Yamaha teams make early progress in Sepang tests

Sepang, Malaysia
24/1/2004

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi (Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team)
today completed 58 laps of the 5.548km Sepang circuit in Malaysia acclimatising
himself to an unfamiliar machine. The Italian superstar will challenge for a
fourth premier class title on the Yamaha M1 for the first time this season.

In conditions remarkably similar to those at the Grand Prix held here in
mid-October last year the 24-year-old put in a best lap time of 2m 03.80
seconds. The Italian Yamaha recruit was happy with his day's work, after
spending more than two months without riding a potent MotoGP machine.

"That was quite good," he said. "We have a lot of work to do, but the bike is
not bad at this early stage and after so much time off I need to get more
distance covered to improve things. But for a first day on a new bike things
were okay. We'll work our way through gradual changes to the chassis and engine
tomorrow."

Rossi's Crew Chief Jerry Burgess said, "We didn't really do much more than get
him familiar with the bike. It takes a while to get eye co-ordination back
after a long lay-off and we just made minor refinements to deliver what
Valentino wants from the bike. What we're looking for is information to work
out the direction we need to go in - and we're all working together in that."

Carlos Checa, Rossi's team-mate in the new Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team, put
in 53 laps and the Spanish charger requested an extra half-hour's track time at
the end of the day to get his 220bhp M1 machine further dialled-in to the
sinuous Sepang track.

"I felt more comfortable as the day went on," said Checa. "We had some
vibration at the front end in the final session though, but before that I was
quite consistent with my times." His best lap of the day was a 2m 04.10 second
lap. "We can't really expect too much on day one, but there will be more to
come tomorrow."

Checa's Crew Chief Antonio Jimenez was content with the first day's work. "That
was a normal first day," he said. "But we spent a bit of time trying to sort
out the vibration at the front end. It's not a big problem but Carlos was
consistent and we will improve tomorrow."

"Today was special for us," said Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team Director Davide
Brivio. "It was very emotional seeing the number 46 on our Yamaha and we just
tried to adjust the bike to his needs. Carlos continued his job and overall we
had a positive day. But this is just the first day."

Marco Melandri (Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team) couldn't tuck himself in
properly behind his M1's fairing on the two Sepang straights owing to stiffness
in his right shoulder after off-season surgery. The Italian rode 48 laps and
had to be content with a best first day's time of 2m 05.40 seconds. "I've spent
almost 100 days without riding," said the Italian. "But my shoulder should
loosen up tomorrow and I will improve. Even so I was a tenth of a second faster
than my best race lap here last year."

His team-mate Norick Abe (Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team) was happy enough with
a 2m 05.84s lap after completing 50 laps on his number one machine. "That's
okay for the time being," said the Japanese. "We used last year's settings on a
new chassis so it needed work to refine."

Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team Director Herve Poncharal is heading up a new team
with two new riders and he looked at day one of this three-day test session as
time well spent. "We did exactly what we thought we'd do, " he said. "We
improved the lap times each time out and we didn't want to push Marco too hard
too early. It's early days, but Yamaha is going in the right direction."

Thx for the video!

:beer

I think Rossi will do fine for 2004 just like Burgess predicted. He was able to do 2¡¦03.80 on the first day with a bike that he first time rode, plus he hasn't ride for more than two months. Biaggi, who was the quickest for the past few days, he was doing 2¡¦03.47 on the first day with a bike that he used to. Just give Rossi couple of days... :thumbup

Really? They are getting a new bike? I thought that one was the new one, cause the body work is a bit different, especially the tail. Plus this one is back to the single rear shock, last year they were using some dual rear shocks type suspension...

Rossi definitely QUICK for a first timer bike, his time was almost as quick as Biaggi's first day time... :yesnod

Now all those critics saying that this season for Rossi was going to go down the drain, and that he wouldnt be competitive on the new M1 etc etc..the time sheets prove it:fact

First day of testing on a new bike and he's right up there with the fastest lap times....:yesnod Looks like the other riders in the paddock will have more of a challenge with Rossi this year than they initally thought:D

Although I personally dont think he'll be able to win the c'ship in his first year*but then again, this is the Doc we're talking about..so you never know:p*,he may be able to do what he's done in every other level when stepping up(Championship every second year on new bike..125,250,500 etc)

Congrats to Rossi for such an awesome first day testing, and hats off to Yammy for putting such a great package together first time out. Burgess even said that they hadnt done much work to the bike, and that it was only a brief set up to get Rossi on the bike and around the track...its going to be VEERRYY intresting once they get the M1 all dialed in and tuned to how Rossi wants it:fact.

Cheers.

They do seem to need to work on the bike more...get it to not want to wheelie quite as much...I am sure he will do great on it....I just think Hayden is due. Wow! Love that multi-upshift wheelie down the straight. I have to wonder though how he doesn't get headaches with a helmet so tight. Did you see how hard he had to push that thing on? And how he had to readjust his ears. Anyone else like their helmet that tight? I wonder if it reduces vibration (and hence blurred vision) at high speed?

At the track, I learned that the pros wear their lids VERY tightly. In the past, I've ordered XL's, then Large...I'm going to try an Arai Medium...painful at first I'm sure, but it's rewarding (after break in) at 120 and your lid doesn't move at all.

 Looks good, but not as good as the Gp ones.

In regards to the helmet's being sooo tight, since doing trackdays(and going 280kmh+),Ive noticed that my lid comes quite roomy after about 200kmh:no By the time Im hitting 280,the lower part of my helmet(where say your nose is)is literally pressed againt the helmet.

Do you guys have a regular helmet(firm fitting)which you wear for recreational/everyday use..and then a tiiight helmet(extra tight)for trackdays/races etc etc??? Just curious,as I feel I should have another helmet thats alot tighter when doing trackdays.

Any feedback would be great.

When I bought my Arai, I thought it was too tight, but I kept it and found it was too loose. At the track, top speed, the helmet was digging into my upper lip and smashed my nose.

If you can squeeze it on your head, it's not too tight.:fact

I can't wait to see the look on Biaggi's face when Rossi beats him again this season. He cried when he was on the M1 saying it wasn't competitive or fast enough. Also saying that if he had the RC211V things would be different. Then he still got beat by Rossi and even Gibernau, with Capirossi and the rookie, Hayden not far behind. Now if he gets beat with the same bike that he abandoned so quickly, he will surely SH*T BRIXXX!!!!

Take your beating like a man and quit crying, Beeyatch...i mean Biaggi.
