Draggin 06-27-2002, 11:20 AM well, im finally gettin the 1st gear wheelie thing goin...I can just roll about 20-30, gas it, and get the front end up...NOW tho, when i get alittle height, and the power feels like it is kickin in alittle hard, the front end begins to rise, feels to fast, and i gently ease off so i dont slam the front end down..in fact, i have been trying to gas it alittle while coming down (thankx swedie) how long did it take you guys to learn to wheelie?...unfortunately, this is only my 2nd bike that i have tried it on, and yah dont really get second chances, so I have been takin it easy, learning at a slow pace..once i get comfy with pickin up the wheel, i now am startin to give alittle gas when shes up to keep her up...but im afraid to shoot for the balance point right now...(i had her up a pretty good ways alittle bit ago:thumbup ) oh, i have a question about 2nd gear wheelies...i tried poppin the clutch, or blipping it..(blipping is popping, right?) but i dont think im hittin it hard enough..any thoughts on this?...should i forget about 2nd gear and just practice the 1st gear till i can do it in my sleep?...just curious..thanks for all the help..i have read damn near every post here and I have picked up quite a bit...reading these posts keep me safer on the streets, because whenver I wonder if I should go for it, or slow down, MOSt of the time i take the latter route, since the cages are soo damn unpredictable...okay, well give me some advice, wheelie people!...OHHHH....when i wheelie 1st, i am hangin on tight to the bars....id assume this is normal...for 2nd gear, when you bl;ip the clutch, well, unless im doing it wrong, i dont have hold of the clutch hand....any takes on this?...if i try to two finger the clutch:lol :lol i will ride the clutch some and not totally disengage it...hmmmm well, let me know if i have been unclear about anything...thankssss!:thumbup :thumbup :thumbup
R1 #36 Silver 06-28-2002, 08:27 AM I don't like to wheele in 1st gear. It is to touchy. If i pick it up in firts i shift to second as soon as the rpm's pick up.
Your problem seems to be second gear sit down wheeles. If so you are most likely going to fast or to slow. Plus first, second, and third all pick up differentely!
Mine dose it best at about 60 mph. I make sure i am strait on the seat pull the clucth in with two fingers and give quick twist of the throttle while releasing the clutch.
Just be careful!
Maxxym 06-29-2002, 01:34 PM I am no expert on wheelies, but I just started to learn 2nd gear clutch up and in my opinion they are much much much better than on 1st gear...
Just start playing with the clutch while you are on 2nd gear and give it some gas... youw ill get it...
I was just messing around with the clutch and then I kind of knew what to expect in different stages...so finally yesterday I did it and it was soooo much better than 1st gear..
keep trying man..
summoner 06-30-2002, 08:39 PM I find that going slower helps alot in 2nd for me. I get going about 35-40, fistful of clutch, shitload of throttle, and stands right up (from sitting position), make sure before you pull up on it that you slide back as far in the seat as you can, then ride it out to about 110 or so :)
A little faster is sometimes easier (50-60) but generally if I want to ride out a good one picking it up at just under 40 works best.(mph) A sticky rear tire is a bonus;) I just recently discovered the 'g' spot and it feels scary as hell but there's no going back now.
toba r1 07-03-2002, 01:24 AM Second gear is alot easier to control than first gear. Personaly what I do is between 3500 and 4000 rpm I scoot my ass back a little bend my elbows and blipp the throttle and give her a yank. It will come up nice and easy and you can end up going a good distance with just some throttle control. You will have to get it up fairly high to carry any distance and the R1 or mine at least tends to go off line with very little input either left or right. I'm by no means an expert but I find that slipping the clutch is just a little to abrupt for me:no
Nice R1 07-03-2002, 03:13 AM 2nd gear is definetely easier than 1st. An easy way to do a wheelie in 2nd gear while sitting down is to sit as far forward as you can in the seat and roll the throttle on slow until about 5 grand, then gas it hard and give the handlebars a little yank while scooting back in the seat. It works pretty good for me. A friend has a video camera and we are going to do some taping this weekend and hopefully I can put it on the site. I also have a fail proof way for anyone to learn how to do stand-ups. I had my bike for a month at the time I learned how to clutch in 2nd gear and my buddy showed me how he does stand-ups and it's hella easy, it's even easier than clutching it. I was doing stand-ups one day after I learned how to do wheelies period. It has been four months since I bought my bike and I'm pulling 3rd gear stand-ups on the freeway, clutching in 2nd and riding it through to 6th. My friends say I'm a fast learner but I feel If I can learn, anyone can.

Limited R1 07-03-2002, 04:52 AM NIce R1 please tell us what your fail proof way for anyone to learn standups is. explain explain explain:yesnod
DriZay 07-03-2002, 12:36 PM Nice R1....you just have the nads! I'm working on getting brass balls---but I need to just keep saying to myself, "Self....I am not going to die" everytime the fropnt wheel points skyward.

