ok, my other thread was getting me nowhere so i looked into ohlins and the factory recommends an sd157 63mm but when i went to other sites looking for them different part number where listed for my bike. i have an 02 r1. so if anyone can help me out so i don't waste time getting the wrong part i'd appreciate it.

The SD157 (which has a 63mm shaft) is the correct Ohlins damper for the 02/03 R1.

thanks guys, if you would elaborate as to why they sell other ones for the r1 i.e. 90mm, 120mm, etc i would appreciate it.

They may fit the R1 (by frame bolting), but they are not specific to any particular bike. You might use a universal damper if you have a kit bike or a bike for which Ohlins has not made a specific damper, like the 900RR.
