mercurial 05-07-2002, 04:51 PM hey, just wanted to know a bit more about standups...
how do you get over the fear when your butt is sticking out in the air and the bike starts accelerating like mad?
furthermore, after you push down on the front shocks and grab a fistful of throttle, do you pull up on the handlebars? how do you hang on to the bike without it taking off from underneath you, and not whiteknuckle the handlebars?
THE MUFFIN MAN 05-07-2002, 07:59 PM i'm with you man. i want like hell to learn stand-ups but every time i stand up it just doesn't seem right. when i watch my buds do it it looks so easy and smooth. i'm still doin'em sitting down but i HAVE to learn stand-ups. you get so much more poontang when you stand up next to a cutie on the freeway and then let her catch up after you put it down. she'll almost throw her panties at you!!!:makeout
Maxxym 05-08-2002, 12:15 AM lol!!!!!!!
how do you do sit downs?? LOL
just kidding... I know how, I just don't have enought balls to do one for more than one seciond hehehe
SPANKY-R1 05-08-2002, 12:22 PM I WAS WONDERING IF YOU STAND-UP FIRST OR STAND-UP WHILE TRYING TO DO THE WHEELIE? I'M 6'3" AND I FEEL LIKE I'M TOO TALL!
Swedie 05-08-2002, 12:51 PM you can start out standing or sitting.
going from sitting to standing is not easy cuz you can easily loose your sense of balance.
Shift to 2nd gear.. standup.. accelerate and pretty hard and bounce the bike and will come up. just continue giving throttle.
Balancing a standup wheelie is harder than doing sitting wheelies. But once you get the hang of it there won't be a problem.
mercurial, that the bike would continue forward and You NOT.. is false. Only if you jump off the bike that will happen.
Just hold the handlebars and stand.. you'll do just find.
not sure what else to say really.
rescueswimmer 05-08-2002, 07:23 PM just like swede says. 2nd gear about 50 mph bounce, litterally bounce and give throttle. it feels weird, but once it is up there, it actually feels natural. now off you go
Falcon1 05-08-2002, 07:59 PM Yes off you go...... and make sure you post the video of the crash. Seriously wheelies look like fun but the thought of wrecking a beautiful new bike isn't worth it.
Maybe if you bought an old bike to practice on. That I would do.
EarlThePearl 05-09-2002, 08:08 AM You can check out my video:

I'm not very good at it yet, but there one good close up of me starting a stand-up that might give you an idea what it takes. Takes more practice than anything. Start with little ones then start pushing the balance point a little higher as you feel comfortable. I still speed up a lot doing stand-ups. Even though I feel like I'm way up there, the video shows otherwise. I still have a ways to go to find that true balance point while standing up.
SPANKY-R1 05-09-2002, 08:50 AM WHAT IS THE EASIEST TO DO A STAND UP OR SIT DOWN. I HEARD YOU CAN JUDGE YOUR BALANCE POINT BETTER BY STANDING UP. IS THIS TRUE?
SPANKY-R1
:D
ADD WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU USE TO GET YOUR VIDEOS FROM THE CAMERA TO THE COMPUTER.
I HAVE A SONY TRV-330 DIGITAL/CAMCORDER:rock
EarlThePearl 05-09-2002, 09:42 AM Hey Spanky,
I think it's a matter of opinion whether stand-ups or sit-downs are easier. I find sit-downs easier to get up and shift, but stand-ups are more fun to do when you get the hang of it.
That cam corder you have, is it a Mini-Dv? Does it have a USB or firewire connection?
I use a program called MGI Video Wave right now. you can use anything that's made to do it (Adobe Premier, Ulead Video Studio ect.)
SPANKY-R1 05-09-2002, 10:05 AM Thats what I figured that it was matter of opinion! I think it was the 2nd sit down wheelie, were you in 1st or 2nd? It just seemed so smooth. When I'm in 2nd I usally have to throttle on/off then back on @ about 65mph 7500 rpm's. Where are you at?
Nice video:rock.........are you on the blue r1?
My video is a 8mm camcorder that also takes digital pictures! It did come with a usb cable and some software 'videosuite se' witch I think the 'se' is just a demo. I can make audio files but no video's!
