instead of paying the $60 for a new windscreen, i decided id paint the stock one myself.
What you need:
1. Krylon fusion gloss black spray paint (Walmart $3)
2. Clear coat (havent purchased yet)
3. Rubbing alcohol
Once you have the windscreen off, take a rag and the alcohol and clean the backside of the windscreen in order to remover any oils. Next tape off the rubber grommets and anything else you dont want painted. Unless you have lots of time, dont try to tape off the rounded edge at the top of the windscreen. I tried this, but after i took off the tape which i was sure was perfectly lined up, i realized that it wasnt.
Now its time to paint. I did five coats over two days. The first coat should just look like a bunch of speckles. The second should look like a smoked screen. The third and maybe fourth should only be able to see light through when held up to a light. The fifth, it will be completely black. just take your time, and dont hold the can over one place for a long time to prevent runs.
Where I messed up:
I wasnt going to use clear coat, but when i was mounting it back on my bike, i accidently scraped it with a tool which left a small but noticable scratch. I decided id use a paint brush to touch it up. Even though it had been ~5 hours since i had painted last, i ended up smearing the paint, so ill have to take the windscreen back off tomorrow and spray it again, then clear coat it.
Got any questions? let me know.
