Maxxym 06-15-2002, 06:03 AM Dammit! I cant get them!
I am trying to learn 2nd gear clutch up wheelie but I can't do them for shit!
First gear is way to violent for me so I decided to learn wheelies in 2nd...
Now, everytime I try I pull the clutch , give some gas and let the cluth go but all it does it just jerks forward really quick!!!
How??? How the hell do you guys do those things????????????????????
Swedie 06-15-2002, 06:10 AM That's what happened to me when I occationally tried clutching the bike up in 3rd.
Could be that you've worn out your clutch ... = burnt them or something.
Do like this..
snap the clutch all the way in while you give a lot of throttle.. KEEP the throttle at full.
But beware that you could becoming vertical damn fast so prepare to let go of the gas so you dont' flip your precious machinery.
Maxxym 06-16-2002, 01:04 PM is there a way to make her come up slower?? I don't want it to be as violent as on 1st gear =(
My clutch is good. I mean I don't think anything is wrong with it... I think its just a rider error ;)
SpdDemon 06-17-2002, 05:12 AM Go about 80 km/h...then instantly close the throttle and open it . If necessary pull up the handlebars:thumbup
EarlThePearl 06-19-2002, 03:30 PM Hey Max:
The best way to learn is watch others do it, live or on video. Check out the 1st video I ever made:
http://www.r1-forum.com/videos/movie.php?vid_id=98&action=embed&comments=true
These wheelies I'm doing are pre-balance point. I have since found balance point and now moving on to keeping balance point better, possibly slowing down a wheelie much later. But since your issue is just getting the wheelies up, then I suppose the video is relevant.
It shouldn't be that hard for you, it just takes some practice. Try slowing down a little in 2nd gear, let's say around 60 indicated. The trick is finding the meat of the powerband. Since you say the bike is jerking forward, then my guess is either you're going too fast or too slow, but it's just a guess. Make a trip to Texas, meet up with Jay in OK and drag 'em down here with you. We'll all go for a ride and learn 2 mile wheelies.:thumbup
SPANKY-R1 06-20-2002, 08:42 AM Max,
Just keep trying and eventually it will come. You seen my little stand up I did on the way to the lube yesterday. I need to learn to shift to 3rd!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rock

I want to get in on this (any excuse to do some wheelies works for me!).
But in the meantime, here is one thing that might help.
Think about what you typically do when you accelerate....you lean forward. This is natural, but works directly against the wheelie. Try to force yourself to not lean forward when you blip the clutch & begin accelerating. In fact, lean back a little & see how big an impact this simple positioning can make.
BTW, that's for sit-downs only. If you are going to bounce the bike up while standing, don't use the clutch.
Maxxym 06-20-2002, 10:06 PM yeah Scott.. say it how you want it man, but that wheelie of yours looked sweettt!!!!!!1 :makeout
Man, I want to learn damn wheelies!!!!!!!!!!!! I am scared of 1st gear because it picks up so damn fast, so I let it down, and decide to learn 2nd gear wheelies...
if I go lets say 60-65, sit back a little and let off the gas and get back on it would it pick up violently like the 1st gear? I mean , I know the concept and everything but my biggest problem is to keep the wheelie up without thinking about that I might flip her!
lakebum 06-20-2002, 10:17 PM Ive been trying to learn how to wheelie also. In fiirst, I just accelerate until 6500-7000 rpms, and then open it wide up. The front wheel comes up pretty easy. I dont clutch, bounce, or blip. All my friends are damn good at 2nd grear stand ups, and so far I suck. Ive never found the balance point, I guess im scared of looping my bike. There have only been 3 of the 7 guys I ride with loop this year. I like my $10k bike looking like a $10k bike. Maybe Ill invent a wheelie bar, and others that stick out the side so that I dont total my bike. I cant get the link above for the movie clip to load, as a matter of fact it shuts down my computer. If anyone has it, email me @lakebum12@yahoo.com Thanks
Dr. A 06-20-2002, 10:21 PM MAXXYM,
I can't remember who it was, but there was a post concerning 2nd gear wheelies here about 1-2 weeks ago. Same info here.
#1. If your about my size, 6 feet, 210 lbs, then listen to me; if not, don't.
The best way to avoid a violent take-off wheelie is to run at 40-50 mph, about 4-5k rpm's, pull the clutch in with your middle or index finger only (whichever one that allows you the most control) throttle it to about 7k rpm and dump the clutch (always be prepared to dump the throttle if its too much) and tune your skills from there. Oh, don't forget to lean back a little and hold on! To keep it afloat, you must train your yourself to lean back "a little, not a lot" instead of the second nature "lean on the tank" and hold it steady (throttle).
P.S. When you get down good, learn what mph/rpm combo you use so you can "wheelie at will." You want to be able to duplicate without "reinventing the wheel", if I may.
Keep it straight/good throttle control,

Your on. Where do you ride Saturday nights?
DyerR1 04-22-2007, 12:01 PM I used to have that same problem Max and Earl is right you're are going too fast or too slow. If you have stock gearing you should be at 60 mph at around 6,000 rpm and if you clutch it at that sweet spot she should come up. My problem was I was trying to clutch it in 2nd gear at 40mph so It always jumped forward but never came up. Now I wanna learn stand ups but they are scary. I don't know how to just do it and put away that fear.
jav1177 04-22-2007, 12:02 PM i cant do either yet but ive alwayz heard stand upos are easier and safer, i dont know how to clutch it up
