You have better control of the bike by keeping the other two fingers on the handle. It's also faster to shift. Sometime a quick tap will do as well, when you really wanna go fast.. I agree...mostly you've got to learn to feel for the friction zone on your own bike. It may be a little different for each bike.:fact
