: Just had the scare of my LIFE!!!!!
keep-up 08-18-2003, 06:56 PM Ok, so many of you remember that last March I looped my 02 in a 80mph wheelie. Just too damn much power and not enough control. Well the scare I received back then sliding down the pavement at 80mph is absolutely nothing compared to what I went through yesterday...........
Here's the story........
Was out with a group of 4 other guys who were all on 600s, was in the lead on a back road with no traffic that I'd only been on once before. I remembered that it was one where you could open it ALL the way up cuz it was wide open without any trees or driveways or intersecting roads for miles and you could see forever. So I take off and put the hammer down. The road was over some rolling hills and, yes, you guessed it............
In 6th gear, under full throttle, at 165 mph the front end started to come up as I crested a shallow hill...........
Holy Bananas!!!!!!!!!! I don't care how much of a STUD you are that is NOT a good thing. I'm thinking at that speed if it comes up too high, no matter how much you slam down the rear brake and shut the throttle down you're going over due to wind drag (like you see when the Formula 1 cars go airborne) and you're not gonna stop for a LONG LONG time.
Ok, at first it happened so fast that I only had time to think about releasing the throttle and thank God (with a capital "G") it came down. But it only took about 3 seconds (after looking down at the speedo = 159mph) to realize I almost died and it what would have been a horrific crash. Not too mention my buddies haulin' a$$ behind might not have had time to stop.
Lesson learned = RESPECT THE POWER AT ALL SPEEDS AND GEARS!!!
I will be much more cognizant of shallow hills under heavy acceleration in the future.
Please everyone learn from my lesson. I hope this NEVER happens to anyone......
keep-up 08-18-2003, 07:28 PM I wanna correct something I said earlier. At 165mph I couldn't have been under full acceleration although I was at full throttle. At that speed, near the top end, the acceleration is tapering off. Therefore it really didn't require much acceleration in those conditions to create a wheelie. It really is a combination of speed, suspension, acceleration, and the wavelength of the hill to create a nasty situation. Be careful out there.
The other thing is my damper kept it rock solid when it came down also. Although I bet the scientists would argue that at that speed the wheels are creating so much angular momentum or gyroscopic force to prevent a tank slapper. I don't know. Anyone had a tank slapper at over 150mph??? I've had 'em before my damper but never at that speed.
Glad you made it. This is the sort of thing we keep trying to stress to guys wanting R1's as first bikes. They can catch even riders with experience out. Take care. It can be all over in a second.
downtown 08-19-2003, 04:09 AM wooww, thats amazing, I am going out to try it. hehe. just kiddin.
Glad you made it good. R.e.s.p.e.c.t Is the name of the game, In such a powerfull bike like our 1.
Downtown.
KneeDragger77 08-19-2003, 05:19 AM wowzers, close call. That would definitely be a ball shrinker in my book.
medpilot 08-19-2003, 07:43 AM Damn how much do you weigh? I’ve been up to 175mph a few times now and the bike seems rock solid. Then again I wasn’t cresting a hill either. Sounds like you had a wild ride.:)
Wolf-R1 08-19-2003, 01:32 PM Forgive me if I sound like an ass but isn't that a no brainer that a hill, even a small one, at that speed will either get you air or a nasty wheelie?
Glad you made it out alright mang. :thumbup

I don't know how much more of this site I can take...
You guys just don't get it! Starting out on a R1 has nothing to do with it!!!!!!!!
A 600RR will do 162....you don't need a big bike to do stupid things! You bastages are making my insurance go up...and I used my half-brain long ago to realize that kind of thing might just be a little safer on the track!!!!!
No sir....I just don't get it! Any bike...at any time....will kill your arse if you are being stupid! My bro sells bikes...guys buy a Busa or Gix 1k and don't even know which is the brake and clutch.
Just can't take any more....need some time away from reading about death and mayhem and million dollar speeding tickets....
I am going to tell my ins. agent about some of you dudes on this site..maybe they will upcharge your rookie asses instead of me!

Hey Mr 39 posts!!! My riding experience includes 3 bikes, 4 years, and a few track days. I will ALWAYS be a student of motorcycle riding but I'd hardly call myself a rookie or spring chicken.
Why don't you spend more time on the forum chattin' it up with the fellas and ladies before starting some S.H.I.T!!! Welcome aboard, but DAMN take some time to get to know a few folks before popping off like that.....

