I have even tried leaning to the left to counter balance it.....didnt work. Wind direction doesnt seem to matter either?....YOu guys have this problem with your 02? any help would be great!! i have the same problem. it is really bad on the stand ups. i have been working on the problem for a while now. and i have found two things wrong with mine.
1st- the motor mount bolts and the swing arm have a threaded adjusting sleve that is ment to take up the space between the motor and the frame. they are located on the right side rear of the motor just over and under the clutch cover and the swind sleve is under the swing arm pivot bolt nut. if these are over tightened this will spread the frame apart to much and effect the handling. it takes a speical tool to lossen the adjusting sleeve, but your dealer should have one.
2nd- my swing arm was 0.60 off. i am not sure of which way. i was not there when the yamaha tech was taking all the measurments. but they are sending me a new swing arm, coverd under warrenty.
but after i readjusted the motor in the frame it seemed to help with the wheelies.just lossen the swing arm and the motor then, just follow the motor install dir. in the service manal. and retighten the swing arm last. it is pretty easy. one question for you. the yamaha tech asked me to get the last for of anybody elses 02 r1 that has the same problem. he said my be there is a quality control issue here and would like to try and catch it.

oh yea and one more thing. make sure you put the same amount of your body weight on each of the pegs. the r1 is really sensetive to the riders weight changes. changing my weight from peg to peg how i take corners on my 02 r1

Thanks for the info Smoke!! Ill try to take her in and explain what u said to my azzface service department guys! I had a popping in my forks that i took in and they said it was my suspension breaking in! I explained to them that i wasnt a 16 year old kid and knew what a suspension felt like and that wasnt it! I even went as far to ask them to look at the head bearing possibly coming loose, They said aawwwww no that cant be it....ride it see if it gets better! So i said sure, as long as u guys cover what screws up because u wont check it out further. So i went to an awesome shop down the street they said HEAD BEARING! I went home tightend her up ,,,,problem fixed!!!!!! So you know who i called back to tell them my FIX.......lol ANYWAY.............what im tring to say is.........MY Yammy dealer are azzez and ill see what they can/will do....Thanks a ton for the info !!!!!1 I love this bike but i NEED to wheelie farther HAHHAHHAHAHAHAHA......thanks brotha ill let u know!!:boobies :boobies

my 02 pulls to the right during any kind of wheelie..longest i can go is second gear or i'll run off the road..tried evry body position possible...

have 300 miles on it, and have tightene dthe chain a few times, changed the sprocket....and have switched tire brands...

soo that rules out tire alignment and brand.....

Mine does it too... I have to hang way off the left of the bike to get it to wheelie straight. send that yamaha rep over my way!

you're not starting out the wheelie correctly.
or you're not at the balance point..
when you're the balance point you can begin counter-steering the bike.

I find sometimes when im pulling up wheelies my bike seems to lean to the right, but i found this was my technique or the road camber rather than a problem with my 99 bike.

all you guys that have the wheelies on an '02 that are pulling to the right. my yamaha tech asked me to get the last 4 numbers of the vin. he thinks there might have been a production problem and wants to see if it is a certain batch of bikes or the problem has been a hit and miss. he really needs this info. it will help all of us out. the tech guy that i have been dealling with is a good guy and will make things right. you can either email me directly or just post them here. all i need is the last 4 numbers of the vin. this number is what number your bike was off the assem. line.

My first '02: # 0363 (OK) (of course the perfect one got stolen)
My current '02: # 1039 (leans HARD right)

Guys, I assure you it is not my technique. My first '02 was straight as an arrow. I could take my hand off the bars and lay down and go to sleep and it would continue in a perfectly straight line forever (wel, until i hit something). But my current '02 I take my hands off the bars and I'm suddenly making a sharp right turn.

SMOKE1: *Please* keep in touch with me about this and maybe give me the Yami reps contact info. This is my biggest complaint about this bike! (my ONLY other complaint is the 4-5k rpm vibration)

I always thought it was the roads. On most roads here the right lane is slanted to the right to help water runoff, and my bike always pulls to the right on those roads. But on some parts of the freeway, the road is perfectly level and my bike runs straight during wheelies...

i have been talking with my yamaha rep. and he says that everybody that has a problem with the bikes pulling to the right should talk to there dealers and get a yamaha rep to come to the dealer and look at the bike. the yamaha reps. work in regions. and i am asking him to check with all other reps to check their dealers to see if anyone has reported this problem. i just got a job at my dealer that i deal with so i might be able to help a little more with this problem. i will do what i can. just keep bitching at the dealers about you bike pulling to the right and the message will get thru. everybody that has this problem needs to make sure they bitch about it or nothing will be done.
