: Scotts Dampener Question
RedR1pilot 01-05-2002, 10:22 PM Hey all! I am a newbie here and have a quick question about the Scotts dampener. First off, I thought I'd tell you something you might all find interesting....I sold my 2001 Gixxer 1000 to buy my 2000 R1! It seems like a much more balanced bike, and I think looks much better than the gixxer. Anyway.... I have a Scotts dampener on the bike, and just wondered if anyone adjusted the high speed adjustment (under the cap) or just left it alone....
Thanks
mach5er 01-05-2002, 10:32 PM welcome my son,
you have now reached full mandum. I can now respect you for who you are!

Eyespy 01-05-2002, 11:34 PM I have adjusted both the slow speed and high speed damping. And BTW, it's "damper". What do you mean by "under the cap"?
aarong 01-06-2002, 12:07 AM The Scotts comes with a cap over the screw for the high speed adjuster. The low-speed is the one with the knob on it on the left, and the high-speed adjuster is on the right.
I personally have never adjusted the high speed circuit, nor have I felt the need to. Scotts actually recommends that you leave the high-speed adjuster stock, but I'd imagine that in some cases adjustment of it may be required.

I have the Scotts also and have never adjusted the high speed circuit, which brings up this question.....has anyone adjusted the side to side (degree) adjustments?
Eyespy 01-06-2002, 10:52 AM Oh, I forgot about that black plastic cap. DOH! There, I just put it back on. I've increased the high speed damping about 1/4 turn from the factory ~2:00 position.
I prefer to keep the sweep adjustments at the factory (full sweep) setting.
Swedie 01-06-2002, 10:53 AM Does my Öhlin damper have this high-speed adjustment feature?

Of course I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that ONLY the Scotts damper has this feature.
aarong 01-07-2002, 03:14 PM Thats whats cool about the Scotts...
One circuit (the low speed circuit) controls the damping forces while you're just doing things like tooling around your garage or parking it or whatever. The high speed circuit is what will damp headshake. So you can keep the low speed circuit turned down somewhat and it wont affect steering and the high speed circuit will still do its job when the front-end gets light.

ChampionR1 01-07-2002, 11:26 PM Anyone know where You can get a good price on the net for the scotts damper ?
Twisted Logic 01-08-2002, 05:36 AM I got mine from www.kneedraggers.com the service is great and they will give you the best price possible.
ChampionR1 01-08-2002, 08:49 AM Thanks Twisted !!
Eyespy 01-08-2002, 06:56 PM Wherever you purchase it from, if you don't get it direct through Scotts, make certian you are getting the genuine Scotts mounting hardware. I have been told of cases of people being sold non-factory mounting hardware with some purchases of Scotts dampers. I have been told that Two Brothers is an example, but I cannot personally vouch for this. I have also heard stories of non-Scotts mounting hardware actually failing on the race track. Just in case there is any truth to these accounts, be sure you are actually getting the factory mount kits with the damper and not some after market mounts.
Twisted Logic 01-08-2002, 07:06 PM Eyespy is right,I also heard that. Kneedraggers actually drop ships from Scotts,so all is well
ChampionR1 01-08-2002, 11:28 PM Cool Thanks guys :yesnod