Exactally!!
Not a smart idea being new to the forum spitting $hit at guys here with more experience than you dude..thats not a very good idea.:no
Keep up wasnt being dick on his bike trying to pop a wheelie in a residental street and almost looped it,he was on an open road enjoying the day with some buddies. He wasnt to know about the crest in the road...well Im sure he does now.
"THINK McFLY..THINK!!" before you post stuff like that again
Safe riding all,
:boom
Looneybomber 08-20-2003, 10:38 PM Wow man thats crazy!!! Ive jumped mine over a hill at 95, but wow 160 would probably make me shat my pants. I got my bike up to 185, and had a slight headshake at 171...That was kinda scary
THE MUFFIN MAN 08-21-2003, 05:10 AM some of the things you guys do on public roads are just plain silly. and believe me, i'm not flaming, but at some point, we as riders who, love this sport have got to grow up. there are more than enough tracks and track days in most areas to temper our need for speed. i myself have begun to attend and have plans to do even more next year. i'm glad you saved it but what about the unexpected? please fella's, leave a little margin for error and the unknown.

You're right Muffin Man. In fact, I'm going to another track day on Labor Day. Even though I don't make top end runs very often, when I do I should have done it on a more familiar road. And even then I should have run up the road and back to check for dangers before making a run like that. Although at a lower speed I don't think I would have been aware of the impact of the hills at higher speed looking back on it. However, now that it has happened to me I will never make that kind of mistake again.
Looneybomber 08-21-2003, 02:36 PM I wish there were tracks near by me that would let me take my bike on.
martinc 08-21-2003, 02:42 PM When that happend, stand on the pegs while leaning forward...I know its not easy to do,much easier to say,but that is when experience comes into play......you dont really care, you are not afraid of it,you anticipate the result......
Standing on the pegs will help the bike work its way out of road imperfections and leaning forward will EVENTUALLY stop the lifting.
After that, you"ll attack that crest with anticipation.(do it again, but at 140,then raise speed as you go)
tbc3-r1 08-21-2003, 03:11 PM Thank you MartinC. Replies like that are why I come to this site.
R1transformer 08-21-2003, 03:31 PM good to know you handled that crest. Do it again with martinc advice. I actually figured out martnc techniqued at willows straight, 160 wobbles. Using your legs as suspension really helps alot. I almost pooped myself the first time and I was in leathers. EWWW
rayoracing 08-21-2003, 07:23 PM wow that sounds scary as hell!! but yet it sounds fun!! dont get me wrong here because this is my very first post here!! i just registered here today!! i want to learn as much as i can about bikes, and this here thread is pretty informative (safetywise)!! i dont know nothing about bikes, i eventually want to go to some sort of school to learn how to even get on one!!:bow to all!!
now flame on the nooB!!:finger

