I pulled mine for the winterization of my bike, it takes a little patience cause theres a lot of connectors and flaps that are very tight for people with bigger hands, I used the u joint socket that yammy gives you in the tool kit and a ratchet and extension when I needed it, just gotta have patience and be careful not to drop the plugs or smash the electrode, good luck bro!! Yeah, like everyone else said..to make it easy just remove the tank, then the airbox, then the plastic plate....i didn't remove the rubber baffle. All you need is a knuckle, a 5/8 craftsman spark plug socket with the rubber boot, and a small extension. You will only use the extension on 2 and three. 4 isn't bad...one sucks. This is where the knuckle helps out. Not bad..took me me and hour start to finish the first time i did it.

my 01 sure was a pain in the ass. No room to move your hands when you need to and if you don't have the perfect length extension for your ratchet ur screwed. I think I had to use a 3" and a 5" extension together to get them plugs out. Oh and use a spark plug socket with the plug holder in it or a magnetic picker upper thing, cause them plugs are like 6" deep in the head and you will never get them out after you loosen them. But that was on my 01 I have'nt done a 02 yet...

Hi, Know this is an old thread but could do with some advice: 1) NGK - are the Iridium spark plugs worth the extra spend? Is there a noticeable difference on throttle response as they claim? anyone tried them? 2) I'm doing my first spark plug change on a 2001 R1 - I've read the manual but I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice: - do I need to remove the fuel tank or can I just prop it up? Would prefer not to have to remove the hoses if possible. - what do i remove after the air filter? (I think there might be several things! please could you help by listing) - what are the big watch outs? Its my first go at this kind of maintenance so all advice appreciated. Cheers, Rob

By the way, everything The Woodman said is 100% correct... pain in the ass even though I had every tool except a rubber spark plug socket; I just had a regular socket.
