OK no really...there's no difference between the 02 and 03 R1s except that with 02 there was a Red/White/Black paint scheme and it was replaced in 03 with a Black w/flames scheme.

Probably a couple of other minor details but that's it.

There are a few details, mainly on the handlebars (starter with antislip-pattern e.g.), but you can't tell when it's riding.

:jump On the blue ones the white graphics are a little different. It is hard to tell unless you look at them side by side.

Yah just look at the tag on the side of the frame or run the vin:D

Well the most effective way is to look at the Vin number on the neck of the frame. A Vin # is 17 digits long; the 10th digit will be a 2 for an '02, and a 3 for an '03. Easy enough and you can't mistake that.

The easiest way to tell the difference is if you look at the black fairing where it says YZF (white) R1 (red) right underneath that in a kind of grey is a larger R1 that's on the 02 but not on my 03. Forum member Joey has the 02 liquid silver and I noticed that it wasn't on my 03 liquid silver. I am not sure about the other colored bikes.

On the blue bikes I noticed that on the 02 the front turn signals will be in the blue part of the fairing and on the 03 will be in the White part.

yep 03's were not as glossy as 02's. more of a satin finish

The 10th position of the VIN number tells the year. A "2" = 2002 a "3" = 2003 etc.

The '03 is faster...

Ya they get better colors, thats not fair.

03 Has driving lights that you can"t switch off and also 03 has hazzard lights

02's also have lamda ports on the header pipes for testing purposes. 03's do not.
