: Clutching up the R1 in 2nd?
SPANKY-R1 06-13-2002, 03:43 AM I can bounce the R1 in 2nd gear and do small stand-up wheelie's, but I was wondering how to clutch it up?
Every time I try to clutch it up the bike just grips and shoots forward.
Thanks for the input!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rock

REV1....
Any examples of speeds and rpm's while trying to clutch it?:iamwithst
szokr1 06-13-2002, 03:46 AM your dumping the clutch, try letting it out a little slower and smoother, you will feel it start to grab and lift at the same time.

Maxxym 06-13-2002, 04:08 AM yes I got a same problem...
I tried to mess with it a little the other day and what I do is give it a little tiny bit of gas and then just get on the cluth. Kind of flick it but all she does is shots forward...
Is it possible to flip R1 doing 2nd gear clutch????
How do you do it without having her bet up all violent like on 1st gear??
squidhater 06-13-2002, 04:35 AM "Is it possible to flip R1 doing 2nd gear clutch ????"
Absolutely not !:bash Everyone knows the R1 doesn't have enough power to flip over ! :iamwithst In fact, my R1 is so slow that I'm thinking about trading it in on an 84 Interceptor. Get real !!

What the hell man he is just asking a question. I hope your joking around.
szokr1 06-13-2002, 05:54 AM Like I said, don't dump the clutch, take it up to about 5 or 6000 rpm pull in the clutch, give it some more gas, and slowly let out the clutch. Just let it out slowly and you will start to feel the front come up. Once you have done it once, you will understand. Don't be afraid of your bike, if you are, don't try wheelies. It will eventually come natural.

Get_Dude 06-13-2002, 06:11 AM The way I learned 2nd gear clutchers is to take the 1 up to 65-70mph then I pull the clutch in all the way while twisting the throttle all the way then smoothly let the clutch out a little faster than pulling off in first gear but not dumping the clutch... It will come up so prepare to let the throttle back out about half way.... It takes a little practice but it's pretty easy and safer than 1st gear wheelies and yes you can flip your Sh@t if you hold the throttle wide open... Once on the balance point apply pressure to the gear shift and blip the throttle and your rollin in third on one wheel...
jstbecauz 06-13-2002, 06:16 AM If done right, is it a bit smoother to clutch it in second rather than the on off method? Do you feel like you have more control of the bike?
Thanks
theron19d 06-13-2002, 06:45 AM It is hard to get used to but with practice you'll get it. I also felt like the bike was coming out from under me when I started clutching it hard in second. As for shifting to 3rd I don't see any reason to unless you are on the highwy. 2nd will not hit the rev limiter til about 120 mph and that is usually more than enough for one wheel.
EarlThePearl 06-13-2002, 06:48 AM I gotta say to everyone that doesn't already know that there is a little bit of controversy as to whether you should clutch your wheelies or not. Here's a couple of things to think about:
Some claim it's damn hard on the gearbox/clutch; you're gonna cause things to wear out/break sooner and it's not necessary to get the wheel up because of the abundant power of the R1 (which is true).
Some claim that clutching is the only way to go to achieve Zen like wheelies and be one the world, and that the bounce/on-off method uses up the rpm's you could have been using to balance the wheelie (which is also true).
Personally, I use the bounce method for my stand-ups, and use the clutch method for my sit-downs. Not a big fan of the on-off method, but that's just me. You really have to decide for yourself what works for you, so I'd suggest trying them all and see what you like and don't like.
Just a few thoughts I thought I'd share. You have my full permission to completely ignore me.:D
Seinfeld 06-13-2002, 07:47 AM Hey Squidhater you ****ing pansee

szokr1 06-13-2002, 07:57 AM I have to agree with silversurferR1 here, barring some of the profanities, Squid hater, the forum has made a special place for stunters, It is called the stunters section. When you come into this section you should refrain from voicing your opinions about things that are talked about here. That is why Swedie opened it, so guys like you could keep your opinions to them selves. Stunters don't bitch to you about carving turns, or your riding style, so dont bitch about thier styles.
The whole intent on this section is for stunters/squids to discuss what ever we want without the negative comments from self prclaimed pro's like yourself. So do everyone a favor and stay the hell out of this section.

squidhater 06-13-2002, 11:26 AM WOW ! I figured I'd get flamed for that one but Holy shit ! Yeah I was being a little sarcastic (or alot) Not sure if I deserved the hammering or not though. IMO if you own an R1 and you "wonder" if it will flip over backwards----------------ya shouldn't be trying wheelies  Silversurfer, go have a :beer and relax before you give yourself a stroke  Now flame away boys and girls. I wont bother you "stunters" anymore.

I'm not defending or putting down anything squidhater said, but I agree with the above quote. If you have to ask if an R1 can flip trying a wheelie, then I can't imagine that your ready to try wheelies yet. In fact, I might say your not ready for an R1 period. But I couldn't say for sure if I didn't know you.
So in direct reference to Maxxym...I'd bet you are a good rider and just are asking questions. I just think squidhater thought it was a little suspect to ask that question. Just be careful learning those wheelies my brother!
JAYSTENSEC4CYL 06-13-2002, 04:31 PM Hello my name is Jay and I'm a clutcher...
Hell ya...lol I clutch my wheelies, it works better for me. This is how I do it, others may find a different way that works for them.
I always give a tug on the bars when I pick up a wheelie, even when clutching. 2nd gear rolling at what ever speed you like when you want to wheelie you will lean forward a bit, and when you tug back and up on the bars you will at the SAME TIME roll on the gas and "FLICK" the clutch. You do not want to pull the clutch lever all the way in, nor do you need to fully disingauge the clutch. Just have a finger or two on the clutch lever and pull them rearward and up, it should pull the lever in about a 1/2 inch or so before your fingers SLIP OFF of the LEVER. Just like you were riding a dirt bike out of a turn. It takes some pratice to get the timing worked out.
The most important thing I can tell you is this, people crash when they are overloaded. They try to do too much to fast. Don't be one of them. If you really wanna learn to clutch up a wheelie, start small. Pratice getting the wheel up a foot, and when you can do it everytime like you want, go bigger. Small steps get you on top of it, big steps get you to the parts counter. Good luck Brother:thumbup

yeah schmock.. I was just asking...
Its not like I don't know that you can flip R1 easy...I guess what I was asking is HOW hord actually do you have to hit it in 2nd gear to flip the bike???Is it easy to flip it?
1st gear is too violent for me...I think I will try to learn 2nd gear cluth.
:butt
dekooy 07-02-2007, 09:47 PM ok got the balance point I think, working at it slowly, trying not to bite of to much at a time. Question... at the BP how much are you working the throttle?? I get there, hold it for a sec then it just slowly comes down. I can tell I'm there cause the bike stops accellerating. I'm guessing I just need to sack up and work at it a bit more, just curious if there are any tecniques?
yuri_1 07-02-2007, 11:51 PM  check the thread dates :dundun:
but from the other side there is never late to learn wheelies I am doing this myself. cluching second is hard for me it isn't lifting enough ?
