Hey,

Educate me on this, please. I don't race, just street-ride. What would be the benefit of getting an aftermarket shock on my bike?

Thanks,

Steve

The benefits on the street wouldn't be as extrememly obvious as they would on the track, but depending on how you ride, you should notice a sizeable difference.
With the Penske, for the short time I used it, I had a better feel for what was going on back there, and felt more in control. In turn, With less squat I had better grip, and was allowed to get on the gas harder and earlier without any drama.
The Penske is designed with roadracers in mind. the #8987 is their top of the line, and a big selling point is the highspeed compression adjustability. The idea behind it (it works) is that you now have the ability to tune the shock to be stiff where you want it(on smoother surfaces) and soft(harsh ripples , or sharp bumps) at the same time...w/out compromise. With most shocks with only low speed compression, you've got to pick between a soft ride and a firm ride.
The other HUGE benefit I found was the ride height adjustablilty. I found raising the rear a little made the bike turn better...quicker. Dropping it , of course would add stability, and slower steering. If you like to experiment with suspension settings this shock is a good choice, but if you want to bolt one on, and forget about it, a simpler shock is wiser.
If your stock shock is relatively new, I wouldn't recommend spending the cash yet, but as the miles go by the internals of the stockers wear and a new shock is helpful. The Penske is totally rebuildable as well. Looks sexy , too.
I bought it at Traxxion Dynamics , When I spoke to the owner about an Ohlins shock, he told me the Ohlins didn't work near as well as the Penske in R1 application. He told me the Penske "works" right out of the box. So, I spent more, but was very happy with how it felt.
By the way, I sold the bike...that's why i'm selling the shock.
sorry so long winded,
j
