VPREATR 03-12-2004, 07:44 PM In preparing my 2004 R1 race bike, a few essential hardware items were needed; for those that haven’t seen the new 2004 R1 Ohlins shock or Ohlins steering damper, here you go:

A second set is soon to arrive for my street bike, in addition to one of the first orders placed for FG327 Ohlins forks for the 2004 R1 – pictures to follow in a few weeks.
Thanks!

martinc 03-12-2004, 09:10 PM Do you know if the bracket holding the preload adjuster can be retrofitted to earlier models?
martinc 03-12-2004, 09:11 PM How about those nifty gas charged superbike fork legs, they are only $9k USD... a present whopping $1300 off right now :)

martinc 03-12-2004, 09:14 PM Where they fasten the fender on those...beats me.
jqd02R1 03-12-2004, 09:18 PM Mark,
that new Ohlins shock looks very trick, Do you know why they decided to mount the preload adj to the shock reservoir?
By the way, I got the Harris tail, absolutely love it the fit is awesome. My race bike is almost entirely complete...save for the actual motor itself. Wish I could have bought the '04 to race.

VPREATR 03-13-2004, 01:07 PM jqd02R1:
Ohlins chose to mount the preload adjuster directly to the shock simply due to the limited availability of mounting locations without interfering with the exhaust. Glad to hear your pleased with the Harris tail/seat, the quality is excellent. You'll have to post a few pictures of your bike upon completion, as will I when with the 04' race bike is finished.
Thanks!
diablo 03-15-2004, 05:26 AM VPREATR,
Looks good!! Man, you got too much money. I'd like to know what those two items set you back and where you found the best deal on them. Thanks!
Daekwan 03-15-2004, 05:48 AM Maybe one day I'll be able to play with the big boyz too..

VPREATR 03-16-2004, 01:03 AM Everyone:
Thanks for the complments, the suspension hardware is top notch; the shock is presently being re-valved (and re-sprung); the steering damper installed in less than 15-minutes.
Diablo:
Thanks for the compliments, as for the issue about money, it’s not quite that simple, you see I have significant paralysis in the left lower side of body accompanied by severe pain due to a major automobile accident caused by a careless driver that left me in a wheel chair for several years (spine/pelvic injury); returning to riding and then subsequently racing last year was my Mt. Everest so to speak; I feel blessed for those that have contributed to that goal. At times I have to realize that many have assisted solely due to the fact that I’ve had to face insurmountable obstacles; however I wouldn’t wish upon anyone the road I’ve had to endure. If for the rest of my life I could live without paralysis, severe pain and muscle spasms, I would gladly trade material possessions for such as my condition is degenerative with the coming of each day.
Thanks!
I've just ordered an Ohlins steering damper for my "future" 2004 R1 which will be for track use only. They must arrive soon???
I want to get it set up for racing as quick as possible and so far hadn't decided on a rear shock or rear sets. Is the rear shock any longer than stock or do they recommend raising the rear ride height at all. The reason I ask is I have heard the '04 R1's lack ground clearance and rear sets are a must. If the rear shock is raises the rear this amy be overcome (I have a Hyperpro shock instaled in my '03 and it was 10mm longer than the stock shock, plus adjustable beyond that).
Any info on this shock vs. stock would be appreciated as well as any other info you can suggest on race set up for the new model. It's difficult when your bike hasn't arrived but I'm trying to order as much as I can of the right gear in advance.
Thanks
very nice stuff....
very nice indeeeeeeeed.
;)
Warp Racer 03-16-2004, 03:25 AM VPREATR, great piccy's and thanks for the info. When you get a chance, can you show us a picture of the rear Ohlins once it's fitted, just to get an idea of how it looks.
Thanks in advance, Warp
jqd02R1 03-16-2004, 03:49 AM Mark,
That is awe inspiring now that I know about your situation. I only knew of one other person in so cal that raced and continued to ride street bike on a modified bike with shifter on the handlebars and a rig that has moveable "training wheels" that comes down at slow speed ( less than 5 mph). He was completely paralized from the waist down.
He had a CBR 900 I believed which was rigged up and he also raced the Aprillia 250 cup for a while until he was severely injured during a race.
Gutsy....

Holy Cow Bro!
I had no idea. That must have been a tremendous struggle for you. I highly respect the fact that you were able to overcome this and continue doing what you love instead of just sulking in sorrow. I have seen people crash in front of me, behind me, into each other, but usually they WILL get back on the bike. I've also had many friends die from riding. In our group we have a pact that we made. We promised each other that if any one of us were to die from riding the rest of the group must continue riding. We still believe in this pact to this day. In the 15 years I have ridden I have lost about 10 riders to death but for each one I have lost I have taught about 10 riders how to ride and continue to bring people into the fascinating world of motorcycling. Keep on riding my Bro!! :thumbup
emausa1 04-02-2004, 10:50 AM Yes very nice stuff. the shock and damper are going on my R1 this weekend. IXIEvilR1 04-03-2004, 09:46 AM there was a guy who raced at Pocono every year... he was parilized from the waiste down... i dont remember what kind of bike he had.. but he was deffinatly a racer.. when he came in to the paddock area two guys had to grab the bike so he can hop off into the chair...
anybody who rides with major dissabilities like that get props in my book... i had a bad accident in 1997 on a cbr 600 f3, i hit a guard rail going the same direction as the road and when my right leg got caught, it yanked me off the bike and when i landed on top of the rail it was like a seraded knife and just cut right through about 4 inches above my knee.. through the skin, the muscle and the bone...
another inch and i would have lost it... it still gives me problems from time to time.. like it aches and all.. but i tell you what.. i thank god everyday i didnt have to go though the rest of my life with one leg..
Good luck with your health...