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) :thumbup
Spanky-R1
EarlThePearl 05-09-2002, 10:34 AM Everything on that video started in 2nd gear. I clutch up my sit-downs in 2nd, that's why I think they are easier to get up. Around 7000 RPM sounds about right for any kind of throttle wheelie in 2nd. The blue guy is me all day. The guy on the F4 is my buddy Scott. He does some pretty good sit-downs, but got left out of this video for now.
I don't know much about 8mm and how that works. If it has a USB connection, then I would have to assume the video can be captured. The 'se' could stand for second edition. You know what I always say, "RTFM."
SPANKY-R1 05-09-2002, 11:37 AM So how do you clutch it in second?
How fast are you going and what rpm's do you bring it up to when your clutching?
Do you let the clutch out fast slow ect.............
Thanks for the help!:jump
Liter Boy 05-09-2002, 12:00 PM I could do 2nd gear stand ups on my old f4 but the R1 bars make me feel to hunched over to do stand up yets and i'm 6' 4" and feel too tall maybe I'm just a wimp:D
EarlThePearl 05-09-2002, 12:02 PM Less than 7000RPM, maybe 60MPH on the speedo, or around there. I basically flick the clutch and give it plenty of throttle. Comes up in a hurry that way. You can feather the clutch or flick it, whichever feels better. I wouldn't 'dump' the clutch though. That's a recipe for flipping.
Remember that the compression ratio on this bike is something like 12:1, which means to you and me that rolling off the throttle makes the wheel come down in a hurry. If you get in a little trouble going to high, get off that throttle quick, and you'll have plenty of room to save it.
Swedie 05-09-2002, 12:03 PM regarding clutching it up in 2nd.. it's very hard on the gearbox.
but I can clutch it up going 30mph in 2nd.. but that's so damn hard on the gearbox that I never do it (did it recently though .. on "mistake" heh).
it's all about technique.
Top Gun R1 05-09-2002, 02:54 PM Why do you use the clutch to get it up in 2nd? Why don't you just roll the throttle?

Well, it just depends what I'm doing. When doing stand-ups I don't use the clutch. But sitting down it's just easier and smoother to clutch it up.
"Clutch it up" -- let me be a little more specific. This is a very quick little 'half grab' of the clucth, merely a flick, a touch if you will. It provides a tiny little boost that helps the wheel come up effortlessly. I used to do this with my F2 all the time, and the gearbox was rock solid when I sold it (with over 40,000 miles on it, 35,000 of which I put on it). I don't think it's very abusive if done correctly. But it's just my opinion.
mercurial 05-09-2002, 03:33 PM I've been doin a bunch of sitdown 2nd gear clutchups, I peg the RPM at around 7K, and flick the clutch in and out real quick which giving a handful of throttle, which gets it to maybe 9K RPM. By dumping it you generally mean clutch in, open throttle correct? I don't do that, but I do give it a healthy handful.
Ive tried giving less throttle and using more technique, but the bike doesnt come up fast enough; I end up having to pin the throttle open after clutchup, and the bike redlines before I get to any appreciable height.
I don't think I'm being inordinately hard on my clutch/tranny by doing clutchups this way?
anyway, I'm looking forward to doing standups, where I just bounce and throttle on.
mercurial 05-09-2002, 03:42 PM don't you find the HP in first gear scary? I have a decent ammount of experience with first gear to second on other bikes, and do them occasionally on the R1. But just a couple days ago, I was guilty of the squidliest of all squid manevuers:
I flipped my bike in first. Guess I just got lax, and maybe I on/offed it for perfect rebound added kick, and I just rejetted my bike...
regardless on reasons, the bike kick flipped and karate chopped me in a milisecond. no chance to take off throttle, no chance to use the rear brake. Hell I didn't even land on my bike, I landed on my butt/stomach as I watched my bike fly forward in the air!!
miraculously, damage is all cosmetic.. tail, lower/mid fairing, frame sliders (I have them all on!), slightly bent exhaust. I'm staying clear of first gear wheelies for awhile.
mercurial 05-09-2002, 03:47 PM thats lower mid/right of one side only. using ebay i can get it all fixed for probably close to $400, which is pretty amazing
zazzle_swagneer 05-10-2002, 01:45 PM for wheelie in 1st...you don't have to do anything special to tease it up...no wonder it flipped!! sorry to hear that though!
