Did the AMA course at California Speedway on Saturday, and had a complete blast. This is the best track in SoCal by far, with the best facilities and glass-smooth asphalt. We're planning on doing Saturday 8/30 with Fastrack Riders again. If anybody from the Dragon Squadron is interested in riding on this awesome track, and wants to save some cash, PM me. We're paying $175 a head instead of the regular $210. If you want to join us, let me know soon :fact

Do I gotta have full leathers? Anything special I gotta have on my bike? I'de love to go to the track, let me know

07-29-2003, 02:17 PM
EDucla-R1, Yes, you would need full leathers, but I know you can rent them at the track for that day. I think it's $50 a day to rent the full leathers, but confirm that with BRBJackson, I believe he knows for sure. Other than that, I think you have to take your mirrors off your bike and tape up your headlights. That's just what I've heard from others that have gone already. I was hopin' to make this one, but I can't cuz I'll be in Austin, TX for work that weekend. Sucks cuz Bill knows I wanted to go to this one. :cryin Seeeee...I should have stayed unemployed. LOL :lol :lol :lol

Do they have anything for first timers? Can you run anti-freeze? Are two peice leathers OK ? Will people get pissy because I'm slow? Thanx

XT777
07-29-2003, 03:47 PM
yes you need leathers. Two piece is fine as long as they fully zip together. yes you can run antifreeze no need to drain and replace with water. you must tape off all your lights and wheel weights. there are three or four groups generally so you can ride in a group that is similar to your ability. it is a good time and a great track.

Looking forward to Fontana AMA course tomorrow! Do you have to use duc-tape or is there something with less residue for your headlights that is acceptable to use?

BRBJackson
08-29-2003, 10:25 AM
Use blue painters tape (available at Home Depot). Personally, I overlay that with duct tape afterwards. Gets me the silver look w/o the sticky mess :fact If you don't mind the blue color tho, the first layer alone works great and removes easily. See you tomorrow! BTW, there're like 15 of us pitting together, hopefully near the Fastrack tech area and office. Look for us there first. Otherwise, look for a silver '02 with no tail light assembly... that's me

Clem
08-29-2003, 10:38 AM
Thanks BRBJackson! I will get the painters tape, the blue should contrast my chrome red screen. I am coming up with a friend in a blue suburban, with a three rail trailer in tow. What about gas? Should I bring gas, or can you acquire extra gas at the track?

BRBJackson
08-29-2003, 11:06 AM
I think you can get racing gas at the track, but it's expensive as hell and totally useless unless you've got a race-prepped engine. If you can, go to a local bike shop and pick up a 5 gallon plastic jug. I guarantee you'll need to refill at least once. Worst case, there's a couple of gas stations along Cherry where you can get refilled, but you'd be riding your non-street legal bike there

Clem
08-29-2003, 11:31 AM
Thanks BRB, I was contemplating one of those fast fill plastic 5 gallon jugs before, but I thought I heard that they had been banned at the track or something to that effect. Not sure about that, just something I thought I heard. I will pick one up and bring gas with.

All I can say is BAAAADDDD A$$$$$$. I really had a great time today. Unfortunately I wasn't riding (ya, I was the only biatch that wasn't! LOL :lol :lol ), but I had a great time taking some digital pics & digital 8 video of today's track day. I WILL be attending the infield course (baring everyone else is going too) when it comes around at the end of September! I didn't even ride and I'm freakin' hooked! I also wanted to say thanks to Bill (BRBJackson), XT777 (sorry bro, forgot your name...I'm not good at names. :( ), and a bunch of the esportbike.com riders too. I had a blast and learned a lot just from hearing their feedback from the track and setting up lines and such. It really was a blast and I can't wait to ride with those guys on the track (well, once I get fast enough, anyway! LOL :lol :lol :yesnod ) Anyway, it was a blast and for those of you that don't go...you might want to reconsider your thinking. It's pretty damn cool! Thanks again guys! Mat PS OH ya, one other small detail I forgot and left out....Both BRBJackson and XT777 are FARKIN' FAST AS HELL!!!! Don't let them fool ya....I've got it on video. :P

It was a pleasant day out at the track on Sat. Met some people from the board (Matt and Bill). Thanks for posting the Pic Bill...too bad it is not me...I was number forty two...but then i immagine it is hard to see my number from behind. :P It was great that they had so many people show to pay for track rental but it sucked because i felt like i was unable to get any good runs in with all the congestion on the track...on the other hand...it is a lot of fun passing people. Over all it was nice (but sort of laid back) day at the track and i can't wait to do the next one out there. Matt, I would like to see some of the video. If you ever get it in to an mpeg1 or wma file post it up. XT777

Yeah, for a sec I thought it was you, but then I remembered what you were wearing, so please :2bitchsla me... Anyway, if you want to look for pics of yourself, you've got 2 options: HERE (http://www.sportbikes.com/photo/showgallery.php?cat=589) or HERE (although you'll have to wait a week or so for our sessions to show up...) (http://www.powersportsphotography.com/BrowseEvents/EventGalleries.html) Great meeting you at the track, bro :hellobye Next time we'll have to grid up together :D

Sorry I didn't find you guys (Bill XT), but I made it and also had a great time! I was kept pretty busy with the Safety School for most of the day (as there was class after each track session). I was able to go to level 1 after a couple of sessions and wick it up pretty good. I think my best lap was a 1:52 (though there was a ton of traffic and I wasn't allowed to pass except on straights). It was outstanding overall. The track is fantastic! I am also returning in September (where I can hopefully hook up with you guys). Thanks for the tip though, I really enjoyed it.

