Chatterbox FRS channel compatibilities

Hey guys.... I just found some info regarding the Chatterboxes (HJC-FRS Multi-Sport+ model) They run on FRS (Family Radio Service) frequencies. Not CB frequencies (I wasn't sure, so I checked into it today). Anyway, FRS channels (there are 14 total) are the ones used by 2 way radios. So, below is the info on which FRS channel the Chatterbox channels run on. So, if you have a friend in a car or what not and he has a 2 way radio with these 2 channels, he can still talk to you on your Chatterbox. Kinda cool. :) Channel 1 on the Chatterbox is the FRS Channel 1 (462.5625 MHz). Channel 2 on the Chatterbox is the FRS Channel 8 (467.5625 MHz). So there ya go. So if you have a friend that has a 2 way radio with all 14 channels he can hear/talk you on channel 1 or 8 depending on which channel you're using on your Chatterbox (1 or 2). Just figured I'd through that little tidbit of info out there in case anyone wanted to know. Again, this is info for the 2 channel Chatterbox HJC-FRS Multi-Sport+ model only. I don't know about the GMRS and the X1 & X2 models. Some of us are poor and can only afford the 2 channels. Hehehe.. Oh ya, in case you wanted to know also, here are the compatibilities between actual Chatterboxes themselves: For the HJC-FRS Multi-Sport + Channel 1 is the following on these other units: FRS X2 & GMRS X1 = Channel 1. 00 Channel 2 is the following on this other units: FRS X2 = Channel 8. 00 Hope that wasn't confusing! Gavin and I bought the X1 Chaterbox before the vegas trip, worked like a champ once we got the batteries fully charged and i havent had a problem since. the only thing about them is i wouldnt recomend the "hot mike" function, way too much wind noise, either that or you have to scream at the thing to get it to activate. earplugs were a plus as well when using it. hope that helps

Hyfi, I'm still sorting my GMRS X1 out. Are you saying that you installed the PTT switch to bypass the VOX function? What helmet are you using? Thanks man, and THX Mat for the mucho useful info, bro :thumbup

Anytime guys....just figured that since I was curious on the info that someone else might be too, so figured what the hell and posted it. :) Glad to see it's come to some use. I just got the standard FRS Chatterbox yesterday, but it seems cool so far. Talked to some kid and his dad yesterday while sitting in the house trying it out. Hehehe...seemed to work great and seems plenty loud. I actually mounted my speakers under the fabric on my Shoei RF-900. Works pretty well, but my ears have to get used to having something in those "slots" (in the helmet) now. Normally I'm going to keep my mic sensitivity on Lo (basically the mic is off) and when I need to talk, then I'll turn it up to talk. When I did try to keep the VOX on 1/2 way or so, it would pickup the engine and start to transmit (can hear it through the speakers), so it's just easier to keep it on Lo and then turn it when I want to transmit. :) Cuts down on unwanted transmissions and I don't have to mount the PTT button.

Thanks man, and THX Mat for the mucho useful info, bro :thumbup We didn't actually install the PTT switch, we just kept the VOX turned to the bare minimum and used the PTT switch on the base unit itself. I did try mounting the PTT switch to the left grip once but it was annoying as hell, i couldnt fit my hand on the grips comfortably and the wire was bugging me as well. So i pulled it off at the first stop light. I am going to play with it though and see if i can figure out a better wat to set it up. I'm wearing an Arai Quantum/f helmet didnt have any trouble mounting the base or anything. Oh one thing i did notice is that when we did try to use the VOX it was transmitting off and on in about 5 second intervals even with the bike shut off and not much background noise. Gavin had the same problem....if anyone knows a good way to fix the VOX feature holler at me PLEASE ! it would be so much easier to use that if it functioned properly.

Hey there.... VOX will usually do that (the going on and off) if it is set at too high of mic sensitivity. So, it's picking up even the slightest noise even if you have it set kind of low on the sensitivity. If it keeps clicking on and off, I would suggest turning the knob all the way to the Lo setting. THen you shouldn't have that problem at all because it is supposed to basically turn "off" the mic at that point. However, if you have it set to Lo and your mic (not someone else's that has their chatterbox on) still picks up, then you might want to call Chatterbox about that. On any of their units if you set the mic sens knob down to Lo, then it is not supposed to pick up anything unless you probably scream like a banshee into the mic and even then I don't think so. However, if you are hearing it click on and off in your helmet, it might not be yours. Sometimes it's someone else or a transmission that is just about 2 miles out (or whatever the distance your unit can go) and it's barely getting through the squelch on your Chatterbox, so it will sound like it's yours transmitting on and off but in reality it's a broken up transmission that you are only catching parts of because it's too far away for your unit to get. Just trying to help out. I was into CB's for a long time and all the principals are the same, just the frequencies are different for FRS. :) Cya

My Multi-Sport just got in today. Now I need to run over to Best Buy and get a couple of 2 way radios for my buddies in their cars. It's such a pain when I'm on my bike and 3-5 friends are all in the car together........... it feels kinda lonely sometimes :( ......... I want someone to talk to :) Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind.

I went out and bought a couple of Motorola 2 way radios for my buddies. I can hear them just fine but it seems as if that's all it can do. I'm not transmitting anything out. I can hear myself in my speakers but no one else can hear me............. what's up??

Make sure their "subnet" is on 0 Or you won't be able to talk. I had the same problem with a friend. He was on channel 1 and so was I. I could hear him (he was in his car on a 2 way) but when I transmitted, he couldn't hear me. I pulled up to the light next to him and told him that his subnet has to be on 0 (zero) and once he did that and I talked he could hear me. So they have to be on channel 1 and subnet zero (0). Try and and see if it works. Plus, make sure they are within 2 miles of you and that your chatterbox is fully charged. :)