....just roll on front standstill, or any speed for that matter it... comes up fast but not uncontrollably.....my bike needs more body language to get it going in second as it only skips on full accelleration when I'm sitting down...
... if I pul the bars a bit or squodge the rear shock it will come up nice and smooth...still learning
those though.... ..passengers help alot!....heh
I think alot of dudes here have jet kit, pipe, sprocket combos that really let the bike rip after 7K....
THE MUFFIN MAN 05-10-2002, 03:42 PM i don't have any trouble doing first gear sit downs. anywhere from 4-7k rpms just back off the throttle a little and right back on. she comes up quick but not too quick. i can pretty much ride first gear all the way out of the powerband and it comes down. now second is a different story. i flipped my 01 (CHROMED, PIPED, AND RIDICULOUSLY CUSTOMIZED) last year in second gear. i really can't say what happened. i had been doing second gear clutch-ups for a while and had gotten pretty comfortable with it. this day however, i did something wrong and in a millisecond i was flipping down the highway as my bike cartwheeled in front of me. when we both stopped, i was dazed and my 01 was totalled!! since then i have been a little hesitant to second gear my 02 although i have been practicing each day i ride. i just don't keep it up very long. the R1 seems to have a very high balance point and it feels like you are going to flip as you try and find it.
Maxxym 05-10-2002, 07:32 PM Well.. I want to learn wheelies.. I guess I need some more confidance. I can do one on 1st for about 1 second or so lol...did it a whopping two times :p
I been told here to get used to stand on pegs first. I did that. I am trying to get used to the standing feeling. I just go on 3rd gear, stand up and basically practice standing up and bouncing the bike and giving it a little throttle, just so I know how it will react. I dont' pop a wheel up yet. Just want to get used to it.
But the more I think or it the more I think that I just enjoy doing nice turns. I don't know... there is just something that scares me about doing those whellies. I can get the front up on 1st but I am scared to keep it up in fear of flipping.
THE MUFFIN MAN 05-10-2002, 09:10 PM it's just like anything else, practice makes perfect. just remember to only do what YOU are comfortable doing. don't let your buds pressure you into doing more than you're ready for. believe me they will try. as i siad i'm just beginning to try second again after flipping my 01 and its a little scary, but i keep practicing and slowly i feel it coming back. i've had my 02 now since february and i know i can do it but it mostly a mental thing now. in the back of my mind i remeber the fall. so until i get past this mental block i'll just keep inching along.:jump
EarlThePearl 05-12-2002, 01:47 AM Well here goes another mis-guided comment, since I'm sitting here 2 in the morning 3 sheets to the wind. I just got my new computer desk put together (3 hours ago) and I'm taking it for a test drive. No left over parts, which is a good sign.
glug...glug...glug
The reason I do wheelies is because it's something I've been doing since I was a kid on bicycles, three-wheelers and dirtbikes. They are a lot of fun, but I understand there is an inherent risk I'm taking. Not to mention the danger to myself, wheelies are illegal, just like speeding, and if I'm caught I'll pay the price. I'm willing to take these risks with all that in mind.
gulp...gulp...gulp
I tend to give advice on wheelies, inept as it may be, unconditionally. I tend not to judge nor predict your level of ability.
drink...drink...drink
Was I going somewhere with this? Oh yeah, I was trying to make a point I think. Before you go out and start trying wheelies, ask yourself this question and try to be honest with yourself. Am I doing this because it's cool, or it's the thing to do, or peer pressure? What's the true reason I want to know how to do this thing?
glub...glub...glub
I think for me its stems from a childhood thing. It's a skill I acquired at an early age that I'm transcending into my adult life. Sure it looks cool to your buds and all, but it really comes from my desire to master a skill.
