I recently did mine; it was noisy and annoying. I took it out from the left side, cleaned the bearing surfaces, applied some high heat grease(1100 F, looks like gooey copper), and reassembled. I also greased the threads and the washers as I put it back together. I lube the cables more often because the heat of the exhaust dries out the ends quick.
Seemed to do the trick.

I prefer to use a dry type lube with graphite as it does not thicken and create friction which slows the servo down, also don't overtighten the cables or the exup will be sluggish also. On 02-03 exups bend the ends of the spring that goes to both shafts so they are parallel with each other to reduce drag.

What is the exup for? While riding, how can you tell when it's being used?

What happens if you overtighten the cables?

I was doing a tune-up on my bike a couple of nights ago and came across the chapter on adjusting the cables for this.

I tightned them so that both cables moved maybe a centimeter or two in either direction, when shaking the cable with my fingers.

My R1 has 24k miles on it, is cleaning the exup something that's also necessary?