:hellobye Welcome to the board. Read and learn and take it one step at a time. Please don't want an R1 for your first bike mate.
rayoracing 08-21-2003, 08:16 PM yes ive heard that over and over!! sorry if i hijack the thread here but i have lots to learn!! what bike DO you recomend for beginners?? i heard the honda cbr or the ninja 500, or should i try for something smaller?? i have NO riding experience whatsoever!! all i know about sport bikes is what ive seen on TV and what ive heard on the net!! and believe me ive seen/heard more tragic stories than good ones!! and im still interested!! the search feature is gonna be my best friend for awhile!!:rock
Yeah, you got it. Search for first bike etc and you will find all the answers you need. Sports bikes are not the best choice for 2 reasons. You will bang it up while learning and they are just so damn fast and take a bit of experience to handle without hurting yourself.
uk_scar 08-21-2003, 08:48 PM glad you ok man for real
but the Holy Bananas!!!!!!!!!! bit is well ghey.:no :no :no :no
2MileHighR1 08-22-2003, 12:14 PM When you guys make a top speed run I suggest you drive the road first and look for pot holes, gravel, roadkill, wet spots, cops hidden in bushes,etc.,etc.,etc., and when all looks good, drive back to where you started and go for it, realizing of course, that it's never really safe.
He said - 'Standing on the pegs will help the bike work its way out of road imperfections and leaning forward will EVENTUALLY stop the lifting.' I would think that the wind blast at 160mph would blow you off of the bike if you should stand up on the pegs. But then I have never tried it so maybe not.
Rayoracer. please take a msf new rider class before you buy a bike. Check the web site for a class in your are. http://www.msf-usa.org/ Taking this class can make the difference between having a good motorcycling experience and having a bad experience and leaving the sport. In the new rider class everything is provided for you, helmet, and motorcycle. Yes that is correct small 125 and 250cc machines are provided. This will let someone who thinks that they want a motorcycle find out before buying one and then maybe deciding that they do not really want to do this. As far as which bike to get as a first bike. I recommend finding something older and less expensive. You will have some tipovers and it will really hurt your feelings if you do that on a new bike. So look for a older ex500 ninja, or a suzuki gs500, maybe a Honda nighthawk 700 or 750. Look to spend about $2k or so. Ride it for a year and then move up. These bikes are still plenty of fun but less expensive to buy and insure. I do not recommend a inline four 600cc anything. All of those bikes put 100hp to the ground and will hit 160mph. Riding a motorcycle well is a steep learning curve. Really we should never stop learning, I haven't and I have been riding for 34 years. Be sure to set aside some money for protective gear. A full coverage helmet, gloves, boots, jacket. I have seen a guy take a spill in a t-shirt and expose the bone in his arm. We are not supposed to see our bones! :no Just my opinion, as always YMMV.
rayoracing 08-22-2003, 06:48 PM standing on yer pegs doing 160mph and flying off sounds logical to me too!! but like you all know i dont know shiet about riding!!:)
BTW budo thnx for the link!! that is greatly appreciated!! oh and its rayoracing!!:yesnod
keep-up 08-23-2003, 09:09 PM I wanna add one more point to Budo's point above. For those who have never riden a street bike but have been around folks talking about 600 cc, 750 cc, 1000 cc, 1300 cc they don't have an appreciation for the power these engines put out. Suffice it to say that the power is downright scary if you don't know how to manage it even you have a set of steel testicles. Take a look at that video of that newby who gets on a bike and goes 20 ft down the street and smacks right into a tree.
My point is this: if you've never riden a motorcycle before and you go to a MSF training course you will discover that even the "little" 125 cc bikes have a TON of power!!! Therefore RESPECT IT!!!
racergirl 08-25-2003, 09:01 AM Wow! Happy you were able to pull it out! :)
viper6277 08-25-2003, 09:17 AM That's nuts dude.... it's a good thing your still around...
About the track day.....me a few friends signed up for Reduc's Pocono East track day....(Satudray and Sunday ) september 27th ...
I can't wait it would be my frist time at the track with a bike.,.,I've been there before just to watch and stuff....but I'm all geared up to go.

gringo in dr 11-02-2003, 02:59 PM Being a lurker on this board for a couple of weeks, I have to throw my two cents in.
First let me start by saying, I'm sure most of you have more experience than me.
I started on a ratty looking fzr 400. After 7 or 8 months I went to the other extreme, BMW R1200C. After another 8 months or so, I bought an FZ1.
Currently I'm bikeless and looking at buying a 2001 R1.
I love to crack the throttle open as much as the next guy, but going 165 mph indicated (150+- mph) on public roads is never safe. Save it for the track.
Let the flames begin.
:D

I don't believe he means to standing up like as to stretch your legs... Re-apply the weight of your ass gingerly from the seat and apply your lower body weight onto the pegs and keep an aggresive riding position leaning forward on the tank. Trust your pegs.
my two cents

as a new rider i can't stress how important it is to take an msf class. i know this isn't an option for most. meaning, if you already have a bike before you take the class it's going to be hard not to get on the road. it's tempting. i would ride around on my roommate's before i knew too much about the class but it was to learn how to stop and go, shifting from 1st to second, learning the controls. i am so glad i took the class before i got 'on' the road. i was doing about 50 in a 45 going down a hill the other week and started braking with the front and rear brake. well, back brake locked up and i started to slide. may not freak some of you experienced guys but it scared the shit out of me. all that ran through my head was my msf instructor saying, 'if your brakes lock in the front, release pressure and reapply. your rear brakes lock up, keep pressure applied til you stop.' i would have been intersection fodder if i did not know how to come to a f'up stop correctly. i keep my msf certificate where i can see it everyday before i get on my bike.
The Woodman 11-03-2003, 01:16 PM I don't know whats up with you guys. HELLO!!! its an R1 we are talking about. wheelies at 160+ (expected or not) are what you paid for when you bought the damn bike. Oh and before I forget, high insurance payments are also part of the R1 package.
I am adding a URL for all you kids to look at. Because I am thinking that you guys need to draw up a will or sell your bike and buy a scooter