Burrrrrrrrrrrrrp
Ok ok, enough of the futile attempt to be insightful. But just try to be aware of the reason you do things. I know this sounds like your mom and shit, but don't go out and do things on your scooter just because they are cool or you’re trying to be down with the 'in' crowd. Do it for yourself, truely.
sip...sip...sip
Or just ignore everything I just said, since I'm well past a 12 pack of Bud Light and have no idea what the **** I'm talking about, or for the fact that it took me 45 min. to compose this bullshit. How 'bout a chic pic to top it off then:
mercurial 05-12-2002, 01:26 PM you did sound pretty drunk haha
anyway, I never had any problem in first gear either, riding them to redline. But just like BadazzR1, somehow I hit it perfectly and the thing flipped instantly. oh well, I'm finding really reasonable deals on plastic for the 01, this whole thing is gonna cost less than $400.
mercurial 05-13-2002, 11:57 AM yep, did my first little standup on sunday, bout maybe a foot off the ground... and then I banged my balls on the tank coming down. ouch.
rods1 05-13-2002, 12:49 PM What is the difference in flicking feathering and dumping the clutch.
69'er 05-14-2002, 09:40 AM you get so much more poontang when you stand up next to a cutie on the freeway and then let her catch up after you put it down. she'll almost throw her panties at you!!!
Baddazzr1. I havent had any panties come flying by me, from some chick throwing out the window. Have got a lot of strange looks when they pull up beside you again though.
mercurial 05-14-2002, 04:31 PM strange looks??! that should come from old people, not chicks, they love it!!! :boobies
maybe you are doing something to make them think you are strange:bash :crash :D
THE MUFFIN MAN 05-14-2002, 07:54 PM i heard the women in dallas don't wear panties so maybe that's why!!!
69'er 05-14-2002, 08:24 PM most of the ones I know do wear them, they might all be thongs, but they count. I had one a red light the other day telling me I was driving to fast. I was like what do you mean I'm in town and I only broke 120 mph. what was her prob. ?
To the clutching the R1, I did it once, once in second. I puckered my cheeks I almost looped. Thank god for the rear break. havent done it since. dont need to she comes up just fine with out it.
69'er 05-14-2002, 08:43 PM this is to Mercurial: for the "maybe you are doing something to make them think you are strange"
only have one thing to say, Whatever "first gear"
And I can sat that! lol:rock
mercurial 05-15-2002, 11:11 AM hey 69'er, it was just a playful suggestion, but you decided to take it personal. So now I'm going to dump a boatload of shit on you:
yea I might've flipped it in first, but if I was actually embarrassed by that, I wouldn't have posted it to this forum. I ****ed up, we all do occasionally, but at least I have the balls to get out there. that being said:
I guarantee I'll smoke your ass any day of the week, you probably have pussy stripes across the whole tire unless you wore them off doing circles in a parking lot, dallas-boy. You self admittedly can't even figure out how to clutch wheelies, which means by very definition you are poser that needs a literbike to do any stunting.
oh and by the way, your stupid name says it all. Why don't you go watch Bill and Ted's excellent adventure one more time, sport?
69'er 05-15-2002, 11:46 AM ok i was joaking, thats the whole lol on the end. but if you want to take it personal thats ok. The reason i said i can say that is because i have dont the first gear loop myself. no fun. I was just joaking. Now if you want to come play come on. no stripes here. well see who dust who!
cant we all just love each other:makeout
mercurial 05-15-2002, 12:11 PM didn't sound like a joke, but then again no one ever said the internet was good at conveying subtle tones.
anyway, most chicks here seem to like it. Old mom women don't, but my friend has an interesting comeback, while they are shouting obscenities at stoplights be pretends like they want to hookup with them. starts throwin pickup lines at them, and sometimes humps his bike. hes a real jackass lol
69'er 05-15-2002, 03:44 PM let me rephrase a bit. The young girls like it. (the one too young for me) The ones my age think im crazy. I'm not in my 20's anymore.:(
but I'm not old either, just getting there....
mercurial 05-15-2002, 06:11 PM well theres your answer. Obviously the younger ones are more easily impressed by such antics...
HOWEVER, I see older chicks jockin' at times also, I think it reminds them of the excitement that once was or could have been in their life some years ago.
