Wolf-R1 03-17-2004, 12:26 AM OK no really...there's no difference between the 02 and 03 R1s except that with 02 there was a Red/White/Black paint scheme and it was replaced in 03 with a Black w/flames scheme.
Probably a couple of other minor details but that's it.
R1 boy 03-17-2004, 01:01 AM There are a few details, mainly on the handlebars (starter with antislip-pattern e.g.), but you can't tell when it's riding.
:jump On the blue ones the white graphics are a little different. It is hard to tell unless you look at them side by side.
turboR1 03-17-2004, 05:51 AM Yah just look at the tag on the side of the frame or run the vin:D

:iamwithst my 02 graphics is different then the 03 graphics
here is a picture of my 02 so you can compare with the 03
DWAYNE 03-17-2004, 06:36 AM better picture
R1 Kid 03-17-2004, 06:59 AM Well the most effective way is to look at the Vin number on the neck of the frame. A Vin # is 17 digits long; the 10th digit will be a 2 for an '02, and a 3 for an '03. Easy enough and you can't mistake that.
Monolith 03-17-2004, 10:12 AM The easiest way to tell the difference is if you look at the black fairing where it says YZF (white) R1 (red) right underneath that in a kind of grey is a larger R1 that's on the 02 but not on my 03. Forum member Joey has the 02 liquid silver and I noticed that it wasn't on my 03 liquid silver. I am not sure about the other colored bikes.

On the blue bikes I noticed that on the 02 the front turn signals will be in the blue part of the fairing and on the 03 will be in the White part.
FIXTITS 03-23-2004, 11:41 AM 03 graphics :)

yep 03's were not as glossy as 02's. more of a satin finish
railr1 03-24-2004, 10:19 AM Easy to tell,

REDY2K1R1 03-24-2004, 11:46 AM U.K.03...This is my baby when she was only 20 mins old.......looks different now though, must dust off my digi camera and take some more.

Plantdawg 03-25-2004, 05:03 PM The 10th position of the VIN number tells the year. A "2" = 2002 a "3" = 2003 etc.
GreyR1 03-25-2004, 05:10 PM The '03 is faster...
Kenny S 03-28-2004, 09:23 AM Ya they get better colors, thats not fair.
R1 MUNKEY 03-28-2004, 09:46 AM 03 Has driving lights that you can"t switch off and also 03 has hazzard lights
KNEEDY R1 03-28-2004, 10:06 AM Stickers?
R1Budha 03-29-2004, 03:24 PM 02's also have lamda ports on the header pipes for testing purposes. 03's do not.
