When I purchased my 02 R1 they signed me up for a free fastrack course. They just called and scheduled me for Willow Springs on May 17th. I am very excited and was wondering if I should keep my stock tires on. By that time I should have at least 2500 mi.. Does anyone have any other riding suggestions or tips as this will be my first time on a track. I have 11 years riding experience and this is my 4th sportbike. I have read "Twist of the Wrist 1 and 2 and The soft Science of roadracing by Keith Code. Did anyone else get the free trackday when they got their bike? :thumbup

They gave me nothing free :cryin Bastards !! Anyway, I'm going to my first track day myself on June 1 here is some advise that Oldog gave me, so I thought i'd pass it on :thumbup Originally posted by Olddog You might find this amusing;) If you are racing and show up with new kit ( leathers, gloves, you look MARVELOUS  ) most racers will walk the track, get to the dirt outside a turn, and rub some into their Virgin , pretty leathers;) Yeah, yeah, it's stupid and superstitious.......................... but most guys do it:p Have fun Good luck on your track day!! Let us know how it goes

Yep, just waiting for the official invitation. I figure between that and the already-included undertail+hugger, I saved like $1000 on my R1 purchase!

i try to do 1 track day a month. have gone with hyperclub, and club desmo to willow springs big track.... it is an experience that all sportbike riders should have. keep one thing in mind: ride within yourself. do not try to keep up with others your first go-around... enjoy, joe

Thanks for the info guys (or gals). I also need to get a full set of leathers since I found out that they require a full circumference zipper on 2 piece leathers. Oh well Cycle Gear is havin a sale on full sets for $399. Other than that the next thing is figuring out how to haul it in my S-10. Im figurin tie downs front and rear. Should I angle it or keep it sraight. I dont have the "pop chocks". Thanks for your suggestions.:thumbup

Hey I just noticed some of you guys are from So. Cal. That would be cool if you got Willow on the 17th of next month also. We could meet up and compare notes.

Jboat: Got the "track pass" as well.. but from what the pass says its for "Fontana: California Speedway"!!!! I would be pretty upset if they tried to jip me from a California Speedway trackday to a WillowSprings track day.... As for your first track day experience im sure you will have a BLAST!!!!! My first trackday was about a 8-9 months ago at STreets of Willows and i learned a sh!t load about myself as well as my bike (I had a 929 back then). I personally would get some race-take off's to use on the tracks, but since this is your first trackday your stock tires shouldnt be a problem. The 190s will make your bike turn in slower though compared to the 180s. A few things you should remember is : RELAX!!!!(keep your grip nice and relaxed, as well as your upper body) its going to be hard though going into turn 8 at over 120mphs!! hahahah .. and make sure to look into the turns. there are NO blind turns at Willow Springs. You will notice how important it is to look into the turns if you havent already at the tracks. Hmmm... what else... pretty much a lot of what you read in Twist of the Wrist should be applied here. Dont ride over your limits, it;s fine to push yourself trying to keep up with someone but its a entirely different story when your trying to keep up with someone like Chuck Graves!! (just make sure you know who your tring to pace with/ if they are within reason the same speed as you). Throughout the day you will learn more and more about the track/race lines and yourself. There will be SOO many things that will be going through your mind, but try and focus on only a few at a time and work your way from that. If it comes all natural and your getting alil bored here are some pointers about the turns. (This is just my personal experience and thoughts. Take it as it is, NOT as the TRUTH but as an Opinion). Im not an expert at this track, but do have a decent amount of experience at this track. Turn 1: the ONLY Text book 90 degree turn on the track. *You will probably be breaking A LOT earlier and realizing that you didnt have to break that soon.... but thats perfectly normal. Using the breaking cones and slowly work your way down to the last break coning cone. People will tell you you should ride within the apex of turn and the patch on the ground as a beginner at this track (you will know what im talking about when u get out there),its the smoothest part of the track. I used to try and hit that area all the time, but since ive gotten faster i noticed it wasnt too important to hit that area.* Turn 2: Is a nice double Apex Bowl... pretty much 2 ways of taking it. cutting it into 2 turns: (coming into the turn setup wide and come in, then when you hit apex 2 cut in again). taking it at 1 turn: hug the inside all the way around. (From race school, was told if your not coming out of turn 2 wide your taking that turn too slow!! lol) Turn 3: Watch out A LOT of people will slam on their breaks really hard here. Uphill left hander, proably the tightest turn on the track. Turn 4: Double Apex Turn to the right. The "racer school"way is to cut it into 2 turns, pretty much looking like a triangle ( /\ ). not going to try and discuss this one too much..... there are too many ways to take this turn, and i still havent found "that right line" myself yet. hahaah Turn 5: Sacrifice turn to setup the back straight. Watch out as well... A LOT of people will be on the breaks early, cuz its a downhill left hander. Turn 6: There will be a small "hill" you go over. Try and hit the hill on the inside near the apex markers (if your on a bigger bike you can do this, under 500 different line). Try and get the bike up as soon as possible out of turn 5 so you can go over turn 6 with your bike straight up and get the best drive possible on the back straights. Turn 7: what turn?? you will know what i mean when u see it... Turn 8: :rock Fun turn...but also the scarest turn. Fastest turn on the track. (fast guys from what i hear can take this at over 140mphs especially on a liter bike). Dont really think there's much to it except dont wet your pants!! lol.. Turn 9: a Hooking right onto the front straight. Watch out your going pretty fast out of turn 8. Setting up this turn out of turn 8 go wide and cut into the apex. Coming out of the turn you will probably be running alittle wide, if your going fast enough. ** Not a very good description sorry, but its the best i could do at this time...Hope this helps. I've come to love Willow Springs. First time out there i wasnt too fond of it cuz i was pretty much scared sh!tless with the extreme speeds the track was at compared to Streets of Willow which had been the only track i had been to at the time... but after learning more and more, its a pretty dayam good race track.

They originally gave me the option of going to California Speedway in Fontana. I chose Willow springs because they said it was sooner and closer to where I live. I dont know enough to know the difference. I just remember that Motorcyclist usually uses them to test new bikes and I thought it would be cool to ride on the track that I always read about. After that I will go to Thunder Hill. For what its worth my rear tire is all the way to the edge. My front has about 3/4" on the edge. This is alot less of a strip than I had on My 98YZF600 with D207s. I hope to do well. By the way I got a sweet deal on a Frank Thomas full suit for $329. It fits and matches perfectly. I cant freakin wait!:thumbup

Hey guys, I bought my '02 R1 from Champion Yamaha in Southern California and didn't hear anything about a free track day. Anyone know if this is this something offered by only select dealerships? thanks, xacto

That was the best adrenaline rush yet. I hit 152mph on the straight away after turn 9. My buddy timed me from a 1:58 to my best time of 1:50 (slow) but not bad for a first timer. Were any of you guys there. I rode with the super street group and was able to pass quite a few people. The Ducks (748) were by far the easiest guys to roost. My instructor was Thad Wolff I guess he's an ex racer. My tires are completely scrubbed in with little balls all around the edges. Even the front one is like that. I have gained great confidence. The 208s hung very well with really good feedback and grip. I am suprised based on what I have read here. Anyways Thunderhill here I come. L8R.:rock