Draggin 07-04-2002, 11:52 PM im still learning my 1st gear wheelies...I can wheelie at will now in 1st, so that is making me happy...i actually kept the front end up long enough that when it came down, the front tire sounded like when the tires hit the runway on an airplane:thumbup i thought i was tha shit for a few min....
still havent found the way to the 2nd gear wheelie..i can read all i want..i need to see examples...listen to the bike as someone does it so i can try n get a feel for it....
Maxxym 07-16-2002, 02:56 AM well.. after practicing for 2 weeks, I finally did it....
I held up the wheel in the air for about 4-5 seconds on the freeway. I wasn't high up there because I could still see in front of me but I carried her away heheh
2nd gear clutch ups rule baby!!!!!
oh yeah.. I also notcied that going 50-55mph while clutching up 2nd gear is lot easier than going 65-70 and trying to clutch up..
Keep practicing guys...its all in the experience...
I just hope my clutch can handle all this abuse...
DogBoneR1 07-16-2002, 05:46 PM I'm with Nice R1 and Toba R1. Clutch is not necessary for a second gear wheelie. :thumbup
dfastr1 07-16-2002, 06:06 PM I just hit the gas an bounce on the pegs an pull the handle bars. And kind of stood up.then sat down. That is how I got it up. One night solidus saw me the tailpipe was shooting out flames out I was proud of myself. Guys where coming up to me an talkin it was a fun night..
good luck an becareful.

yeah its not necessary if you want to go 55 on pop it up...I dont' think you can use throttle on and off technique on 2nd gear while sitting and going 35mph can you?
DogBoneR1 07-16-2002, 08:01 PM I dont really pay attention to the speed but I'll check just as soon as I get my bike out of the shop. Soon I hope!:cryin
dfastr1 07-17-2002, 01:47 PM you gotta go like 50-55 to do it in 2nd.
r1tadau 07-17-2002, 02:10 PM this is how I first learned how to wheelie (on an r1). I started by going around 15-20mph coasting with the throttle off, then I would give it a quick gas that would make the front come up. once I gave it gas to make the front come up i immeditley let off the gas. (partly cause i was chiken %#@) but right after i let off the gas i would try to catch the bike from falling back down by rolling on the throttle again. eventually i would get good at keeping it up, and soon after came something you would call a wheelie.. not saying this is the best way to learn, but it was how I did it. good luck:thumbup
toba r1 07-17-2002, 07:28 PM Been away for a bit, Hey Maxim I can bring it up in second gear sitting at about 4000 rpm with no problem on my bike that's in the 60 km/h to 65 km/h thats around 35 mph I think. The stand up bounce the pegs is even easier than that. I'm not a light guy either so that has very little effect I'm 5'11" and about 220 lbs. All I do is bend my elbows lean forward slid my ass back then roll the throttle forward, you'll feel the weight shift forward. Then punch the gas and at the same time shift your weight back ang give the bars a tug. You should now be looking at the sky :rock
Maxxym 07-18-2002, 12:38 AM well....another day of practicing.. I think I am riding them out a little better than last week.. I finally got over the fear or totally letting off the gas when she came up and I just let off nice and smoothly now, resulting in a longer whellie hehehe
I rule! watch out Swedie! hehehehe
nimmo 08-05-2002, 12:36 AM Can anyone do a 3rd gear wheelie around 65mph? I'm curious to know coz i've tried it and didn't work.
Is it possible? Maybe you have to go like 70-75mph. I like clutching 2nd gear but i don't really like to slow down to 50-55mph at 65mph on the interstate... I like to leave as much rpm's for the wheelies as i can. Anyways..just curious to know if anyone here do 3rd gear wheelies by clutching.
DogBoneR1 08-05-2002, 06:46 AM It's possible if you stand up and bounce it up. I never use the clutch to wheelie so I dont know how it would work using the clutch but I can power it up by just bouncing the front end. I'm not exactly sure how fast I'm going but I think it's faster then 60-65. 3rd gear actaually is a pretty fast wheelie. :)
Draggin 08-05-2002, 07:34 AM hey there guys....I have been practicing and practicing....
i have learned the art of clutching up a wheelie, now im working on bringing the front end up the same height consistently..im not using guages to tell me much, more concentrating on snapping the clutch hard enough and listening to the bike....
1st gear clutch ups come up real fast, i can power it up as well, but i like clutching up..you can be going much slower when you bring the front end up and ride it out a bit longer...
2nd gear...hehh...i weigh soo much i can clutch it up and really whack the crap out of the gas, and ride her out some....best for me is to clutch up around 55mph and bingo shes pretty high...my wife says that i am about up to her hip, so thats about 34inches off the ground...not too shabbyy....longest soo far has been a block...but by the time the front end came down i was going over 90......so that was only 5-7 seconds:D
...the balance point...the point of contention....:lol
it is not exactly one specific point during a wheelie, is it?....its more like ...how do yah say it...there is a *balance zone* in which if you keep the bike within the *zone* that you can keep the front end up without chasin the wheelie down the street?...i think i have felt the balance point a few times, but that lightness in the front end feels soo forgein i drop the front end down immediately....
slow but sure i am gettin the front higher and higher...it will get there before end of summer:rock
