I have an '03 R1 and currently in the market for a steering damper. However, I'm tossed up about which damper would be the ideal for my type of riding. I do a some twisty mountain riding here and there; but, mainly street and freeway riding. Does anyone have some feedback between Hyperpro, Ohlins and Scotts Dampers?:dunno
justinryanr1 09-08-2003, 01:10 PM I have a Scott's and love it. I like being able to adjust it while riding made it super nice to find the setting I liked which ended up being alot firmer than I thought it would be~!
craiganator 09-08-2003, 06:17 PM I just got my R1. It had a damper already installed. Not sure of brand. I took it off temporarily because its mounting brackets were in a position where the clutch lever had to be rotated up in the air where your hand had to grab the clutch at an odd angle. I just needed the clutch to be at a more natural angle instead of reaching up as if to wave hello to someone. If I adjusted the clutch lever down, when the bars were turned to the right the lever would hit the damper. I need to find one with adequate clearance. Any ideas.
chicknstripless 09-08-2003, 06:21 PM I have two r1's, on one I have a scotts damper and the other I have an ohlin w/harris mount. NOTE: everyone like something different, they are all great quality, and very expensive. The ohlin works better but the scotts is easier to remove for tech work!
i have a 01 R1 w/ a scotts dampner. i like it cuz you can transfer to other bikes by just buying a different mount. if you crash, the pin where it mounts to the frame is designed to brake off so you won't damage the dampner. plus there's endless amount of adjusments: the primary knob, a secondary knob to even tighten up the primary knob and the independent sweep angles for each side (lft/right). once set to your liking, you never need to touch it again. cuz it reacts to high frequency hits. and you can fine tune that too. had mine for 2 years w/o any problems. other alternative is ohlins since that's all they do is dampening equipments.
bigkvn1 09-12-2003, 08:50 PM Havent tried the scotts but love my ohlins w/ graves mount:rock
Both seem to be top o da line:D
keep-up 09-12-2003, 08:59 PM I have the Scott's and I'm VERY satisfied but in hindsight I might have elected to get something a little cheaper since so far I haven't needed to make any adjustments (still at recommended initial middle-of-the-road setting). Not worth the money if you don't need to make the on the fly adjustments like the weekend warrior I'm becoming.

I second that!:hellobye
In2Deep 09-17-2003, 01:33 AM A local racer (#1 plate champion actually) recommended the GPR stabilizer http://www.gpr-products.com/bike_kits.htm does anyone have any input on it, and how it would compare to the Ohlins or Scotts?
Mario
Limited R1 09-17-2003, 01:37 AM I have an Ohlins and it's great but Scotts is just as good, kinda down to looks and the Scotts is easier to remove.
brooke 09-22-2003, 02:39 PM I bought a GPR Dampener at the AMA's this past weekend but have yet to install it. I'll be sure to do a full write-up on it very soon!!!

brooke 09-23-2003, 09:52 PM After installing the GPR Dampner I feel the mounts are alot better than the Scotts and Ohlins for starters. Even thouh the GPR doesn't have a Low Speed and High Speed Setting I was not bothered. Who needs a Low Speed Damper anyway? DUH!! For $300 I feel this product is a well put together piece of work plus it has a Life-time Warranty and has less Internal Parts than the others... As far as the looks go I think it looks fine. Granted the Scotts and Ohlins is more Eye-Candy but so far it seems to do a Great job.. So far I have set mine on Setting 3 for my riding style... Also keep in mind GPR only makes Dampers...:0

In2Deep 09-24-2003, 06:58 AM Thanks brooke, I might have to give it a try :)

MegatronR1 09-24-2003, 09:33 AM I like my Scotts damper.. adjustable on the fly (I know that's been said already).. and it works awesome! Plus another side benefit is that it isn't as crash-susceptible as some of the others because of its smaller size and shape that keeps it out of harms way.. :rock
Lawnboy 09-24-2003, 09:50 AM Ohlins Baby!!
Motul 09-24-2003, 10:41 AM I have the TOBY top mount.
It works very well, and I paid
a fraction of what you guys did.
cockney 09-24-2003, 11:02 AM they easy to fit?
In2Deep 09-24-2003, 07:13 PM The GPR looks like it came with the bike. Very clean. Either way I guess there is absolutely no doubt that I will need one on the 04 :yesnod
T-Pole 09-24-2003, 07:30 PM Dude, I thought that the Scotts is kinda a pain in the ass, with those 8 tinny Allens that are a pain to loosen. What makes the Ohlins harder to remove?
brooke 09-24-2003, 07:35 PM Removing the GPR is just 2 Allen Screws on top. What a deal for $300 and a Lifetime Warranty!!!!!!!!!

fastone21 10-15-2003, 01:52 PM I have the gpr stabilizer and bought mines at the AMA races for 300 installed and love it. at 170 mph it was like I was doing 90. Slow speed isn't bad either. You can change settings on the fly also with one hand. I usually use setting 2.5 around town and 3.5 on the interstate.
r1flyer 10-21-2003, 12:57 PM I have an 03 R1 and bought an Ohlins. I was simple to install and works great. I haven't used anything other than Ohlins so I can't comment on the others but I'm sure they work very well also. You probably won't be disappointed with whatever you buy. Just get whichever one you think looks the best and how much you want to spend. Don't worry what anyone else says. Remember, most people think they know more than they do so be cautious who you take advise from!
bikenut 10-21-2003, 01:37 PM Well I'll say from experience that Anything is better than nothing so get what you like, but get something!
I got the scotts used and its fantastic! I to, have just set it at the factory settings and it seems just right :)
RUFFSTUFF 10-21-2003, 02:12 PM I like my Matris Pro M-3. It's sweet!

spudtheslug 10-23-2003, 03:06 PM I bought an ohlins damper with a harris fitting kit for my 2000r1 today .Can anyone help with the fitting instructions? :thumbup
runningman 10-23-2003, 05:32 PM scotts all the way
'O2R1Pilot 10-26-2003, 06:04 PM Keep-up:
I'm running my Scotts 14 clicks out. Stock setting is 7-8 clicks out and after running 400 miles on the stock setting, and then the next day doing the same route back home it makes a very big difference at high speeds over less than perfect road surfaces.
BTW, Brooke, "low speed" is referring to frequency/movement due to hits, not mph.
I have both Ohlins and Scotts and love both...
Chavagnatze 10-26-2003, 06:18 PM Scotts on my bikes ^_^
silver03R-1 10-26-2003, 06:20 PM ohlins/harris:rock
shady 10-26-2003, 06:24 PM hyperpro and it works and look just fine
tidbit 10-26-2003, 06:28 PM scotts.. simply.. because i'll never have to buy another damper again for my bikes.. why? cause each bike i buy.. i pay 100 bucks for a mount.. and 2 allen bolts and the scotts mounts up :yesnod
ohlins is also an awsome damper hands down
Charger67 11-01-2003, 07:49 PM Go for a matris damper, it will only takes you half a hour
to mount it, they are not expensive, and they works fine.
The lookes are good too.