Hey Clem. Did you enjoy wearing that BEAUTIFUL, LOVELY green shirt? I'll bet you asked them if you could take it home, didn't ya? :crash :lol :lol Well, sorry we didn't get to meet ya man. I was watching level I at one point (I wasn't riding on Sat), so I probaly did see ya. I think there were a couple of black/red R1's out there..but hard to tell from up top. Anyway, if you come out to the infield one on the 27th of Sept, you'll probably find me there, cuz it'll be my first one. :) However, then I get to inherit your pretty lime green shirt. LOL :p By the way...Bill...who took all of those pics on esportbike? Damn those are close and came out good. I'll have to check them out tonight as I'm leaving to ride to the Rock Store right now. They definitely had a telephoto lens. I need to get that so I can take some great shots like that....but it's allllll moneyyyyyyy. :( Cya, Mat

BRBJackson
09-01-2003, 08:54 AM
By the way...Bill...who took all of those pics on esportbike? That'd be Mike, the site owner who was handing out shirts and stickers in the garage. Clem, sorry we didn't hook up, but as Mat mentioned, we're coming back out for the infield course on the 27th. Discounts are being worked on at this point. Hope to see you there :yesnod

Clem
09-02-2003, 09:08 AM
Yeah, I am in for the 27th, just let me know what the plan of attack is. Those green shirts were awful, though they helped the instructors find you on the track for tips (very good). I haven't even checked out any pictures, cause I think I will have the green shirt on in every one. I didn't see the photographer in the infield of turns 5 and 6 except early in the day when I was on team green. They'll let you lose the green shirt early in the day after they start to recognize you by bike and riding style Mat. I think I should probably go with group 2 on the 27th (you guys were mostly in group 2 this last time, correct?). My buddy, who helped me pit on Saturday, is going to do the Safety School/1 on the 27th on his FJR1300, so add him to the count as well please Bill. It was a gas! They are right, you will never look at canyon riding the same again.

When you are looking at the pictures, take a look at the pictures of Tim Carrithers of Motorcyclist as he is helped in to the ambulance. He T-boned someone in turn 1 I think. He was definately part of group 3 (which had the most crashes for some reason).

BRBJackson
09-02-2003, 10:34 AM
Yeah, I was just BS'ing with Tim before he went out for that session, telling him he should take his pit bike out for a spin and save the 999 some wear and tear. Bet Ducati USA's pissed off at this point :rant

I think i pitted with you and didn't know it. Were you in #79. Black and red r1? I was on the silver r1 and my friend had the RC51 with the race skins on it? Our girls were there? Was that you? I am probalbly in for the 27th...Are we going to try and put together a GROUP OF SIX? Group of Six thread for Sept. 27th at Fontana: http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=52696

I can't remember what garage # I was in, but there was a silver R1 and I think an RC51, with two guys and two girls (and the guys were even getting massages between sessions-lucky them). It was the last garage on the north side of the paddock building which was one building east of the tech. inspection area. My buddy was there in an Orange t-shirt (no bike) mostly just hanging around (or timing my laps on his watch). There was another guy in the same garage who had a Gixxer 1000 and was running in level IV. If so, that was me. Black R1, Z leathers, Clem insignia on the front. I am definately in on the 27th. My buddy will want to come as well (he will do the SS, and I can run in level II).

Hey there Clem, Was it truly worth it to take the safety class? What did they go over/teach you? Only reason I ask that is because I know I should honestly go to the class on the 27th (my first track day), but I really don't think I'm going to have the extra $95 or whatever it is to attend the class. I'd hate to miss out on the track day on the 27th cuz I don't have the money for the safety class. :( That would suck. So, I'm trying to see how vital it is and since you just took it (same day I was there, but obviously not riding), I thought I'd ask.

Clem
09-03-2003, 10:13 AM
The class was good as far as highlighting all of the flags and what they mean, etc. for me (having never been). It was also good relative to providing some key points/ideas that helped me in a few areas (cornering, late apex vs. early apex and how to set up for a pass). But other than that, I was pretty much gone and out of sight and mind for the instructors almost right away. No one passed me from level I either, so the Safety School is somewhat a judgement call. Fastrackriders thanked us for being honest that we had never been to the track before, and pointed out the many riders in level I, who we were passing on a regular basis, as evidence that not everyone was as forthcoming (just letting you know that they brought this up). They had a hand out, which I thought was really concise and to the point (which I have a copy of).

Hey Clem, Thanks for the info. They also went over the flags in the "riders meeting" just before everyone took the track at the beginning of the day. I just don't think I'll have the cash for the safety class. Otherwise I really would take it. However, I really don't think I'll be passing anyone unless they are REALLLLLY slow. Most likely everyone will be passing me. :( However, if I get to pass just one person that day (not due to a crash either! LOL) then I'll be a happy camper! :yesnod :lol :lol :crash However, we'll see what goes. My main focus actually isn't to pass anyone. I just want to be safe (NO crashes), have tons of fun and ride my own race, so to speak. If I can accomplish that, I don't care if I'm the fastest or slowest on the track in Level 1, because it will be all worth while. Oh ya, and I'm sure I'll look to you all for advice on what I'm doing wrong. LOL :p
