at how air flows into the BoxR, and where the dead spots are as air travels up the snout towards the filter. It looks like the air actually snakes around like the ebbs and flows of a river as it goes up the snout. Kinda interesting.
http://homepage.mac.com/brickl/flow-1.jpg randomwalk101 08-06-2003, 02:24 PM you guys must be talking about the older style stock air filter for R1 or R6? Because the 2003 R6 stock filter is re-useable/cleanable just like the K&N. Also, the 03 R6 stock air filter uses oil just like K&N. vagab0nd 08-19-2003, 09:14 AM don't feel too bad about the dirt in your filter, I have had worse though not much, and I had to dump my bike into a pile of earth first to do so lol, damn construction out of the blue around corners and hidden from plain view | |
